Baby Glock G42

I almost bought my wife a .380. Glad a 9 pleased her more!

I load my own, both target and self defense. I don't buy
factory pistol ammo, except when I travel with handguns.
Commercial ammo, or at least ammo in commercial packages
gets one through check-in with less chance of issue.
I have a progressive press, with the tooling for 380 Auto,
9mmx19, 40 S&W, 45 Auto, and 10mm Auto. Sure helped to have
the capability to load, when others were searching for ammo,
and paying too much for it.

I agree, to an extent. I buy 100 pk WWB's 9mm for $26....it was $20 in 2008. 40 S&W is $35 where I buy.

I've got at least a 1000 9mm cases I'm going to load next winter, but I have a feeling I won't be saving much money. Thoughts?

You already have the brass...that's a good bit of cost.

1 pound of powder will last you quite a while. Like 2000 rounds?

Deals are everywhere on bullets. Just google search a bit and you'll find a big box of pills for little cost.

Add primers, and you're in there.

Cost saving? Slightly. But I enjoy loading and so that is part of the decision. I'd go ahead and reload.

$25/lb of powder
$120/1000 bullets
$35/1000 primers

$120 ish for 1000 quality loaded rounds...and you still have 1/2 pound of powder for the next 1000. That's about 2/3 the cost, maybe less if you can find a good deal somewhere. I think it's a good deal.

The cost of hand loading really comes down to how much you
buy, and what you have to spend for the initial equipment
investment. And consider your time very cheap.

I buy powder 8 lbs at a time, bullets by the 1000, and primers
by the 1000, too. And I shop deals. If I don't count my
time, and put a few pennies per load towards equipment costs,
my rule of thumb is about 50% of the cost of comparable
factory ammo, for my hand loads. It could be a bit higher of
a percentage for common cartridges, like 9mmx19, and a lower
percentage for uncommon cartridges like 10mm Auto or 380
Auto. The real costs don't include the security in always
having a way to get more ammo, and I have a consistent load,
and load quality. As an example, a box of 50 380 Auto loads,
costs me $6.5 to load, not counting my time. You probably
won't find a box of 50 100 gr. RNHB loads for that price.
And anytime I need more ammo, I fire up the Hornady AP, and
crank out a few hundred more.

I have to agree with some of the other posters on the size of this Glock as a .380. While I like Glocks, they're not even in the same size class of the .380 LCPs, Kel-Tecs or Diamondbacks for size. If you're trying to match the current class of pocket .380s, Glock went too large, IMO.

The only reason that I went "down" to a .380 (Diamondback in my case - made in Florida) for daily carry is because my work "uniform" is khaki pants with a tucked in shirt and I bend and crouch a lot during my inspections and needed pocket carry. The .380s mentioned above all have the same basic dimensions, but unless Glock is trying to create a niche where there isn't one, I think they missed the boat on size for a pocket-size .380 semi-auto.

glock is trying to get on board with the 380 kick, IMO they still need to get a good bit smaller as many have stated, I currently carry a kahr cw9 (with my tube of vagisil) in the winter months and a keltec p3ta 380 stoked with 95g gold dots in the summer simply for its size. In a pocket holster you will forget your even wearing it, within reasonable distance I have no trouble putting them where they need to be

I shot the G42 last week. My mom wanted me to take her shooting because she hand not been in years and is in the market for a gun. They happened to have one for rent at 2A in Tulsa and we were the first to shoot it. Very sweet shooting gun! It felt like shooting a miniature version of my G22. Same trigger guard and everything. My mom loved it and is on the waiting list for one now. It has very little recoil (as expected) fits her hand and goes boom every time you pull the trigger typical Glock. For a smaller gun it was accurate for me out to 25yards. I could see one in my near future but I might wait on the single stack nine they keep talking about…

Thanks. I already have the equipment...I reload rifle ammo. I just remember a few years back I did the math and the savings to do 9mm wasn't worth it...at the time. I'm guessing it's come full circle now that ammo has gone up.

My thoughts exactly. I bet it'll be the same size as the G42 though, next year. I already carry a Kahr PM9 (all black) in the summer. I wish Glock made one that was comparable.

Actually, the powder I use(Hodgdon Universal) was less
than $18/lb, in a 8 lb jug, at my local Rod&Gun club.
And the Berry's plated 100 gr. RNHB bullets I load in
the 380, are $80/1000 with shipping. Primers were
$33.30/1000 with sales tax at a local supplier, when I
purchased Sunday. My point is shop around, and one
can trim a few pennies out of each round. And even
9mmx19 ammo can be loaded for a substantial savings,
when one can even find it.

Back to the original topic, of the G42, I am seeing a number
of comments on how the G42 should have been a 9mm, or
why a not so pocket sized 380 from Glock. Ruger did the
same thing with their LC-9 morphed into the LC-380, and
I didn't hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth.
lol.gif

I think it a good size for folks that want a soft shooting
small pistol for personal defense. Ruger was on to something,
and Glock saw a way to kill two birds with one stone. The
G26 sized 380, not sold in the USA, except to LEOs, has always
been in demand, and people have been calling for a single
stack thin Glock. So enter the Glock 42. Yes Glock could
have gone the way of Ruger, and introduce the 9mmx19 single
stack, and then the 380 single stack, but their market
analysis must have shown a different strategy. I think this
plan will work well for them.

Oh, certainly shop around. The prices I posted were kind of 'middle of the road'. But the point still remains, one can save, per round, reloading. Sometimes, quite a bit.

UPDATE!!!!

2000 plus rounds in the G42 and not a hiccup or cleaning. Like all Glocks it has AK47 reliability as expected with Glocks the main reason we shoot Glocks cause they aint the prettiest gun in town. Yes Glock could have made it smaller, yes they could have made a single stack 9 (I would have purchased that also)but they didn't. Like it, love it or hate it but now you have one more to choose from and I personally love mine.

I also agree about the trigger but I did a trigger job and that smoothed it out considerably. I do this on all my Glocks.

My wife also received the Springfield XDS 9 4 inch and she cant decide what gun she likes better.
