Annual Groundhog tally for 2011

Wahoowad,

Well done! I definitely like the trailer setup.

I need to get some of those Accutip bullets and give them a try. I'm not having much luck finding a load that will shoot the 20g V-Max accurately in my .17 Remington (Rem 700 BDL). I bought it to shoot 20g frangible bullets in the rocky pastures we have here in south central PA. You are doing really well with that bullet taking them down at 300+ yards.

What scope are you using?

Thanks

Finally made out to the Hog farm today. This is the place where I shot all those big Ghogs last year. I haven't been back since January. It was foggy and overcast this morning, so I wasn't sure what I was in for. It is only 50 acres and doesn't offer long shots. Saw 5 and only got shots at 2. 3 saw me before I could get setup for a shot. At least I know there are some for my next visit.
My first shot was 103 yds on a little guy. 1st small one I have shot on this property.

Shot view; He was just right of center.

It was a head shot. Gun pose.

IMAG0011-1-1.jpg

My 2nd one was the 4th one I saw and the second round on the farm after a light rain today.

107 yds and a big boy from a hole I was not aware of like the first kill. Sorry no shot view. Another head shot, but he was on all 4. This guy didn't run off, but he had his surrender flag up for a bit.

OVerhead view. Both were taken with the .204, 32gr vmax pushed by w748. I shot the same load in my .204 bolt gun and they were all over the place. I am not sure what is going on.

I am close to done for year, but I will still shoot one with my bow if I see one. Hope everyone is well. Great pics and write ups guys.

Since I built my 20br I haven't really used any of my other varmint rifles and this 204 is a tackdriver I had forgotten just how much I like this rifle.

It was a great night overcast and cool with no wind and they had just cut the alfalfa fields, we only hunted one field saw 6 but only took 3 hogs.
I went with my brother who likes chuck hunting as much as I do but since he works out of town for weeks at a time he doesn't get to go very much so when he does I try to let him do most of the shooting. Like last night I took the first one then he got the rest can you guess which one was mine.

We set up in the corner of the field under some pine trees where we could see most of the field and started glassing it wasn't long before we saw a hog about 350 yards out, I ranged it with mt Ziess range finder and dialed up my scope and in the first five minutes we had one dead hog.
Then saw a hog way across the field and while getting ready to shoot it one popped up right in the middle of the field so I told my brother to shoot it
so he shot and it disappeared so we went back to the furthest hog it was still out and standing at 450yards so I shot and missed it was still out so when my brother was ready to shoot I look out in the field and there was another hog where he shot his first one so I told him to shoot it, he shoots the hog disappears and the other one is still standing so by know I get the 20 br out and dial up the yardedge shoot and the hog rolls up in a ball waving his tail I was pretty sure he was dead so I put down the gun and pickup the glasses just in time to see him crawl off into the weeds.
By now another hog pops up in the farthest corner of the field about 550 yards we took two shots at it and missed both times we had to be close he was hopping around all stiff legged with his tail straight up in the air and did'nt look to happy that we interupted his dinner and after the second shot he finnaly ran back to his hole, we waited about 1/2 hour no more showed so we went to check out the damage the first one was laying right where I shot him and the furthest one was just a big blood trail into the weeds
we went to the hole in the middle of the field and there were to dead hogs laying about 3 feet apart both head shots all in all it was a good night except for the runner.

Great posts Selem and Rich! Just the fix I needed.

Rich.- how do you feel about that 20x power on those 400+ yard shots? Would more power help?

Salemdog and Rich44,

Great posts! I'm reloading now for the post crop season coming up. The farmers should be harvesting the corn and beans here soon. I can't wait...

Wahoo
I like all the power I can get I can always dial down, if you can't see them you can't hit them. The 6.5-20 is the small scope in my varmint battery I also use some 8.5-25's and 8-32's right now I'm trying out a 10-50x60 Sightron on a 6-284

I was supposed to be on vacation at the beach but this hurricane ran me off early.

So the next best thing was a day out hunting groundhogs
thumbup.gif
. I decided to revisit a few places that didn't seem to have any groundhogs the last couple times I checked them out. I loaded up my cooler with cold drinks, picked up a couple sammiches from the corner store and headed to the country.

