ALL PLEASE READ SUNDAY HUNTING (VIRGINIA)

Last week I was watching Whitetail Revolution on OLN when I got a little mad /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif after viewing their Overheard segment. The subject was about hunting on Sunday.
They spoke with two guys, Ron Spomer ( a widely published writer and photographer, is a rifles columnist for Sporting Classics magazine, a technical writer at Rifle magazine, and a field editor at American Hunter magazine ) and Michael Hanback (is a columnist and contributing editor for several popular outdoor publications, including American Hunter, Outdoor Life, and Whitetail Hunting Strategies ).
Ron was in support of hunting on Sunday and appalled that many of the states in the east do not allow Sunday hunting.
Michael Hanback was against hunting on Sunday and for those of you that did not see the segment I am going to quote him /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif . He said “ You know I grew up in Virginia born and raised there and I’ve never hunted on Sunday in my home state, never had it, it’s part of our tradition. We don’t want other people form other states or other organizations coming in and trying to tell how to change our laws to allow people to hunt on Sunday. I like keeping our law in place where we don’t have hunting because we do give the land owners a brake and we do give the deer a brake, and that’s over all good for the image of hunting. It’s part of our tradition keep those no hunting laws in place in Virginia and other states and I’m in the majority on that with non hunters and hunters alike”
Now just because I can not finish without telling you all my opinion of Mr. Hanback. First, I feel that in his position he should be trying to promote our sport. Not faning the flames for all the anti hunters giving them more ammunition. They all ready spend more time protesting our sport then most of us do doing it. The C.A.S.H. (Committee to Abolish Sport Hunting) http://all-creatures.org/cash/alerts.html people keep the no Sunday hunting bill on their agenda at all times for all states. This has nothing with Sunday being the Lords day the anti hunters say they should have one day a week when they can walk in the woods and feel safe without the fear of being shot (because we all know that happens all the time) they already have nine months what more do they want maybe they should go to church during hunting season.
Mr. Hanback words his second sentence as if he has hunted in other states on Sunday that’s kind of hypocritical don’t you think. What’s this tradition thing he speaks of putting up a Christmas Tree is a tradition no hunting on Sunday is a law and I still cant figure out who he speaks of when he says we, it must be that mouse in his pocket. He disgusts me and he’s a black eye on hunting and the closest thing to a dirt sandwich I can think of. I will not buy any of the products he promotes and I will not watch his shows.
Now I believe in the Lord and I realize Sunday is the Sabbath but my point is this. Some of us have to work six days a week this does not leave much time to hunt in an already short hunting season. Everyone else can enjoy their sport on Sunday (Nascar, Football, Basket Ball, Baseball, Sking, Fishing ) whatever it maybe, so why cant we. Can anyone explain that to me?
Here are some links to write in Virginia please take the time to write and anyone out of our state feel free to help or give me some ideas.

If you are in a no Sunday hunting state take the time to find the links for your state and write them.
I have always felt like my one letter would not matter but having a group of hunters such as yourselves behind me maybe we can all start chipping away at our state Legislators and get these ridiculous laws removed, so we can all enjoy a very family oriented sport on what’s for some of us our only day off. Thank You All For Your Time Chris,

And I was feeling sorry for not being able to hunt at night!!!

I never realized there were places that didn't allow hunting on a Sunday. That just pure-d sucks.

I've never considered hunting to be breaking the Sabbath. Hunting is when I'm closest to God.

I've always wondered, if the state is going to stop hunting on Sunday for the baptist, methodist, catholics, etc..., then what about the seven day adventist that attend on Saturday, or the ones that attend on Wednesday night or the next group of whateverists that decide Tuesdays and Thurdsays work for them. At what point does religeon stop hunting rights. I hunt religeously, and believe it should be practiced 7 days a week. My church is full of critters, trees, rocks, and rivers. My religeous idols are shotguns and rifles. My cloak is camo(and just for all those about to start bashing me in the name of religeon, no I'm not an Athiest or wierdo, just an avid hunter in VA).If you want to walk in the woods on Sunday, goto the Blue Ridge Parkway where hunting is prohibited and wildlife is preserved, that's what the hunters do when they don't want to screw up another hunter by picnicing and hiking with the family. That's what it was set aside for. I have never liked being told that out of the short two days a week I don't have to be at work from daylight to dark, I can only hunt for about 12 hours of one of them. I appreciate the links VaPredHunter, I will be sure to give them a piece of my mind and encourage all that want to hold on to their rights or expand them to do the same. I'm not saying hunting on Sunday is right for everyone, those who don't agree can go to church while I'm out hunting in mine. I should atleast have a choice though.

just remember when giving a piece of your mind... do it in a polite logical way.. dont sink to there level of finger pointing..and name calling... my 2cents

ok so lets see if I have this right...
On Sunday in VA you can't hunt

but you can

watch Nascar (no body ever gets harmed in that sport....right)

buy beer/alcohol and drink

watch football (a field of 22 millionaires acting like pansies trying to beat the crap out of each other)

you can shoot your gun ....as long as its not actually at something alive

Ok I get it now.............

