A buddy of mine is lookin at these 2 uppers for a deer gun. He will be handloading to. Keep costs down. Im leaning towards the bushmaster. Any opinions.

The 450BM is this year legal in Indiana. If you go to the Indiana 2012 hunting guide it names it specifically. There is a .450 bushmaster forum website that I found the other day. But I do not know anything about the .458

Its also easier and certain you will get jail time with a 6.8.

The maximum rifle cartridge length is extended to 1.8 inches, making the .460 Smith & Wesson, .450 Bushmaster, and .50 Beowulf legal to use during the deer firearms season.

Here is the reason.

Rifles with cartridges that fire a bullet of .357-inch diameter or larger; have a minimum case length of 1.16 inches; and have a maximum case length of 1.8 inches are legal to use only during the deer firearms and special antlerless seasons. Some cartridges legal for deer hunting include the .357 Magnum, .38-.40 Winchester, .41 Magnum, .41 Special, .44 Magnum, .44 Special, .44-.40 Winchester, .45 Colt, .454 Casull, .458 SOCOM, .475 Linebaugh, .480 Ruger, .50 Action Express, .500 S&W, .460 Smith & Wesson, .450 Bushmaster, and .50 Beowulf.

Only reason I need to justify a .458 Socom over a .450 Bushmaster...

Pistol bullets vs rifle bullets. Penetration and terminal performance of the Bushmaster just can't touch the Socom on performance.
