Just bought one on layaway. What do you guys think of this rifle for big game. My friend has one and put a serious bitchslapping on a maine moose this year using a 180gr. ballistic tip nosler bullet.

Hunting partner of mine has a Vanguard with a synthetic stock chambered in 300 Weatherby. Pretty accurate rifle and really pushes a 180 grain bullet.

A vanguard in 300 wby mag is what I hunt with, killed 4 elk and quite a few bucks with it (ya I know its to much for deer but thats what I have) its a great round, but took several years before I could shoot it well. I hope you reload because ammo can be pretty pricey.

good hunting

Obviously a .300 Weatherby is a beast for elk/moose sized game. The real upside of this is you bought the Vanguard. Howa is probably the best kept secret in rifles IMO. I have one and plan on adding at least a couple more soon.

I am sure it is a good rifle and is plenty powerful enough for North America. As has been said ammunition is ridiculously expensive. I would have picked a different chambering if it were me.

Truthfuly if I had it to do over again I would have bought
A win mag instead, but i've always been a sucker for a good deal. Besides ammo price, IMO its an awsome round if you can
shoot it well.

my buddy reloads so i just gotta buy the bullets, powder and brass and he will do it for me :)

after sleeping on it. i am wondering just cause of ammo cost if a 300win mag would be a better choice. BUT with a 150 grain bullet your losing about 200fps. what do you guys think? 300win mag the ammo price is pretty close to an 30-06.

Nothing wrong with the ol' 30-06 or 308 Winchester. Either one of these will take game at distances most hunters don't even practice at.

I would go win mag, just based on ammo price.not 100%
sure but I believe the wsm and the win mag are pretty comparable ballisticly, with the wsm being a little bit
more efficiant. But the wsm is harder to reload for. and
I dont think the 200 fps dif between the win and wby is
going to make much difference unless your shooting at extremes.
Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in.

hope this helps

My preference would be for the win mag (probably because i own one), and i would agree that the 100-200fps difference between the weatherby and the winchester magnums will not really matter in the field if you are shooting at 300-400 yards or less. pick which ever one you want if you reload (or your buddy does for you). they'll all get the job done on pretty much anything in north america!

I use to have a Win Mag but went with the Weatherby because of smaller bullet selection. The neck is longer allowing this. My Win Mag was awesome but the Wthby is just as much fun. I use mine for coyotes so the big game hunting I know is covered if I ever go.

I would say 300 win as well. None of the animals shot with minesaid they wished i would have used a 300 Weatherby instead. LOL The 300 win and 300wsm are both good, but i still think the edge goes to the Win mag.

My buddy has a Vanguard in 300Wthrby. It shoots fantastic with a 180gr Barnes TSX at 3,175+.

With his Sako 300Win, we can only get to 2,950fps before pressure signs appear.

Get the .300 Weatherby. I have 2 in Remington 700 Classic model and they are deadly. It's a fantastic round that does it all since 1948.