I stopped at a couple of these places but they still seem pretty barren despite farmer assurances that 'they are out there.' I saw one or two, popped another at close range in a barn with the 22 magnum. But it was uneventful time, just a lot of walking in the heat and humidity with nothing to show for it. There is still a lot of tall beans and corn on many fields so opportunities were limited.

I saved the largest place for the late afternoon. As I pull up I see several fields had been recently cut
grin.gif
and I've been waiting all summer to see what this side of the farm looks like. On a side note I called the farmer to check in and let him know I was going to be on his property. Turns out I was close to 'ground zero' for those east coast earthquakes you may have heard about and he was preparing to pull down 2 chimneys that were damaged

. I'm pretty sure this farmhouse is where his daddy grew up too.

While walking in I couldn't help but notice this albino deer. I don't see a lot of this so it was pretty neat. It was brilliant white and very noticeable although probably 600+ yards away so even my zoom couldn't get a sharp picture.

P1000294.jpg

I saw movement inside this stand of trees so laid down and gave it a little time see what would happen. The albino deer kept me entertained but it wasn't too long later that groundhog #1 came out from that hole in the base of the tree. He must have seen me earlier as stopped partway out and laid down to survey his kingdom. But at only 180 yards I had his head lined up nice and clear in my crosshairs. I let loose with a 20 grain Accutip from the 17 Fireball, both seeing and hearing it make contact. He wiggled a bit, then flopped over and was still.

While inspecting 'hog #1 I kept noticing large hornets flying around me. Turns out I had walked right past a hole in a tree with an active hive inside! Yikes - good thing I didn't get them riled up! Several stopped to check me out but I stayed calm and we got along OK. That grove of trees was a great vantage point for some adjacent fields but I decided not to fire my loud rifle right next to that hive! I moved on...

P1000300.JPG

While scanning with my binos I noticed this fella had already spotted me and was checking me out. He watched me sit down, range him and get set up for my shot. The terrain was kind hilly so I had to prop my bipod legs on top of the toes of my boots to get a straight shot. It was pretty shaky doing this but I found my shot, took it, then he went to sleep and probably never knew what happened.

P1000298.JPG

I walked on, scouting these new fields and trying to avoid fresh piles of cow poop. Out of the corner of my eye I see something move and it was a groundhog actively digging at his hole. He was so preoccupied he either didn't see me or didn't care. While I got set up he went back inside, but then reappeared pushing a fresh load of dirt out. It was about 200 yards and I was given a clean shot at the top of the head. This is the pic I can post.
P1000301.JPG

The whole afternoon I had been scanning about 1000 yards of nice treeline that ran along the edge of 2 fields. Finally, late in the day, I saw movement as a groundhog emerged and looked about. I was in a pretty good position so he didn't see me and I was able to lay down and get a solid prone shot readied. I ranged him at 250 yards right before he entered an area of taller weeds. I could more or less follow him in the scope by either seeing him through the weeds or following the moving weedtops. After awhile it started to look like he wasn't going to come out and I contemplated pushing my shot through a weed or two. I am always hesitant to do this for 2 reasons: I really like a clear sight picture of what I am shooting at, even if I am feeling pretty confident watching my target move around. Second is I worry the weeds could deflect my light 20 grain bullet and I miss. So...while mulling all this over he resolved the situation by standing up and exposing what I needed. A loud thwaack confirmed the hit even though I couldn't see it following the shot. This was the blondest 'hog I've ever seen - sorry it isn't showing up in the pictures.

All in a all a real nice half day out, going 4 for 4 with the 17 Fireball and getting a 5th with the 22 Magnum. The only other memorable event was I split the crotch of my hunting pants wide open jumping across a creek. These were my favorite pants

! But no hunting today with the hurricane coming through. Good luck to all who are in its path!

Nice hunt story and good shooting I need to get my 17FB back out in the feild. BTW very nice pics what camera are you using.

WTG! You're smacking them hard son!! Good story, great pics!

