Ok this will probably turn out to be a long winded story. I got a good long time friend that farms and owns a bunch of ground , he told me ive got free run of it whereever i want to hunt is fine . So we make the first stand for about 25 minutes and nothin , its early so expected. But the second stand we knew would produce . we had a new entry game plan and everything. So we park the truck in the field entrance and walk about 600 yards over looking a huge bottom and a creek. We get sat down and are there no longer than 3 minutes and i see a white spotlight shinging across the field we are in . I instantly panic because we are out in an open winter wheat field and are all wearing brown carharts . the first thing that goes through my mind is some jackleg is shining for deer with his 300 winmag and one of the three of us is gettin ready to get lung punched .
so i stand up and shine the light towards them and i see it is a squad car . so i call my sister who works at the police dept as a jailer on my cell phone . I tell her to call the cops off , that we are coyote hunting. her exact reply was " Are you the assholes behind so and so's house" ? I said " Yeah , we are coyote hunting on ground that i have permission to be on , get him out of here he is screwing up our hunt. Then she proceeds to tell me that it is not her job and that i need to walk CLEAR BACK to the truck and tell the officer what i am doing , opposed to her simply telling the dispatcher who is seated 5 feet from her. So now im pissed off at the world , especially when she hangs up on me. so i said screw it and sat back down to continue the hunt . not 2 minutes later the spotlight hits me in the back of the head and by then i have had enough!!! i turn around and howdy doody is parked by my truck , blueberries and cherries just a blazing and he is IN MY TRUCK!!!!!!! Now im fuming , i holler at my buddies and we head up storming off to the truck . I close the gap to 100 yards and flash my red light at him a few times, he turns all his lights off and takes off ???? im thinking [beeep] ? so i get back to the truck , im absolutley livid about what has just gone on so i called my sister back and said " Hey i want to know what deputy was just in my truck , she says why ? i say because its my right no tell me. She says his name and asks again why. I told her i was going to turn him into the game warden for harrasment while hunting . And i was also going to tell the sherrif what went on seeing as how he is a close personal friend of mine who goes rabbit hunting and bird hunting with us quite often. so now she is pissed off screaming trying to play robocop . i told her someone needed to beat some sence into both of them . then she tells me i just threatened a police officer yada yada yada. So i get set up to go to the third stand. we head over to my buddys farm and we are on stand for all of 5 minutes . We got a big yote workinghis way up to the caller and a good pace . he gets to about 50 yards just getting ready to break brush and give us a clean shot when my cell phone starts blaring " I know my fault for having it turned on " and the yote bolts. its the deputy on the phone . He tells me i need to stop in at so and so's house before i go hunting and check in with them . I told him that i didnt need to because my good friend owns the ground and i have permision to do whatever i want there. then he tells me that the reason is because the guy who owns the ground i am hunting that lives on that road has had several breakins and asked that the ground get checked. Then i told him again that the guy is a good friend of mine , i told him he is lying about him having breakins and then i blew his lie apart by telling him the guy doesnt even live on that road, he lives a good ways away. so by now i know the cop is lying to me to keep me from telling the sherrif so i just start busting him up over the phone . I asked him if he was in my truck , he said that yes he was , he was searching to see if anything was wrong and if the keys were in it . Then i told him he screwed up because he didnt have my permission to search my truck THEN HE TELLS ME HE DIDNT SEARCH IT AND THAT I NEEDED TO CALM DOWN. So then i asked him why he stopped and he said because he thought someone was injured or hurt or brokedown , then i asked why if he thought someone was hurt or lost and there was a red light shining at him which a red light is aN EMERGENCY LIGHT , DIDNT HE WAIT TILL I GOT TO THE TRUCK , then just after he tells me he didnt search my truck , he says he saw my open gun case in the truck and the bullets in the floor and along with the redlight put 2 and 2 together . sure he did. then i proceeded to tell him just how stupid he was for shinging a spotlight through a field without turning the overheads on . you could tell he was nervous as sin when he hung up over the but chewing he is going to recieve tomorow i imagine . and all of this could have been averted had my idiot sister just done what she was asked but i have found with a few people NOT ALL OF THEM that when they put that badge on they lose all common sence and care nothing about helping people , they just want the authority , and then there are people like the sherriff and a couple other deputy friends of mine , they would give you the shirt off thier back if you needed it and will do anything to help someone out. sorry bout the long drawn out post but i had to vent.

