Authentic Rabbit Distress Sound

I apologize in advance if anyone is offended by the video on this link. I do not know the people or have anything to do with them or this video. I found it on huntingfootage.com. The only reason I am posting it is because it shows a rabbit shot by a young kid who is pulling it out of the bush. The rabbit is letting out natural distress sounds. I thought it would be good for all of us newbies to hear and practice with. Again, I do not know these folks and I apologize in advance.

Warning: You probably would not do this or let your kids do this. You might find it unethical. You might be offended. But then again, it's just a rabbit and you might not..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I agree 100%. There's something about the little daughter and 'stomp on his head' that just doesn't settle with me.

That is not cool. It is just plain cruel. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

Sending that kid into a briar patch is unforgivable.

That guy needs to get a dog. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Great distress sound for the beginners here to hear.

I can just imagine that video ending up in part of an anti-hunting commercial. Good sounds, bad video. A better way to hear real rabbit distress sounds is to go hunt rabbits, not watch a guy miseducate his daughter on how to hunt.

Well lets see do ya put the truck in park before you shoot out the window at game or do ya pull the keys before ya stomp on its head ??? thats my girl pass me another beer

I agree, thanks for atleast giving us the chance to hear a rabbit in distress, because I cannot tell you the last time I have seen a rabbit. We used to get them right in the back yard, but can't even remember the last time I saw one.

I suppose I don't need to comment on the rest. Too many illegal things in that video to count.

Hunting cottontails/hare is my FAVORITE thing to do. Nothing like listening to hounds chasing a cottontail. Not sure where these individuals were but apparently they are shooting snowshoe hare. I've never seen a jackrabbit in real life but I don't believe they were jacks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif. I hear cottontail squeal every so often when a crippling shot is made instead of a killing shot. It happens, especially when shooting at a fast running target. The only thing I found "disturbing" about the video is the adult's attempt to get the child to finish off the hare. I would much rather see the adult take the hare and finish it quickly or demonstrate the proper method he uses. I personally have never finished a rabbit by stepping on it's head. I simply hold it by the hind legs and strike it's head agaist the nearest solid object. I think we own it to the critters to finish them quickly and cleanly, even if they are "just rabbits". Aso aren't they shooting from a roadway? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gifOnly my .02.
I'm sure others may argue.

I think you guys have said it all. If it's that bad, then I don't want to see it, so I didn't open the web site. We may be hunters, but we shouldn't be barbarians.

RayB, thanks for your good intentions, for all to hear the real sound.

I agree. I know that intentions were good. I've heard quite a few rabbits squeal, heck I've recorded some. That clip is an example of a hare distress. Good audio lesson (minus the A-hole coaching his daughter) of a real rabbit in distress. Most guys hand calling tend to blow WAY too long on their notes. The lung capacity of a rabbit is rather tiny. Their cries are usually pretty hyperventilated. Cottontails can hit some seriously high notes, that'll make your hair raise on the back of your head. That's what I try to imitate on a call.

Thanks for posting...Tony

UNREAL!!!!! Are you telling me people can’t go walk around for Rabbits anymore?

That's exactly what I thought when I heard it. I've been guilty of blowing too long and too hard. I'll need to practice more with the hyperventilating.

Again, my apologies for the graphic video. If I could have pulled just the sounds I would have.

I didn't download, it would probably take all day with dial-up. As a teen I hunted rabbits (cottontail in this part of the country) with redtails, rabbits squeal 85%-90% of the time when caught by a hawk, not for long, but long enough to know what they sound like. If you know of anyone in your area who is active in falconry, a trip or two with them would be a great way to hear a rabbit and a fun way to spend a afternoon.

I've shot 100's if not 1000's of Jack Rabbits and have had several opportunities to hear their distress sounds. That's the best way to learn to imitate.
But, on the other hand I taught my daughters "one shot, one kill." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
I didn't realize road hunting snowshoes was legal ANYWHERE! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

That's something I'd give up a day of calling for. I've always been fascinated with falconry...just never did it.

It was disturbing as stated. But if you want the exact sounds, actual rabbit in distress sounds, buy a cassette from Sceary of cottontail and jackrabbit. I had mine converted and put in my Foxpro. I'm going to try it out soon, now that most hunting is done with in this state. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

"I Am Supreme. I Can Cause Undue Suffering And Indoctrinate My Offspring Into The Fold By Teaching That Suffering Caused By Me Is Acceptable" so sayeth the almighty parent. You may be seated.
I don't get it. Put the animal down asap, you have a bit of a responsibility to end the procedings as humane as possible. You teach your daughter not to twist the dogs ear dont you? Teach your kids a love and respect for the workings of nature. I don't know, maybe I just don't get it. Yes I've shot jackrabbits and heard the pain cries but I was always taught to end it asap out of respect for the animal.

That clip was disturbing to me too, however it did make me realize that I have been blowing my distress calls to long. It was an eye opener for me.

That is a great education tool. But like everyone else said that guy is a real dipsh*t when it comes to setting a good example for his kid. I hope he doesnt call himself a hunter. Just my opinion on the whole thing.
