Annual Groundhog tally for 2011

I have been trying to hit them as hard as I can with the terriers. The first time out was a no go. There was one home but could not do any digging due to a concrete floor, and the dogs were a little bit to big to fit. I have been having good luck with sheds and such though.

Forgot, up to 5 so far.

Good job Rowdy. Nice shooting. What is that gun and cal?

OK, I'm finally on the board this year. Been out 3 times prior with nothing to show for it. Today was much better - let's call it a "Fireball" of a day!

I went out this afternoon and decided to give the 17 Fireball some work. Nothing was stirring at the first few fields I went by but there found lots of action at the final farm. I confirmed 4 'hogs but lost a 5th when it got it's second wind. I hit it and tumbled it down a 10 foot hill where it thrashing in some tall weeds. I was looking for a followup shot when it ran back up and into the hole.

In no particular order...

192 yards (after missing at 300)

100 yards

The one above was perched atop one of these logs like he was a king surveying his kingdom. I watched it fall off after I hit it - looked dead as a stone.

190 yards. It was digging a den in a mound where the farmer buries his dead cows. That's a ribbone next to it.

100 yards or so. He was watching me with just his head sticking out. I didn't need any more than that.

The 17 Fireball did real well and it was a super day outside. I hope some of you got on a few today too!

Good shooting guys. That Fireball looks like it did the trick Wahoo. I wish it would quit raining here long enough to get the fields knocked down so I can see to shoot. If the hay gets much taller, this may go hand to hand with a knife and pistol while crawling through these jungle fields

Funny you say that. A prior trip had me stalking a barn surrounded by tall grass. I heard a rustling and could see the grass moving as something came directly towards me. I literally lifted my foot, then lowered it on top of the 'hog as it tried to walk by me. It got nasty with me real quick! I let it go as it wasn't very sporting to do anything with it right then. Hopefully we'll meet again with about 300 yards separating us.

You're lucky he didn't turn those shoes into open toe sandals Wahoo. They tend to get pretty mean when you pin one down or corner it. Did he give you a nice whistle while you had him pinned?

Shoots much better than it's owner is capable of. Loves Hornady 40gr. vmax but throws the 55gr. all over the place. At some point I'm gonna have to settle down and work up a load for it with a heavier bullet, but it's hard to argue with 5/8" at 100 yards.

Corey, roger that on the hay, grass and other crops getting so tall with all this rain.

We finally got a break in the rain today and I was able to get out for a few hours. Went to a new farm I had never seen before. They were cutting the alphalfa to day, so I wasn't sure what I would see. #1 was at 85 yards. 2, 3 and 4 were at 115 yds. I got confused and thought I was in a dog town for a minute. Sure was nice to get out and shoot the new .204.
The load I used today was the 39 gr BKs pushed by H4895.

This one is when I got confused and thought I was out in Wyoming for a minute.

Saw three today. Shot twice and missed at 398yds. I messed up the dope on both and dialed wrong. Third shot was on a second hog at 325yds. Looked like a gut shot. He was sitting on a rock over the hole and tumbled back in. #3 came at a distance of about 12' with the Ruger MKII. He popped his head up and I managed to get him. Both victims declined a photo opportunity

I'll try to get video up of the 325yd hit soon, the bullet trace is pretty cool

Finally got past the PA turkey fiasco where ground hog hunting was unintentially shut down. So far the count is up to 14 ground hogs.

8 with the CZ527 .22 Hornet shooting Midway DogTown 34g HP.
4 With the CZ527 American .223 shooting 40g NBT.
2 With the Savage 93R17FV (.17HMR).

This is looking like a good year so far. I need to get a scope on my .22-250 LRPV and sight it in with the 75g Hornady BTHP bullets for longer range shots. This is the first year I've been seeing them out beyond 250 yards. My .223 is setup for point blank range hunting.

Took a little personal time today and visited some old places and some new places. Scored a little additional land and took most the hogs off them. Decided to let the Hornet cool off today and instead took the 17 Fireball. Connected on all 6 shots out to 156 yards. I really like the punch this Fireball puts on them - DRT.

Nice guys! I'm having a very slow year, what with the crazy weather (hay fields finally just got mowed), and crazy work schedule. But I did get my second of the year last weekend. . .head shot with the .204, about 110 yards, took half her head off

I really need to stop forgetting the camera. . .
