I think that you are misinformed about this. I have shot thousands of rounds of 5.56 ammo through my various .223 rifles over the years with no problems of any kind. True, the pressures of some of the GI ammo is sometimes a bit higher than standard .223 stuff is, but over the last 40 years have never once heard of any issues doing it.
I may have been mis informed. When I bought my AR-15 (Eagle Arms Lower/Colt Upper w/Nato BBL). It had a NATO 5.56 bbl on it and I was told that I could shoot .223 from it but was lucky it was chambered in 5.56 cuz if it was a .223, all I could shoot out of it was .223 and not 5.56.....I was told this by an Armorer @ the Carson Armory in Mound House NV when I bought my AR. Thanks for setting me straight. Just goes to show you, even an Armorer can get it wrong......I dont know who to believe anymore
you were not misinformed, that is the general rule, 223 in 5.56 is fine, 5.56 in 223 may cause issues due to higher pressure. you can probly do it just fine in some rifles, but it comes down to is it worth risking it. to me its not but to others it may be.
+1 as an AR-15 Armorer that is the general school of thought. Err on the side of caution is the thinking I believe due to the higher pressure.
