Hey guys needing some input on this gun!! What is the recoil semilar to and what is the best twist for this caliber!! I am really wanting to get this caliber. If you have any info on this caliber please share.

Good deer gun, lots of folks that compete in the metal target game like it because of the low recoil. It's a 308 case necked down to 7mm/284 diameter. I shoot a 280 Remington which is very simular though in a long action.

This makes a great cartridge in a lightweight gun.

The recoil is very close to a .270 I find. They are a good all around round to use. I know a few guys that use it from everything from Coyotes to Elk. One of the guides I know loves it.

I bought one in a Model 7 Remington about 5 years ago and love it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif. I have a friend that is so recoil shy he would flinch with a 30-30. He shot mine and had to have one. He doesn't mind shooting the 7-08 1 bit. The down side is, with ammo prices on the rise, it's too easy to keep shooting that mild recoiling 7mm before you realize you've dumped $30 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif. I guess that is a good problem though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif.

I have a Savage 116FSS ( stainless with blind magazene) . The 7-08 is a very versital gun . The recoil is mild compared to say a 30-06 but it actually seems less than a 30-30 to me . This could be because of the design of the guns . It is a reloaders delite . Bullets from 120gr to 150gr shoot well in mine . I shoot Speer 130grain boattails for deer and 120gr Horniday Spire points for yotes . Yes I use mine for yotes because it is one of my favorite guns to carry . I don't save fur I just go for max hole ! Get a Savage or Rem . and you will be happy .

I have a Rem 700 that had the barrel cut off to 21" before I bought it and recrowned. Very very nice handling gun. It has become my favorite deer rifle. You won't lose enough velocity to worry about, go with a 22" barrel. I am not sure what I would compare the recoil to, but it is very mild and very enjoyable to shoot. Get one!

I bought a used one and put a Boyd's JRS stock on it and re-worked the trigger. I really enjoy shooting this gun and plan on starting my reloading venture with the 7MM-08.

Yotedog , the standard barrel for a 7-08 is 22" .I think going to a longer barrel is not going to get you much velocity wise . It also will be too long for comfortable carry . If your buying a gun for long range shooting buy a long action mag . If you want a handy "hike through the woods deer/yote gun get a short action 7-08 with an 18.5 to 22" barrel .I am a Savage man but those Rem. Model 7 CDL's make my heart pound.

Do it!
ARCOREY has got the formula down pat for a great deer rifle!

I sent out my Model 7 to be tricked out and rebarreled to 7-08 for project "ultimate deer rifle".
It was a great gun (.308, 20"bbl) in it's own right but I've got this disease about doing things to rifles that there seems to be no cure for. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Reloading equipment only makes it worse! Recently resized 100 Lapua .308 cases down to 7-08 to feed it...

The gun will now sport a 21" Broughton #3, 12 twist for shooting 120gr TSX almost exclusively. The beauty of the Model 7 is in it's compact design. 21" is plenty long enough ballistically & it will be quite handy in the woods.

If you want to shoot heavier bullets (140-160gr), you may opt to go for a 10 twist. I recommend finding a good 'smith & taking his advice into consideration for your build.

Keep doing your homework & have fun!!!

My 280 Remington Mountain Rifle has a 22 inch tube and I can't tell much difference between it and the 243's I shoot. I also shoot a Rem model 7 308 carbine with an 18.5 inch barrel and even it's not bad. I think the Rem model 7's now come with a 20 inch tube for the shortest barrels and that makes a fast handling little rifle. I know that the carbine I have is just excellent in the woods and still shoot inch hundred yard groups with a fixed four power Leupold on it.

I think that the recoil of a 7/08 is at least twice that of a 243, and is very difficult to distinguish between a 270 and a 7/08.

For guys that are used to shooting big magnums, the 7/08 has MILD recoil. To a guy that is used to shooting 223's, 22/250's, and 243's, the 7/08 Kicks hard.

I would much prefer a 24" barrel on the 7-08. If you read 'Pet Loads' they recomend a 24" barrel. If you get one with the longer barrel, you can always cut it off if it feels too long. capt david

That's what I keep hearing, too. I already shoot a .270 and would like something with significantly less recoil.

I have to agree, I have a Rem 700 .308 it is great for deer but when shooting from the bench or on the silhouette range, after about 20 - 40 rounds I'm ready for a break.Blue Dot loads and lighter bullets are one answer. But..

I'm looking at going to .260 in a med.contour 22in. barrel as I don't think 7/08 is enough of a change. This will be used for calling, deer and target shooting .

I had a 280 Rem in an Encore 24" semi heavy barrel. I'd gladly shoot 2 boxes through my tiny short barreled 7-08 before I'd shoot 3 shots through the Encore I use to have. Notice I use to have it. I had both rifles on the bench at the same time, let me tell ya not even close. I've shot 243's, 30-06's, 270's, 308's, I'd say it is like a light 308 or stout 243, It doesn't feel like any long action caliber that I've ever shot. Just my experiences for what they're worth /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif.

I own 2 7mm-08's, and they are nowheres near my 280 in recoil. A 7mm-08 is about the same as the 7x57Mauser. You can shoot the lighter bullets all day long from the bench(120's-130's)but when you get into the 160-175gr bullets you will notice the difference.
That's one of the reasons I like the cartridge so much is because of the flexibility it gives me when reloading for different types of game.
A 22" barrel has fine accuracy/velocity as well.

Good luck and aim small

aim - Recoil is even less than the 7X57 Mauser. I agree with you, I lke the cartridge too!

The 7mm-08 is a great caliber.

Recoil...

http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm

8.8 recoil energy for the .243
12.6 recoil energy for the 7mm-08
16.5 for the .270

So, the 7mm-08 DOES NOT recoil like the .270

It recoils slightly more than a .30-30 which recoils at a recoil energy number of 10.6

Remington has also come out with a Managed Recoil round for the 7mm-08.

DO NOT hesitate to get this caliber. You will love it.

go ahead and get the 7-08 and never look back I have thousands of rounds through mine silhoutte shooting and hunting some times as many as 300 rounds per day and recoil IS not a problem.just enjoy it
