Excellent choices, as long as you stay away from the refurbished Zeiss.

Yep...no refurbished.

Zeiss are great, just no reason to go with a refurb. The one linked for such a "great deal" is refurbished.

Sorry I'm new to the whole optics realm. What's the downside to a refurbished optic? Or is it just that there are so much better options that there is no reason to do with it?

I don't know that there is a downside.
I would just rather have a new scope with a new warranty.
The refurbs might be just fine, but I don't have any personal experience with them.

I bought several of the Zeiss "demo" scopes a while back and they were all 100% like new in a box that had been opened.

Mostly the warranty. The refurb Zeiss only has limited 5 years on workmanship and materials. The new Leupold has a full, unconditional lifetime warranty.

I love the Leupold so far. The vx3 how far out can I see with that? Can someone explain how you can judge that by reading 3.5-10x40?

What is the max distance you will be practicing at and what size target?
What will be the max distance you will be hunting at? What animal(s)?

Honestly I want my scope to be able to reach an elk at 300 yards. I have a Nikon 3-9x40 right now and practicing at 200 yards I can barley see the target.

Are you talking about judging animals with the rifle scope?

Quality glass and a "no bull" warranty are two things that are more important than your power factor..Leupold, Sightron, or Vortex are the three that come immediately to mind that will serve you well..

My favorite mid range price optic is a Sightron 4-16x that I have no problem seeing a Prairie Dog at 400 yards...I use a 2.5-10x for Coyotes and seldom get off the 2.5x setting...A lot of big game has been harvested with a 4x optic..

Unless you are getting into precision, long range target shooting, your higher power optics, such as an 8-32x, will be more of a detriment than you normally anticipate...Heat mirage on a warm day will have you keeping it to 18x, or less...Been there, done that..

What kind of target are you using?

I have both and for my eyes the Meopro is better, especially in low light.

You don't think you can see an elk at 300 yards with a 9X scope? Really?

Scope POWER is way over rated for hunting. Sure small targets like PD's and GS and LR hunting can benefit from higher powers but from coyotes fox to elk 4x should be more than enough out to 300 yards or more, anything more is just a bonus. I really prefer a large FOV to X's. All but one of my hunting rifles carry 1-4, 1.5-6, I even have a couple of hunting rifles with straight 1.5x scopes on them. My one deviant rifle is a 22-250 with a 2.5-10 scope on it and I've never killed anything with it set higher than 2.5x

Shot on 4x with a 50 yr old gun 22 Savage High power

Another old gun with a old 4x can do respectable work at 300 yards.

Another old gun with factory ammo and a 1.5x scope at 100 yards.

If you can barely see the target on 9x something is wrong..