Having worn the badge and dealt with many people in "inconvenient" situations over 28 years, I've found that "when they want you, they expect you to be there within 30 seconds and when you are not needed, they don't want you around"... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

If the deputy received a call/complaint about the vehicle, he was doing his job by responding. If he was either suspicious or concerned about the reason for the vehicle being there, he was doing his job.

I agree that your sister could, and should, have called him off without you having to go back to the truck. That sounds like a personal, family relationship problem to me.

Red Lens covered lights, unless they are really 'high powered' do not attract that much attention from long distance unless you are looking directly at them. If the officer's attention was on your vehicle, he probably didn't even see yours. Look at the number of drivers that fail to yield for emergency vehicles or get into wrecks with them..

While you don't need other permission to be on the property, the next time you might call the dispatcher in advance and let them know you will be there, to save a similar situation, since your being there is not a normal, daily routine.

Just a thought.

Ya sounds like A good time!!!! Thanks for callin!!! I am mumbling under my breath a bunch of words I can't type on here..........

I have to agree with Old Turtle. This sound more like a family problem than one with the law. While you know you have premission to be on the property the deputy doesn't know and was trying to look out for the land owners/community. Yes it is a pain that they screwed up a stand, even more of a pain that you had to walk back to the road but crap happens.

When the deputy looked saw and open gun case in your vehicle he could only guess at what you were doing, coyote hunting, poaching, etc... He could have been checking out of concern for you welfare (your sister could have prevented that). As for searching your truck I would have to say what right he had to do so would depend on if you left it parked on your friends propery or the side of the road (public/state property).

This thing of "I know the sherrif and we are hunting buddy and going to tell you on," sounds like a second grader Tell the sherrif what happen, and how you appreicate his deputies looking after the community and that you have premission to hunt there. I'm sure it will get back to the proper people and you will not have future problems.

I would suggest when you hunt that lock your truck and maybe stick a sign in the window to let them know you are hunting. Easy fix to save any more headache. Wh know next time you see that deputy or his co-worker you may be needing their help, or they may give you a break.

Just my two cent worth.

the best way to avoid problems like this is to put in a call to the local law and the game warden in advance.
I have never had that happen, but I always call both the landowner and the law in advance.

Sounds like the deputy was doing his job and it sounds like your sister is a [beeep].

Yeppers, lay this one at your sister's feet...sounds like PMS to me!

cop was just doing his job, at least he did not get on the loud speaker, Eh?

You should try being Hovered on at 50yds by a helicopter with a really bright light and talking on the loud speaker. Now that's a good time.

+1 in red. The dispatchers ARE the ears of the men in blue. Always good to talk with them before hand.

I used to always put a sighn in my window stating that I was hunting. Till some antis busted all the windows out of my car. Then one of the local officers decided that my vehicle should be towed due to the busted windows. Cost me a bundel to get that taken care of. Even had an officer that didnt like hunters and he would have vehicles towed by his brother that owned a towing agiency. But they are both looking for work after they towed a farmers vehicle while he was out in his field and they towed it off of private property.

I always get in touch with the local wardens so they know my truck and I have there work and home numbers in my cell.

I have only had problems with the local law when if comes to hunting. Guess they want to protect the helpless animals.

How did that affect your hunt, Soreloser? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey Mac,

What you seem to have lost track of is that you live in Illinois! People here are paranoid to say the least...

The officer was just doing his job trying to determine what was taking place out there. I know it sucks but anytime you are confronted by any officer, state, county, conservation,or otherwise it is your duty as a law abiding citizen to be civil and give proper identification and information. I carry a written permission slip with me when I'm out on private property(available from the IL Department of Conservation)and have never had problems when stopped. You are lucky that wasn't a conservation officer... you most certainly would have had a full license, vehicle and weapons check! I'm not saying you aren't right in what you did or how you hunt, just there are things you can do to make it easier on yourself and others.
Night hunting isn't that common in Illinois and many officers don't even know it is legal at this time of year for predators. Just like when deer hunting on "Corps" ground, putting a note/hunter permission slip on your dash can save you lots of grief and explanation!/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif Getting to know your local Conservation officer and calling him before you night hunt is a good thing, too!

