a few .17 Rem questions.

Are Chan's bullets flat base or BT?

What weight bullets does he make and wonder if there's a good fox-friendly one in the mix?

Ive heard nothing but good things about chans bullets. Having said that Ive never tried them. I bought 400 berger targets when I bought my 17 and as I was getting low berger discontinued the J4 jacket and chan discontinued making them. Then got in on a group buy for more match targets and bought several barrel lifes worth of them...then chan started making bullets again. Thinking of buying some to try.

Ive shot 25 gr bergers, 27 gr woodchuck golds and 25 gr hornadays. The bergers performed the best on fur. Id take the hornadays over the 27 gr golds simply because I had less exits with them. The golds were the most accurate bullet Ive shot in my gun though. Word was that Chans bullets were comparable to bergers 25gr targets.

I find both the flat base and boattails a pain to seat since they are so tiny. I cant say I would prefer one over the other based on loading ease.

I had a little run of bad luck with the group buy bergers. Im still not sure if it was me or the bullets. I added a little more speed to them and they seem to be working same as befor now. But only have a sample size of 3 to compare them with.

I haven't laughed like that in a long time. And when I reread it, it still makes me laugh. I'll have that image in my head for a long time.

Thank you.

Chan's bullets are flat base. Very accurate bullets, more so than my Bergers and Genco's, but about the same as BlackHole bullets. As for performance, Chan's have no equal. The other bullets are good, even great, but Nagel's are just so consistent.

I'm the opposite of Tim, I prefer flat base bullets. I find them easier to develop accurate loads for. I chamfer all of my case mouths and use a Forster Benchrest Seater die. I haven't had any problems with that combination yet.

In spite of my typo, I'm still wondering what hand loaded bullet the OP said he has tried that are not very accurate in his obviously early production 1-1", whoops.... 1-10" twist rifle.....

Is it the rifle or the bullet being used?

I tried and tried to get the Woodchuck den 25gr gold's to work in my remington, but they just wouldnt. They had an MOA of barn door! The Hornady 25gr hp's and the Berger 25's worked great. I chalked it up as my rifle just doesnt like them, so no point in wasting components trying to.

Tugboater,
Kindler makes a 25 grain flat base slug that has shot real well for me, but I haven't used em on fur. I gave another member some try as well, and he said they shot great. Might want to give those a try sometime.

Thank you sir, ill look into it. Ill probably stick with the Horady 25 hp's becouse i have a pile of them, and they are murder on coyote's.

Chan makes three different meplats for varied expantion.
I was told yesterday that I simply parrot what I've read on the internet regarding 17's so I won't say which one works for Fox but give him a call and see what he recommends.

Phutch,,, the reason Chan was able to start up again is because after allot of trials, tribulations, and expense he now has dies that allow him to make his own jackets instead of having to rely on Berger for them.

The quality and consistency of Chan's bullets due to the fact that each one is hand made makes it a no brainer.
Course I'm biased because not only is he a personal friend but he just sent me two boxes of 20grainers for Christmas.

I'm done giving comparisons on this web site.
I'll send ya a PM in the morning regarding his 20's.

ok thats a lot of info to digest thank you! is there anyone willing to do a little reloading for me? i'll pay shipping and materials. looking for a good all around bullet for coyotes and i'm only shooting in the 100-150 yard range as i hunt hard woods where i deer hunt. i guess i am just not happy with the Rem factory loads.

If the Rem. factory loads aren't shooting well for you, chances are that reloads won't either. I would clean the snot out of that barrel making sure there is no carbon ring in the chamber. Then free float the barrel and bed the action. Lighten the trigger and then try the factory loads again.
Irregardless of what some may say, those Rem. 25gr. sp. bullets were and still are sought after. I have a life time supply of 17 bullets, otherwise I would buy them from you.

I got in a probably the same group buy. I haven't shot any of those yet. I sold most of my 17's but still have a 17-223 AR15 and decided to have a 17-204 built. I loved the 30gr Nagel bullets in the 17-204, they shot better than the 30 golds in it for me.

I use the 25gr Hornady HP's in my AR, and work fine on coyotes. Berger 25gr Match and 24.0 grs of Varget has been my starting load for almost all my 17 Rems.

Hang in there Charlie, after the last couple of weeks coyote hunting, I feel like a total New-Bee to the sport. Don't know why I had so much bad luck calling, but it was, let's say, "discouraging". But my dog sure had a great time.
