Annual Groundhog tally for 2011

That'll be a nice shot wahoowad. I'd get my elevation dope for that distance and chance the wind. Maybe a few 2 liter bottles of water for practice with the 243 on a non-hunting Sunday. At that distance, a lot of factors come into play, it'll be an accomplishment for sure. Way to keep after them. This is my most pathetic season ever. I'm having a hard time getting into it right now. I'm really missing my 243 and day dreaming of an upcoming hunt of a lifetime in New Mexico

. At the rate I'm going, double digits may not happen. I'm being told the 243 is a couple weeks out as well as my western hunt. I see one maybe two more hog hunts in my summer before the deer get my attention.

Thanks, Corey, I want to try a few practice shots. Water bottles sound perfect.

I went to a new farm this evening thinking it would cool off from the 95 degree heat. It did not

although neither did it deter the groundhogs! I went 6 for 6 with my 17 Fireball with the 3 longest being 220, 230 and 250 yards.

Thanks for the great pictures and stories, guys!
We've been hunting some, but not taking many pictures, so I haven't been posting much.
BRB and I braved the 95 degree heat today, but we saw very few poodles. Most of the beans are so high you can't even see deer bodies while they're standing in a bean field! Nothing but heads and ears sticking up

My # 41 fell to the 204 at a measly 95 yds:

BRB also connected with his 204 at a little under 200 yds:

We moved closer to town to one of our old hotspots, but very few piggies showed them selves. This one was the exception, but was in a place I couldn't use a "real" rifle. The shot was a lasered 56 yds. with the pellet rifle, # 42:

We gave the pellet rifles a workout earlier on a different farm, shooting pigeons off the tops of the silos out past 60 yards. We wrecked the day for close to twenty pigeons, so that made up for some lack of groundhogs.

Flyrod1,

Thanks for the post.

Ur certainly correct about the crops being high and getting in the way. There's a 100 acre alfalfa field going to be harvested (second cutting but it's all of 18 inches tall) soon about half a mile from my house. I'm hoping to get some opportunities then. Beans are tall here too.

What is the make/model of the pellet rifle?

Fitch

Fitch,
The pellet rifle is an Air Arms 410 SL(erb)in .22 caliber. It shoots dime size, and smaller, five shot groups @50 yds. with the JSB Exact 15.9 grain pellet at around 960 fps. It's amazing what these PCP air rifles are capable of!

I looked it up. Oh my! That's definitely not your Grandfather's pellet gun! It shoots about like a subsonic .22.

Thanks

. Just kidding!! I have actually taken 3 with the 22 magnum (Ruger 77/22M) and 1 with my Marauder .25 cal air rifle.

I miss shooting the Ruger 77/22M as it is one sweet carry rifle. Weight and balance just right. Its just that I've been focusing on more long range shooting so have had to leave the little magnum at home. I take it if I will be near barns or on smaller properties. What about you? Been getting out?

Getting out? Not much! Its so hot and dry down here havent had any good rain in months. Yesterday I saw two trees fighting over a dog. We did get out Saturday morning checking on the tree stands putting out minerals for this falls bow season but you have to get back in the house by 10:eek:o get under the AC or youll burn up! Its was 110 air temp the other day!

This morning was fun.

Usual morning stuff (horses fed, stalls cleaned, breakfast, etc.) was done by 0730. Temp cool, at least for a couple of hours, bright sun with little drops of dew on the grass, not much wind - felt like a great morning to see if there were any ground hogs with an appitite for tender young alfalfa garnished with glistening diamonds of dew on it. So with the CZ .223, chair, and sticks in the back of the Jeep, I drove to Tims, got there about 0800 and took a look.

Well, whaddya know, walking in to the field up toward the top of the ridge behind his house with the binocs to my eyes I see one down in the bottom of the valley that runs diagonally across the field, I could barely see him over the top of the rise. He's busy eating and not still for long at all.

I do a quick check and it's both a good shooting angle and I'm pretty sure he hasn't seen me. (Those critters have good eyes.) Took a range finder reading - 224 yards. Too far for standing off sticks with my skill set so I bent over out of sight, set up the chair, extended the sticks to just longer than I thought I'd need them, bent my knees and sort of crouch walked till I could just see him over the top of the ridge. Sat in chair, and sure enough, I could just see 'em, my shot would clear the top of the alfalfa on the ridge by maybe a foot.

Got rifle on sticks, set the AO to 200 yards, magnification to 14X, took another range finder reading and it said 204 yards. The range finder automatically corrects for the pitch angle and gives me the horizontal distance which is what I need to know. There is a barely detectable breeze in my face. 200 yards is where the rifle is zeroed - that works just fine. Got the cross hairs on'em, squeezed, and #31 was VF (Vulture Food). Checked watch, it said 0810, about 10 minutes into the hunt! That tied the total for my best year ever, which was 31 in 2009.