Sunday only laws or Blue Laws have been on the books for a very long time and reach much further than hunting. I just did a Google search and came up with a ton of information on these laws, to much really. Try a search on Blue Laws and you will be amazed at the things that are restricted in various areas on Sunday. But the general trend is to remove the Sunday restrictions.

04GRIZZ, I was quite calm when arguing my point, or should I say pleading my point. What really got to me was the generic server generated reply letter that fits most situations that was sent back. I must be one of those dumb hunters that doesn't know any better /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif!!

As for the Blue Laws it is still illegal to possess a concealed weopon on your body that exceeds 4' in length. It boggles the mind how this law was ever necessary /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif.

Michael heres a funny for you in the county I live in dancing on sunday is illegal you can go out and drink beer just don't tap your foot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

NMLeon,

Looks like you and I agree once again. I too feel closest to God while hunting and have spent untold hours over the years in prayer and thanksgiving while in the woods.

Blue laws in Missouri:
(1) Against the law to drink "buttermilk" on Sunday.
(2) Against the law to beat your wife, on "Sunday."

About as much sense as No hunting on Sunday, huh?

Excuse me, the wife needs a beatin' and it's only Friday, so I'm good to go!

Thanks for the link joined their forum maybe we can get this changed. Tired sitting at home on Sunday, my sport is hunting and we should all be able to enjoy our sport just like every one else enjoys their's. Chris,

i know what you mean... all those replys mean to me.. we look like we are listening to our citizens, but we really dont care until election time...

VA,
Thanks for the pm.
I used to work with Mike Hanback's uncle when I worked out of Warrenton. The whole family is kinda quirky!(I'm being kind here)
Getting hunting on Sunday passed has always been a major goal of mine. I approached V. Earl Dickenson almost 25 years ago about introducing a bill into the legislature to repeal the Sunday hunting ban. Dickenson's nephew and I were duck hunting buddies, but that carried no weight. His reply to me was that if he introduced such a bill, he'd be lynched, then tarred and feathered!

I'm hoping that times have changed, but I fear that they have not changed enough. We're not only fighting the old blue law mentality, but the likes of Falwell and Robertson. Every year someone attempts to bring a vote on a bill to allow Sunday hunting, and it never makes it out of committee because Falwell et all send a delegation to the legislature to oppose it...they've got the money, and money is what does the most talking in Richmond! It seems that they're worried that if we're out hunting on Sunday, that we won't be contributing to the collection plate! Just look what happened in WVA. The state passed it, then the Farm Bureau got [beeep] off because they weren't consulted and collaborated with the churches to get the ban replaced on a county by county referendum. Hence, most of the eastern counties lost Sunday hunting again.

DGIF's official stance is that there is no valid management reason to disallow Sunday hunting and that the commission would not oppose it.
Rational arguments for Sunday hunting will only go so far. We have to prove it to be an economic benefit, which it would, for it to get traction. Virginia's hunting license sales have dropped by over 34,000 in the last three years, probably for a myriad of reasons, many too long to address here, but part of it will be that folks have more demands on their time due to work and family and with the rise in license costs this year, I'll bet a lot of folks will stop hunting rather than pay the increased fees to go afield for one or two days a year! An additional day(Sunday) would add to the appeal, and the economy in increased sales of gasoline, food, lodging, firearms and ammo, clothing, and all the other related gear associated with hunting. Mostly it would benefit the more rural communities where lots of folks are struggling economically already.
VA, have you and Pruson and your group thought of taking up this issue in any organized fashion? If so, I'd like to throw my voice into the fray!
F1
VANimrod, you out there, weigh on in, or have you given up on us after moving to NC? Maybe you're mind is on the impending nuptuals....congrats!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Of course not being able to hunt on sunday does not bother him... all he does is hunt. The rest of us only have Saturday and Sunday.

We can hunt on Sundays here, it is amazingly stupid for states to prohibit you from enjoying the outdoors on your off time. What if your only day off was Sunday does this mean you just have to tough it because you have responsabilities to take care of?

Here are some dumb laws from my state

"It is illegal for the owner of a bar to allow anyone inside to pretend to have sex with a buffalo."
What?????????? and Ouch

"It is illegal to wear your boots to bed."
I go to sleep at deer camp all the time w/ my boots on

"It is illegal to have sex before your married."
I guess I am a felon, does it matter that I married her 11 years ago and kept her?

"It is illegal to have the hind legs of farm animals in your boots.
I'm afraid to ask but, RoosterFeather why would you do this?

Rus

Sonny you're in VA not MO.LOL
In VA you can fish,Trap and hunt on shooting perserves on Sunday.I don't know why we can't hunt on Sundays? Maybe all the clubs in VA need to get their land lic. as a shooting perserve.
