I bought a new barrel and now I'm stumped on what to make it. Bartlien, 6mm,7.5 twist,lt. bull sporter, .710 muzzle dia. So.....243, 6BR, 6CM ?? Any suggestions? Needs to be .308 bolt face caliber.

6x47 lapua, throat for 87g V max, as throat gets some wear, go to a 105g bullet...perfect set up. You could just go with 105's, thoated a tad shorter than normal to give longer barrel life. Monitor brass for doughnuts. A friend in Mn did this and he is getting fantastic accuracy with shorter than normal freebore which translates to about 1000 more rounds of barrel life.

Depending on barrel length, the velocity will be 2900-3050. R#17 will give accuracy on the top end of the scale with accuracy.

Will feed without any issues.

The 6 CM will be an easy no headache cartridge. You know it will feed, and you don't have to load it hot. I have a 6 XC so that is the longer range rifle for me over my 6BR.

My 6BR is a lot of fun and just [beeep] easy to get a accurate load.

It will probably be used for coyote and deer and some bench shooting. Going on a Remington 700 and yes I reload. I've been down the fire forming and neck turning road and don't want to/not going to, mess with that with this barrel. Thoughts of just a plain jane 243 are still in my thoughts as well.

I used to be hard core for 243 until I saw the light. Constantly chasing loads and the lands is not fun. I burnt out 3 243 barrels in one year shooting matches and critters which wasn’t bad except chasing loads.

If it’s going to be high volume you can’t beat 6BR but if you want tit to feed then you want a bottom metal that accepts AICS pattern mags and you want AI brand mags with HRD follower and spacer kits.

6 Creed works well as does 6x47 Lapua. 6 Creed has a ton of factory brass now so no worry about that. 6x47L has no factory brass but it’s a simple neck down form 6.5x47 which pushes the donut inside so no problems or need to turn. I don’t mess with anything you have to form brass for or any complicated brass prep either, too many good options these days to deal with that.

It won't be a high volume rifle. I have to many rifles for that. LOL I'm planning on using factory BDL bottom metal also. I figure if I go 6BR, I'll probably use a single shot follower and the CM will feed from factory metal without any trouble. I'm a few pay days away from getting things put together so there's no great big hurry. I have two different smiths and I want to talk with them first too. I really like the BR but the Creedmoor sure makes thing easier. I'm a big fan of easy!

If it’s going to be used for coyotes and deer you want it to feed reliably. I haven’t experienced a 6BR in a 700 with factory mag box to feed reliable. I’d go 6 creed or 6x47.

I know your right about feeding issues with the BR. The Creed has lots of brass available, will feed through the mag and a buddy has a brand new reamer I can use to. Kinda looks like the 6 CM is the best way to go.

Can't argue with any of that. Just make sure the freebore of his reamer is appropriate for whatever bullet you want to run.

If it's a SAAMI spec reamer it will pretty much work for anything but the absolute lightest bullets due to the length of the neck and how much you can seat them out or in and still keep the base of the bearing surface above the neck/shoulder junction. Something tells me that if you got a 7.5 twist barrel your interests aren't with the light bullets.

Broomstick, Load development:

39.0
39.5 g of H4350, Rem 71/2 primer, 105g Berger Hunting Vld, .003 off the lands

Your load development is done, bug holes will abound.

tweek seating depth for smaller bug holes

Pretty sure I'm going 6CM. Brass is available locally, no fire forming or neck turning, plenty of bullet choices, just load and shoot. Easy peezy, just the way I like it.

Everyone needs at least one 6 BR.

I have a Rem 700 that LDI rebarreled for me with a 1-8 Brux. It feeds with The Mike Bryant mag coversion so far. Just an altered BDL setup.

However, the 6 CM would definitely be easy and very capable. And will likely be better for deer. In this case, 6 CM gets my vote, then build a 6 BR next.

If I didn't already have the 6XC reamer and rifles, I would go 6 CM. BTW, I have a 1-8 Bartlien on a 6 XC.

And if you ever just don’t feel like loading but want to shoot you have the option of factory ammo which never hurts. Also if you’re in a pinch Cabelas seems to alway have 3 of the Hornady flavors (Varmint, Precision Hunter, and Match) on the shelf. I’ve got a case of Federal Gold Medal sitting here just in case I don’t feel like loading.
