Does anyoine have or shoot a 1895cb in 45/70. Thats the long 26 in octagon tapered barrel Cow Boy model. Im thinking of trying to find one to trade my RRA ar for.
Thanks Daryl P.

How much recoil is it? I shot a 3 1/2 in 12ga turkey gun and that was just a little much.LOL ALways wanted a 45/70 cb.
Thanks Daryl P.

I got to shoot a 45/70 for the first time couple weeks back.
Was a Marlin lever with a peep. The guy had 3 loads made up, rangeing from 30-30 recoil up to knock your teeth loose ! lol

Was fun I must say.

I have the cb version. Its one of my favorite guns to hunt with.

The recoil isnt bad at all, though the 300gr hollowpoints do set ya back a bit.

Id say its on par with a 12ga at best. but to be on the save side, if you scope it, make sure its out far enough, a few folks left bleeding after shooting mine when I had one on. (just to see how well it would shoot)

for hunting I keep open sights, sometimes Id add a red dot if im feeling crazy.

Good luck, I think youll love it!

+1 on the scope it got me pretty good once.now i have the see through scope rings and really like it set up that way with the fiber optic open sights.

I would skip the see through rings mentioned above and just get some good qd rings if you scope it. Even with the 405gr Remington soft points it is nothing for my brother and I to burn up 50 rounds just plinking. Personally I feel the 3 1/2" shotgun has the 45/70 whipped in the recoil department. IMHO

one more thing to add, I know you wanted the cb...but if you happen across an 18" guide gun with ports, Keep walking!

Its the loudest gun Ive ever fired! Horrible, Painfull even with plugs in.
I traded it for the cb 2 weeks after I bought it.

Just a heads up

Dave

does anybody use the hornady ftx leverevolution ammo.mine dosent feed the ballastic tip right and someone told me a gunsmith could add something to make it feed the right way.anyone familier with this

I have a couple of 45/70's one Marlin 1895CB and a 1874 Shilo Sharps they are some of the the most fun you can have shooting, you can load them from mild to wild and hunt just about anything in NA.

The Flex-Tip Leverevelution bullets should only be shot out of a lever with a 1-20" twist rate, not the 1-38" twist of the guns older than June of 1998. I shoot a Marlin "Triple 4", it is much like the 45-70, and will knock the snoot out of anything you aim it at. I would not sell the Rock River, just go find a 45-70 and have them both.----Riflemann

If you reload you can do just about anything as some else said from mild to pretty hot.Do be very cautious loading smokeless in that great big case.A measured charge looks like nothing and it is real easy to get in trouble.
If you shoot 2f or 1 1/2 f you cant get to much in it.In a lot of cases 70 grains of black will be compressed quite a bit.Cleaning that gun after shooting black is a lot of work if you really get it clean, also I have found the chamber to be tight after just a shot or two of black.Don't know if you are planing to play the cowboy long range stuff or not but it is the best rifle for long range lever I think.I used to shoot 19 grains of unique and a 300 gr lead bullet lubed and did quite well.

I shoot the 1895G with a 2.5x20 Leupold and it's awesome. Reloads range from give me more! to , hmm, one is enough thanks. Mine is very accurate and easy to tote through the woods.

The one to the left was the clean bore fouler, the next 5 clustered up good:

I usually shoot a 405 with 28grs IMR sr4759 or 405 with 42grs RL7 for around 1500fps. For s stout hunting load 350gr + 59.0grs H4895 = 1922fps
