Another Ackley Improved thread

If you are thinking of a 243AI, just get a 6mm Remington. The 6mm will do anything the 243 will do +200fps. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

not quite true....

Most guys build the 243 AI with a faster twist... shoot the longer pills...

Comparative Ballistics (Drop from 100yd Zero, Drift in 10 mph Crosswind)
Cartridge Bullet Vel FPS 300yd Drop/Drift 600yd Drop/Drift 1000yd Drop/Drift
.243 AI 115 DTAC 3200 8.32" | 4.08" 57.15" | 17.57" 218.6" | 54.8"
.243 Win 115 DTAC 3120 8.97" | 4.24" 60.82" | 18.25" 232.3" | 57.0"
6XC 115 DTAC 3040 9.67" | 4.41" 64.82" | 19.01" 247.2" | 59.5"
6mm Dasher 105 Berger VLD 3030 9.92" | 4.85" 67.33" | 21.24" 262.7" | 67.4"
6mm BR 105 Berger VLD 2920 10.91" | 5.08" 73.33" | 22.35" 286.0" | 71.4"

Those 105's don't blow up chucks or p. dogs worth a hoot, might as well stay home.

I'd rather eat a rat than to shoot a heavy bullet in anything other than a deer rifle.

Shoot'en 450 yards and under, the lighter faster bullets have it over the heavy bullets due to the rainbow trajectory of the heavier bullets. At 550 yards and beyond, the heavier bullets have it over the lighter bullets.

Shoot'en heavy bullets at 300-450 yards means that you shoot over and under a lot of critters, and if you are not blow'en them 6-12 feet in the air, might as well stay home and play with the baby's mom.

Yep, ackleyman's right. Shooting paper is one thing but who wants to just drill holes in furry things? The whole point is to see fireworks and a launch. I mostly shoot 70's at about 3800, mostly through a 13 twist, and it's very.......colorful.

What Ackleymansaid.
I've done a lot of reading about AI stats and the 243ai is highly claimed to be the most efficient over .223 and 25-06
which simply means the .243 is better improved than others. Is there a big difference between the 3?
No, but if your gona bother might as well get it right.
I have a Custom Mauser in 22-250AI.

The 22/250 AI is another fantastic Ackley round, no doubt. It may be one of the better Coyote rounds out there due to flat trajectory, lack of recoil, and down right killing power.

I shot the 60g Bergers in a 22/250 AI at 3700 fps and it was perhaps one of the best every yote rifles that I ever put together. That 60g Berger would do it's job at any distance that I required. The only problem was that the 60g Bergers would blow a bobcat half in two, hundred yards and under.

I stand corrected – the way in which I wrote my post would give the impression I “have” to make my brass for the 7x57 AI with a false shoulder. That is not the case. I choose to neck up the parent case then neck them down slowly until they chamber with a crush \ snap fit ensuring I have the correct headspace on my virgin brass. There is “no” pronounced false shoulder like that of the Gibbs line. I’ve made several fire form rounds for all 3 of my Ackley’s “with bullets” and it is true that they are just as accurate right out of the gate. This the beauty of Ackley’s design allowing factory rounds to be used in the improved chamber.
I’m in the process of working with my 244 AI; I’ll post bench results if there is any interest.

B..

LOL..

I don't use my 243AI on chucks and little critters. I use it on coyotes, deer and antelope.

I have the 220 swift for little furry critters.

So, for me and what I do in the WYOMING wind... the heavy bullets rule...

just my opinion for my application.

not arguing with you, because I know what you talk about and say is very accurate. You're one of the top guys for knowledge here on a lot of shooting things. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Yeppers, the wind gets to howling up in your neck of the woods. I shot a lot of dogs at Recluse, beautiful country, but SD I believe has worse winds than where you live.

There were times when we had to aim a body length and a half off to get the antelope when they were way out there.

I never could figure out how to eat those goats with the exception of making jerky out of them. Do you have a favorite way of eating them? Kinda reminds me of trying to eat a road runner.

Yep....

My favorite way of eating them is a full processed donation to the Bread of Life food pantry to help the needy in our community.
