.416 Rigby.....All I can say is WOW.

I went for a quick trip to the range this morning to try some pistol reloads. I was on the upper end of our club property at the pistol range, when I heard an unusually loud "BOOM" coming from the competition range. Of course.....I HAD to investigate. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

When I arrived, there was only one person there. I stopped to see what was making the sonic boom that I had heard. It seems that one of our long-time members (who I hadn't met before) was getting in a little practice with his Ruger in .416 Rigby. He took a little break, and I struck up a conversation about his "cannon". It seems that he is rather...ummmmm...."well-off" and makes a trip to Africa every year and felt the need to remain familiar with the rifle between trips. Not a bad idea if you're hunting dangerous game. I was in awe when he showed me the 400 grain bullets it was sending downrange. And THEN....he offered up an opportunity for ME to send a couple at the target. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Of course....being a manly-man....I couldn't refuse. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Let me say this: A .416 Rigby will actually take your toenails and turn them straight up in the air! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif I have NEVER imagined that much recoil out of a hunting rifle. It is hard to explain the massive push that comes from that cartridge and into your shoulder.

I can't wait for my son to get out of school this afternoon so I can show him my bruise. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

All I can say is you are more of a man than me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. I hate big guns I have never liked them and probably never will. The biggest gun I have shot was a 375 h&h and I will tell you that will be the one and only time that that will happen /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

If it kicks harder than a hot loaded 45-70 in a marlin guide gun then I do not want any part of it.I actually shot a coyote with one and I am not sure who was punished more. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's amazing, all the "USED" big bores you see in the gun stores are in such great shape. It must be the recoil factor. People buy them, shoot them, and get rid of them. It would be nice (and cheaper) if you could just rent one and buy 3 rounds.

I traded a rem 870 mag. express for about the same reason. I figured if it took a 3 1/2 magnum shell to kill a turkey, it probably wasn't fit to eat any way. Traded it even up for a 3 inch 870. Now I can hit most of what I aim at cause my eyes are open.

Steve,
Would you describe it as 'exhilarating'??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have the .416 Rem Mag. I was afraid of the gun at the start.

I shot a Ruger M77 in .416 some years back. It did not have a muzzle break. The recoil actually gave me a headache. I shot it once and

Years later a buddy decides that it is a good idea to go after Kodiak brown bear. He talks me into a custom .461 Rem Mag on a pre-64 Winchester action. He got the twin to it. This one has a muzzle break. The recoil has been substantially reduced and I have actually taken it elk hunting. With the muzzle break the recoil is about like a .338, however, that is the good news. The bad news is the prodigious noise. It is something to behold.

The .416 is a huge cartridge shooting 350 gr to 400 gr bullets. When I first saw the brown bear mount in the Kodiak airport, it did not look like a big enough gun. Anybody else ever see that mount?

Here's what my brother and his 458LOTT Ruger #1 with 500gr. solids does to a groundhog. And a video of one of my buddies shooting it,he wasn't prepared for it.

i posted awhile back about my experience with a .50 bmg. i fired it off a bench and even with a muzzle brake and weighing 35 lbs, it was still a rush! the only way i can describe it would be to say it's like getting punched in the head. it made my whole body tingle and i saw stars. would i do it again? in a second!

Hummmmm I think we'll classify that as fur UNFriendly. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

My Savage 10ML-II with 6gr RL-7, Harvester black crush rib sabots, and 300gr Barnes bullets kicks harder than my slug gun or the .340 Weatherby I used to have.
