Hopefully this is in the right spot if not please move. My question is are they legal to use for varmints and coyotes here. Does anyone know? I've seen some states require a 5 shot mag. Thanks in advance Jeremy

Yes. My son has been using one since he bought it a few years ago. I have never read anything about magazine capacity limits in the hunting reg. booklet you get with your hunting license. Then again if you can't hit it in 5 shots, it probable deserves to live.(Not directed at you personally)

Ha Ha! I was thinking if I couldn't hit it with 30 shots!
Seriously thanks for the reply I may be doing some trading for one, I just don't want it unless I can hunt with it.

The only reg I would be careful about is anything over 30 rounds. 30+1 will get you treated just the same as if it was full auto in the eyes of the law.
Other than that Its a three shell limit in shotguns for deer and waterfowl. Yotes, squirrels and groundhogs can be taken by pretty liberal means.

goat834,
Welcome to Predator Masters! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

A 30 round magazine is the limitation for ARs, in Ohio. Other than that, get after the varmints. I heard a simular rumor and dispelled it by e-mailing the DNR.

I certainly enjoy hunting for varmints with my Rock River Arms A4. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

where did you see this 30 round limit at or who told you about this law?
Bob

ohiobob,
I e-mailed the DNR on their web site and received a reply stating that the only magazine restrictions were for the deer gun season and waterfowl.

It's a Federal law that any magazine capacity over 30 rounds requires a Federal Permit and is considered a machine gun. That same permit covers silencers and full auto actions too.

It used to be stated in the DNR hunting regulations that silencers, full auto actions are not legal for hunting. However, the only place that machine guns are mentioned is in the waterfowl regulation. BUT, that's where the DNR puts in the clause, "these regulations are not all inclusive". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It is NOT a Federal law that says any magazine above 30 rounds is considered a machine gun. And there is no such thing as a "Federal Permit". All NFA firearms are registred and that is only requirement. There is a tax on the transfer of registration if sold or tradedn and it applies each time. If you keep the firearm for a length of time, 1 month or 20 years, you don't have to pay any more money. Full auto actions ARE machineguns. Federal migratory game laws state no more than two round capacity magazines can be used while hunting migratory waterfowl, therefore mags are restricted in this defination. State laws or regulations can add to any of these statements, so be sure to check state laws.

Absolutely false!!! Total BS.
There might be a state law restricting magazine size but there is no federal law.

I went to the Deercreek State gun range today I asked the guy working there (ODNR officer) about it. His reply was, thats what I hunt groundhogs with! I also asked about any mag. restrictions he said there was none. I was shooting my Rem. 700 he said he could hunt anywhere I could.

Jack Roberts and THA,
I stand corrected. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif I backtracked to the source of my information, which is a local law enforcement officer (part-time), did some research and found out how wrong we were.

I appreciate your clarifications. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif
