25/06 or 308

A friend of mine is getting ready to either have a rifle barreled to 25/06 in varmint contour, but he`s having trouble finding an action. He can buy a .308 in varmint barrel contour in a Rem sps , either way he goes he`s going to put a good trigger and stock on the rifle. My question is,which of these two calibers would be the best bang for the buck, he`s wanting to try some deer at 600yds.
 
308,since I have one to sell...

Have your friend do some research on long range rifle competitions. The 1000 yard and under comps. He will quickly see which caliber is king.
 
308...While I've never shot a 25-06 my buddy has one and it's a great caliber based on what I've seen, but for the super long range stuff the 308 is the way to go. Whether or not it's a good idea to shoot at deer 600 yards away is a question every hunter must ask to him or herself...
 
I like the 308 to 600 yds. It is what I would call "effective" to about 800yds. After that, it drops like a brick.

For shooting to 1000yds. the 7-08 or 260 are easily better. Easily......

Anyways. My first choice would be the 7-08. I have a fondness for that caliber. They just plain work!

The 260 is great too, I just don't own one, YET!

308 is certainly "do-able" out to 6 or even 800 yds. But these others above do it easier and more efficiently.

25-06 is almost worthless, IMHO.

I have always skipped both of these calibers. Given a choice of the two I would always pick the .308.
Given my choice I would be picking between 7mm08 or .300wm.
 
I'm not running the 25-06 fan club here esp. since I've never shot one (Internet Gun Expert!)...I will say that out here in Northern California where a big blacktail buck will only weight 175 pounds and most run a lot closer to 100, that a lot of guys go with the 25-06.

It throws that 120 bullet that is great for side to side shots across draws and small canyons out to 300 or even 350 yards....I always thought of it as a 243 on steroids, but alas when it was time for me to abandon the trusty 243 of my youth, I skipped right over the 26-06 and went for the 7 mag....When you're 16 you're sure that by the time you are 21 you'll be hunting buggling elk every fall (so you might as well buy the rifle for it now)...Well I've yet to shoot an elk buggling or otherwise, but I've killed a lot of blacktails with the big 7....They're dead and eaten, but I think they would have been just as dead with either a 308 or a 243...or even that worthless old 25-06....lol
 
Why would he want to shoot a Deer at 600 yards? All my Deer have been from 30 to about 120 yards. I would be fine shooting one at 250 or so but if I saw one much further out I would just get closer....

162g(.625 BC or .650+ BC) out of a 7 mag will be chomping on 3100 fps out of a 26" barrel and 3250-3300 out of a 7 STW.

600 yards....jeez.......

Geez, I'm the only .25-06 fan here. Between all the the choices mentioned you can already guess what I'd choose.

Velocity, trajectory flat as a string and bullets to cover varmint to large deer it's the .25-06.

I've owned a Remington 700 VS in .25-06 since 1978. When it comes to varmint/deer hunting the 06 rules. There's a good reason this cartridge is popular in TX and other states where game is taken at long distances.

We're talking hunting not long range target competition. Personally, a deer at 600 yards is too far. I'm sure someone has shot one at that distance but it just doesn't seem practical to me.

Yep. I LOVE my 7 rem mag. An STW would be sweet!
 
I have shot a 25-06 for about 10yrs now and have never been disapointed with the results. I have shot mostly coyotes with it from 50-300yds and most of them have been DRT. I have also had the opportunity to shoot a few deer with it over deperdation permits, with very similar results. While I just recently have retired my 25-06 for a .243, but I will own another one as soon as I find the right one.

However for an overall performer and shooter I would probly have to go with the .308. Less recoil, more ammo options out there, both over the counter and hand rolled.

A lot of antelope hunters around here use them for there flat shooting at normal hunting distances. The problem with 25 caliber and long range is the lack of good bullets to get you out there. How many hundreds to thousands of rounds has your buddy practiced with at this distance in order to hit the field ready to make said shot? The elevation is the easy part to learn, its the windage that will eat most peoples lunch at extended hunting ranges. Moves the bullet from the boiler room to the azz in a hurry.
