came across 4 boxes of 36gr barnes varmint grenade, i was thinking of developing a load for my 22-250. i have never used these bullets. any thoughts or suggestions?

If you don't have to shoot lead free varmint bullets I would keep using lead bullets. The BC on the lead free bullets are much lower than the lead bullets are.

I have to use lead free bullets. From what I have seen with the Barnes .224 50 Gr Varmint Grenades and the 6mm 62 Gr Varmint Grenades they are not as explosive as V-Max bullets are.

Varmint Grenade is a great name, but they are not great bullets.

I would much rather load a 50 Gr or 55 Gr lead bullet in a 22-250 than a 36 gr lead free bullet.

thanks for the info. i have never used a bullet that light, nor a non-lead bullet. maybe i should just trade them off.

I shot some prairie dogs with them a couple a three years ago, they all died.

. They were surprisingly accurate in both my 1:7 twist Colt 6920 carbine and in my Reminton 700 Tactical .223.

The way I look at it is, if you want to shoot 35 gr to 40 gr bullets you don't need a 22-250. 223s will shoot these light bullets at close to 4000 fps.

To get the most out of your 22-250 at longer ranges use a 50 gr or 55 gr lead bullet that has some energy when it gets where it is going.

i have a v-max load for my 223's that i have no reason to change. for my 22-250, i dont have a pet load right now, but years ago i had really good luck with 50gr, and some 55gr. these varmint grenade bullets were part of an estate sale, i have 400 to 500 of them. i usually shoot 55's in both calibers. with the case capacity of the 22-250 i would like a heavier bullet.

I took a coyote with black hills 36 gr VG from a .223. It was about 100 yards. tiny entrance, exit the size of a quarter. It died quick. Just look at the BC and the drop on that bullet, it sucks.Stick to lead if you can! I only used it cuz I was hunting the lead free zone here in commifornia.

Lots of sound wisdom here pilgrims. The 36 grain is a solid match for the .223, but not for the .22-250. Your normal off the rack .22-250 shoots best with 50 to 55 grain slugs. Then we come to twist rates.

The fact is that if you want to shoot tight groups you have to hand load and pick your parts very carefully.