Works for me.

I sat right there for a few minutes enjoying the plesant fragrance of morning evaporating off the field, gentle breeze in my face, but couldn't see the big rock ridge off to my left, and I've shot 3 of them on or near it (renewable ground hogs?), so I stood up to glass it and by golly there was one sunning himself on top of one of the rocks. I slung the rifle over my shoulder, stood up just enough to get an RF reading, 184 yards, and them carefully moved to my right a few yards till I could see him while sitting in the chair.

Shot angle is good, barely detectable 90 degree cross wind is no problem, leave the AO and magnification where they are - get the cross hairs on him, squeeze and he's dead.

Watched him roll off the rock, down the bank, come to a stop in plain view, and my second contribution to a sumptious Vulture feast was a done deal. Looked at my watch, it was 0830, and realized I had a new personal best - 32 in one year. I didn't jump up and down and cheer (bad form, besides it scares the ground hogs), but I was pretty happy.

No pictures because I didn't want to walk ~600 yards round trip through the wet alfalfa to take them.

I spent another hour but didn't see any more, the breeze was building and it was starting to get warm, so I packed up and headed home.

That makes 13 out of that newly seeded alfalfa field this year. I wouldn't be surprised if I get a couple more there before the season is over. It's the best field on that farm to hunt given the current crop situation.

All in all, a fun morning outing.

#33 is Vulture food.

He came out of the pasture on the right. I had to wait till he got almost to the dead weed covered rock break in the alfalfa field before I took my shot. He was a mess, but I can show the field ...

Number33for2011-A-RS.jpg

There is a house about 800 yards behind the ridge where I first spotted him. You can see it's roof top in the background on the right. I had to wait till he was not in line with the house before taking the shot. The ground hog took the red arrow path across the field - he was moving right along. I barely had time to swing the setup and get ready to take the shot. It was 184 yards, almost the same shot as the other day.

Dropped him right in his shadow. Didn't see any more in the next half hour, then the farmer came out and started spraying, so we chatted for a few minutes, then I packed up and left.

That's the 14th out of this field.

There is a lot of beautiful outdoor scenery in our hunting photographs that we do not get to enjoy because of the small image sized forced by this website. It is a shame, 800x600 is pretty standard everywhere else but here.

We finally got a little rain yesterday afternoon but it stopped by the time I got off work
thumbup.gif
. It cooled things down from the 95 degree heat although the humidity was so thick you could cut it with a knife

.

I shot 6 on this farm a few days ago and knew there was another field I hadn't even checked out - so that was the plan. I knew it was going to be a good evening as I saw several groundhogs in fields I passed by on my way to this field. Sure enough they were out although it required lots of low crawling to get shots from the crest of a hill. Furthest was 270...all taken with the 17 Fireball. It was overcast, gray and hazy but the Mueller APT scope really pulls them in clear and crisp. I remain very satisfied with this scope.

I shot at 4, hit these 3. I was a bit disappointed in my shooting - the temps/humidity/crawling/adrenaline helped me to miss several shots at them tonight. May have been off on my range a little bit as it was hard to get a good reading with the rangefinder shooting at the adjacent bare hillside. Anyway, evening ended well and I left a few for next time. Sadly this farm is being sold soon and I suspect my permission will not continue.

Looks and sounds like you're having fun. That top one is a hog for sure! Nice story, nice pics. Keep it up!

Why'd you pick the Mueller? Just curious. Cost? What else do you like about it? Thanks.

At the time it fit the price range I was looking to spend and was recommended by many as the best bang for the buck. It has lived up to it's reputation and been a great scope. Clear glass, held zero, I've used the target turrets for moa adjustments out to 270 yards. Granted, that is not a lot of clicking for a flat shooting 17 Fireball, but it's getting the job done and I have no reason to spend more to replace it. It cost me $160 or so from JoeBobOutfitters (site sponsor).

I finally got to get out again this evening after work. Went to a small farm that is close by just to get out. I was at the lake all last weekend so I didn't get a chance to get out. I setup close to where I took my first one of the year. After 1/2 hour this guy pops out. I had to shoot off my sticks so it took me a minute to settle in. Popped him in the nugget.

144 yds with the .204 The pic was where he rested.

He came out from along the ditch that runs through the property. Gun pose

IMAG0441-1-1.jpg

He is probably the largest of this year. My shoe is size 11. I think it is time to go to another property I got most of mine from last year. I haven't even set foot on it this year.
