and lets not forfget dear old Sarah Palin

But the claim was made that Arkansas was small potatoes compared to Alaska. Nothing metioned about Vermont. Was curious how that could be.

But you bring up a good topic. How does Alaska's state budget have anything to do with the private oil companies? The state of Alaska isnt drilling, pretty sure companies such as BP, Marathon, ExxonMobil, and Unocal are the ones drilling.

But dont trust me.

Alaska's 2008 budget $11,400.5 (Millions)

Arkansas 2008 budget $22,259.7 (Millions)

I believe the comparison was between her and Bill (can't keep it in his pants) Clinton... And since he served Arky in the 90's then a current budget doesn't mean diddly. How bout you keep up TJ.

But the conclusion was made that Alaska has such a diverse budget over Arkansas due to it being an energy state. So I relayed the two current budgets.

But I guess I could go back and adjust for inflation and compare the two even though Palin wasnt even Gov in 1992 and do all the math and wizardry but......I wont.

So who's keeping up and who's falling back?

TJ, I question your numbers there--can you link to where you got them? I had different AK numbers which I did link. Perhaps mine are wrong, I dunno, but I'm curious where you got yours.

If it makes it easier, look at AR vs AK GSP's (ie state GDP's).

"Arkansas ranks No. 48 in new U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates of states' per capita real gross domestic product." http://www.katv.com/news/stories/0608/525945.html

"Its per-capita GSP for 2006 was $43,748, fifth in the nation."

No, of course the state government does not drill for oil and gas, but it does oversee those private firms that do. The state also has to work closely with these firms to provide needed infrastructure improvements which make it possible for these companies to do their work. Palin has also spearheaded the construction of a very important new pipeline that will have tremendous significance--as much as the pipeline from the North Slope/Prudhoe Bay did when it was completed in the early 1970's. Obama has never had anything to do with a complex project like that nor has he ever worked with nuts and bolts industry like oil and gas, fishing, or anything else.

The people of Alaska are rugged individualists, the type who made this country great and they have made her "...the most popular governor in America, with an approval rating in the 90s, and probably the most popular public official in any state". http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/013/851orcjq.asp

Personally, I trust the opinion of Alaskans far, far more than those of he South Side of Chicago human debris which elected Obama. She appeals to the producers and he appeals to the sponges of other people's labor and risk.

Java,
Thanks for covering for me in my absence. I didn't have time to get back on yesterday evening. Too many irons in teh fire with kids homework, getting ready to take my son hunting this weekend, etc.

Alright, lets just say that being governor of ANY state makes you qualified to be president. Now that arguement is completely over.

What I think we are all missing here is the fact that not a single one of us would want to be governor of event the easiest state to handle. Yet, too many are quick to jump on someone saying their job is too easy, does't count, etc. when in reality most of us don't know jack squat about it.

Comparing population, land size, and budget is probably a good start, but doesn't give you the whole picture. I know good and well Mr. Clinton didn't take down anyone in the Dem party for being out of line. If anything he was aligning himself with the most crooked and used Arkansas as a stepping stone. Raised our taxes, raided our trailer parks, and headed to Washington D.C. I can't think of a single thing he did that was good for Arkansas in the long run besides leave.

I came back to edit and add that Arkansas has increased its energy production greatly in the past 3 to 5 years. Billions of dollars are being made here on natural gas exploration and drilling. Even in the bad economy the state has managed to have budget surpluses directly related to the natural gas influence. What have the politicians done with it? Not much but waste it as far as I can tell. Oh yeah, they did raise the severance tax on natural gas so they could get even more tax money out of the companies doing all the work. But it was for "education." This state [beeep] away money like its never ending. I promoting changing our state motto from 'Land of Opportunity' to "Land of Endless Tax Opportunity' since we have one of the lowest per capita incomes but one of the hightest tax burdens.