I live in Mt.Zion so we need to get together and do some calling! There are lots of coyotes this year! Send me a PM.

I have to agree sounds like a family problem. Did you do something bad to your sister when you were both young?

Had something similar happen to me when night hunting last Spring. Partner and I always make about a 10 mile loop around our ranchers property looking for yotes and watching the cows. One morning about 2am, a set of headlights appears out of nowhere and starts in behind us, trying to eat my bumper. So I sped up a little to lose him and he stays right with us, so I pull over and he goes past me, and then tries to cut me off. I pulled around him and left him in the dust (gravel road). pretty soon he catches back up and this time is flashing lights, honking, waving, etc. So I floor it thinking this is some looney of a tree hugger trying to "get us". So we leave the property and head for the interstate where I know I can lose him. I probably drove 50 miles at 75-80 mph taking every off ramp and rest area exit to see if I could ditch him. He just stayed behind me. So I got off at the ranch again and this time I lost him after I pulled into a barn and he went by looking for us. Two weeks later we are out again and this truck spots us again about 1am, takes after us and "here we go again". Freak tried running us off the road so I said enough of this and headed for the local State Patrol office. Half way there, I get the Blue and Reds from behind. This freak had called the State Patrol and told him we were looting the farms in the area so they pulled us over. Having explained what we were doing and seeing the hunting gear we had in the truck, the officer went back and explained to the "freak" what was going on. Turns out, it was a neighbor of our rancher from about 5 miles away and an idiot that I went to high school with. He was just "patrolling the neighborhood" cuz they had some thefts going on. 2am? just out checking the roads?? Come on! We weren't even close to his place. He was a moron in high school and still is today. The patrol officer just laughed.
Hasn't bothered us since. ( my partner was the mechanic on his farm equipment that summer when his POS combine broke down in harvest and he didn't know how to fix it) "you can't fix stupid".

This is the best advice for night hunting. As long as you're Carry permits, license, and gear are all legal, you will only be checked once.

BE PLEASANT to the authorities and work WITH them not against them.

When you do shoot call dispatch and tell 'em where you shot. If they do get a call from a landowner, they can apprise the landowner of the situation. This shows the local police know whats going on to the land owner.

Follow these simple guidelines and all your hunts day and night will be trouble free.

Local officers stop once in awhile to see what I've gotten so far this year. That is the kind of relationship to build, and it just takes time.

Even had an officer out on a hunt this year!

You are right , and i told the cop on the phone that this all could have been avoided had my sister simply done what she had been asked. Altho i did talk with the sherrif thismorning and even he said the guy should not have been in my truck . But he also told me that this deputy is brand new and has been on his own for all of 3 nights. I could have handled differently but we all could handle alot of things differently , I dont think letting the Sherriff know of the activities of his deputies is second grade stuff. It is important that uneducated officers are told of what laws they are suppose to uphold and how they go about it . If there is a deputy running around just checking peoples trucks at will without asking permission then that is going to bring headaches to the whole department . We discussed it and its like the sherrif said , He isnt going to say anything to the deputy he is just gonna let him think about it , he knows he did wrong and needed to learn a lesson and the sherriff actually thanked me . The moment you let them do what they want especially fresh out of the gate then you are asking for trouble in the future , yes we have laws we must abide by but so do they and he apparently didnt understand that. as for my sister , yeah shes bout half nuts but everyone knows that.

I had a run in with two younger sheriff deputys a few years back, my calling pardner and I headed way out in the sticks close to the Nevada border, one night about 11 oclock we get to our location and shut the truck off we were sitting quitely waiting for a cool down before getting out and calling. All of the sudden behind us comes this car stops behind us and spotlights us turns on the christmas lights two of them jump out and get on the loud speaker telling us to get out and get on the ground, needles to say we where out on the ground laying on our bellys. These two guys were freaking out, the one deputy came up and cuffed my pardner, then I got cuffed then they found the guns in the seat (still in the cases) it really hit the fan then. They got us up and drug us to the hood of the squad car got our Id's and ran us both we came back clear meanwhile they were asking what we were doing? I told them "coyote hunting" They asked me if it was legal? I told them Yes in a smart butt tone then they uncuffed us told us to have a nice night. I feel these two over reacted but they do have a dangerous job and need to be safe. I didnt make a fuss with the sheriff over it......really not going to do any good anyways, small town so dont rock the boat!
