What is your set up for this? i know its not everyones favorite round but what have you all found to work the best, ive been using IMR 3031 for a while.... any suggestions as to a better powder, primer, projectile? i havent had much experience with this round so far and have most the most part just been buying the "economically sound" reloading components for it. any advice is appreciated /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Welcome to the board! IMR 3031 is a bit fast for most applications in the 7mm Rem Mag. What weight bullet are you using?
John

I had luck with IMR 4831. 64 grains behind a 150 grain barnes triple shock with a 3.3(col)it shot a .7 group at 100 yards out of ruger77mark2 but I haven't pulled the trigger on a deer yet...Jason

RE-22 or retumbo are the cats meow in a couple a 7mm mags that I reload for.
Deer medicine is the 140grn Sierra and for Elk/ mixed bag hunts, the 160grn Speer grandslam usually gets the nod here.

4831, RE22, 7028, Retumbo. Basically any slow burning powder designed for big cases. Look in several reloading manuals and see what is recommended. Lee's lists loads by velocity.

They start out their top loads for the 140 grain with ACC Mag Pro, H870 and H1000. For the 175 grain bullet they start IMR7828 then Reloader 22 and Reloader 25 then move down to ACC Mag Pro, IMR 4831 and H870.

71 grains of RL-22 with a 140 Noz BT, Hot load , but works great. One shot drop load. Shoulder shot on deer drops them in their tracks. Ground hogs ,well can you say boom-splat.
Cats, it does a nasty job on them. For anything small, its not a pretty picture.

Just remember all guns are different and each will like its own load. My brother has a BDL , it does ok with the load, but his likes a little less powder.

My Remington KS really likes the load. I have printed 5/8" groups at 200 with it.

I have varmint load for the 7mm mag. 100gr Hornady HP #2800 with IMR 4831 @64.4g. The max col is 3.098". In my gun its a .26" jump. It grouped .75" for 5 at 100yd. This rifle has never shot anything under 1" off the bench. I usually load for .010" off the lands.
Jim

I load 63.0 Imr 4831 under a 160gr. partition or accubond. Both shoot moa, and the 15 or so deer that I've shot never knew what hit them. I have shot one coyote, and it pretty much emptied him out.

Not to divert the thread but
My son and I were laughing the other day because a friend of his didn't think his own 7mmMag would shoot past 100 yards.
How he came up with that logic is unknown to us, but I understand he didn't fire at a nice buck that was out about 150yds becauae he didn't think his gun would shoot that far.

Here are my loads for my 7 Mags that are all 700's:

Rem brass in all loads

120g Nosler Ballistic tip or Barnes tripple shock, Speer 115g HP
71-72g of R#22
CCI-250 primer
3550-3600
extreme accuracy

140g Barnes Tripple shock
65.0g of IMR 4350
9 1/2 primer
3250 fps
Seat bullet .035-.050 off the lands

Same load with 140g Nosler Ballistic tip or Accubond except seat the bullet to touch the lands

154g Hornady Sp or SST, 150g Sierra BT Sp, 150g Nosler Ballistic tip
63.0g of IMR 4350
9 1/2 primer
Seat bullets to just touch the lands

The 154g Hornady Sp is a great elk and large hog bullet.

162g Hornady SP(elk and large hog bullet) or SST
65.0g of R#22
CCI250 primer
2900 fps

160g Sierra BTSP Seated to touch lands
61g of IMR 4831
9 1/2
2950 fps

160g Sierra BTSP seated to touch lands
61.0g of IMR 4350(close to a max load, work up to this load)
9 1/2
3050 fps

I have killed deer with all these loads. The 120g Tripple shock really makes a mess of a deer, blows up both front quarters.

The 150g Sierra BTSP, and the Sierra 160g Spbt are hands down winners on dropping deer in their tracks with these loads. I know between my brothers and father, we have killed 100+ deer with the 160g Sierra BTSP, they don't like to run with this bullet, nor the 150g Sierra BTSP. I have had deer run off with the 140g Sierra BTSP when shot out of the 7 Mag at 3250 fps, and I think that this bullet is much better suited for 7/08 velocities.

I shot 3 bucks under one persimmon tree a couple of years ago, with the range varying from 300-330 yards with amazing success with the 154g Hornady SST. Two of the bucks dropped in their tracks, while one jumped up what looked like 12 feet straight up in the air and fell over backwards.

There has been many bull elk killed with the 154g Hornady Sp load listed above, and to several guides surprise, the same load shot straight through both shoulders on large Texas hogs.

The Barnes 140g Tripple shocks are extremely accurate, and do a great job on deer. I just don't know how I feel about having to shoot a bullet that will enable you to shoot a deer up the A$$ and still kill it. One thing for sure, the Barnes Tripple shocks copper foul less than the Nosler Ballistic tips in my Stainless 700's.

The load with the 115g Speer HP does not mess up coyotes at all with only a quarter size exit hole.

For coyotes:
120g Sierra Sp
59.0g of IMR 4350
9 1/2 primer
3000 fps
is what I shot coyotes, turtles, and jack rabbits with in one Remington 7 Mag with light recoil and great accuracy.

I really like the 7 Mag caliber.

You don't want to use FMJ bullets on animals. They do a poor job of killing. You will spend a lot of time tracking for long distances. Also, they ricochet forever.

Jack

Never use a FMJ bullet for killing animals!

IMR 4831 is all I have ever used in my Mag's and they shoot really well. Hornady 139 gr bullets or 154's kill very well and are plenty accurate. Have shot speed goats to mule deer with them. The 154 recoils pretty good.

Your Statement is quite the contrary. The 7mm Remington magnum is in the top 5 for big game rifles. It is so popular in fact that every large rifle manufacturer chambers their rifle for this caliber. In fact most every custom shop that offers magnum calibers offers this cartridge in their lineup. I shoot Muleys with 140 grain Barnes Triple shock. Pushing that is 66.5 grains of IMR 4831(Caution this load is above maximum. All Loads should always be custom tailored to each gun, starting with the minimum to mid load and working up.) with a CCI 250 Large Rifle Magnum Primer. This round is estimated to be traveling at 3257FPS. I have shot two Deer with this load. Results were the same on both. Complete penetration on a broad side shot placed in the pocket. the exit hole on the far side of the ribcage was X Shaped and roughly the size of a silver dollar exit hole through the hide. This leads me to believe that the bullet opened as advertised and performed as promised. Both deer died within 5 feet. I was impressed as I have seen double lung shot deer run up to 200 yds. only down side to the Barnes triple shock is the price tag. However in relation to the price of their competitors premium bullets. They are on par. ie. Partitions, Scirocco, A-Frames Etc. Good luck, I would stay with your slower burning powders like the 4831, reloader 22, Retumbo, Magnum and so forth. The 7mm is one of the greats. So Enjoy yours