I'm finding my hunting requires a lot more sitting and waiting rather than walk and stalk. They seem to holding until comfortable and coming out at different times of the day, all day long. Not so much the early morning, late afternoon and early evening like before.

Thanks guys.

Rich - this is a new camera and I'm still learning to use it. It is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8. I bought it primarily for the 16x optical zoom with the thought I would take more action photos of hogs before I bust em. But I usually get too excited and forget the before shot... All of our pictures would look so much better if this website didn't shrink them even more. You lose a lot of sharpness and detail when this happens. I don't know of another forum that shrinks pictures so much.

It was wise to be careful around the European hornets! They can really mess up your day! I've seen some nests exposed by loggers in very cold weather that were 10-12 feet tall in hollow tree trunks. Thank God it was below freezing! They can get very aggressive if you pizz them off!

Autumn is in the air.....days are getting shorter and ghogs are preparing to head south.

Good luck to those in the final month or so!

Yea we are starting to focus on deer and dogs but we just got 2 new farms to hunt both haven't been hunted in a couple of years the day my brother stopped at one of them they were cutting hay and two coyotes were out in the field looking for mice while they were cutting, one was a nice sized black yote.
The other farm just put a dead cow on their manure pile and had four dogs on it. we got these while scouting

New to the forum and kinda new to varmit hunting. Been away for 10 years.

Went to a new farm yesterday so I was not sure what to expect. After gearing up I walked down a lane that had pasture fields on all sides. As I got close to the field directly in front, I noticed what appeared to be a stump in the middle of the field. One look through the binos and realized it was a ghog standing on his mound having a look see. Ranged him at about 180 yds.Got into position and let one fly. Saw him roll and heard the "thump". Number one down.

Sat there for an hour and Steve the land owner came up on his four wheeler to see who I was. After talking for a few he told me where he has been seeing most of them. I packed up and started back down the lane. As I was walking I looked to my left and saw something in the middle of the pasture to my left. Threw the binos up and noticed it was a hog standing on his hind legs. This one was about 275 yards. Had to put the barrel through the fence to get a good shot. Squeezed one off and saw him double up. I decided not to carry my gun while walking to confirm my kill. Big mistake. After walking about 100 yards, I saw another one by a rock break feeding about 200 yards away. I ran back and grabbed the rifle, got set up and dispatched him. Number two and three down.

After that I decided to hunt a field on the other side of the lane.Walked up to the top of a knoll and set up. Wasn't there more than 15 minutes when I saw one feeding about 150 yards away. I watched him for about five minutes when something told me to look to his left. When I did I see another one about 30 feet from him. He did not look happy. He then took off after the first one and attacked. They started rolling around and I thought I might get my first double. They finally broke up and the first one ran to the right away from his hole. I took aim on the second one and squeezed. Heard the thump and knew he was down. The first one was not sure what the noise was so he froze. Gave me time to reload and take aim. Number four and five down.

While I was watching these two go at it I noticed another one to the right of me sunning himself on his mound. When he heard the shots, he ran down his hole. Figured he would return and he did after 10 minutes. Ranged him about 225 yards and let one rip. Rolled him right down his hole. Number six down.

It was getting late so I decided to call it a day and head back to the truck. I stopped to glass a rock/tree break and saw one feeding in some tall grass. Ranged him about 250 yards. Got set up, took aim and touched one off. Heard the impact and saw him fold. Number seven down.

Not too bad of a day. Seven shots, seven dead ghogs. Next time I will take my camera. I took pics with my phone but can't upload to computer.

PS. Love reading these stories.

Dave

Thanks for the welcome guys. Yeah I got lucky finding that farm. Steve's dad owns a farm that I also have the privilege to hunt. So far I've gotten twenty ghogs out of one field there. There is at least thirty more.

When I decided to get back into hunting this year, I wanted to shoot something different.( I've had three 22-250's ) I did some research and ended up getting a Savage model 12 LRPV in 204 Ruger. This thing is "NASTY". Other than the gun weighing almost 17 lbs., I couldn't be happier with it. I also have a RRA ATH on order. I will post pics of both slayers when the RRA comes in.

Good huntin

Dave
