best coyote gun for the $

i was wondering what the best rifle caliber for yotes was and what brand of gun would be best. There are many open fields and we can have some long shots, but need a gun that will do minimul damage to fur.

If you dont mind single shots, The H&R .223 or .243 heavy barrel rifles are great and they wont break the bank. Either only costs a few $100 bucks. Put a good scope and bi-pod on it and you will be styleing.

If you are wanting new, i would say a savage in 22-250 maybe or 223. Depends on how far you shoot, or how much wind you deal with. The 223 will do less damage on the fur!

I think that the best coyote gun for the money is usually a used one. Lots of good deals over there on the used shelf. I picked up an uglier than normal (lots of character on this gun) Savage 110 in a .223 for $220. That included a nasty old Tasco scope that will be replaced shortly but has held its zero for over a year. It just isn't very clear and my confidence in it is shaky. This gun shoots better than I do, but that isn't that hard! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Keep on eye on those used guns!

I bought my rifle at cal-ranch for $270 brand new. It is a savage 11g 22-250. It has a walnut stock, 22'' button rifled barrel. I can shoot .5" @100 with factory loaded winchester cpx1's. I love this rifle, it has been good to me. It is certainly cheep, but good.

I have noticed very few people in this forum recommend the .17hmr. Another website called Coyotegods.com seems to fiercly advocate this round, claiming to have shot 300 coyotes with it. What do you guys think?

I am preparing to buy myself a coyote gun for a Christmas present. On a very limited budget, I can probably go no higher than $350 for the whole package right now. WallyWorld has a .17 Marlin for $180 and that would leave me plenty for a decent scope. Do that seem like a deal or should I save my pennies?

Mangote...you better check your facts, I don't think the Coyote Gods recomends the 17HMR ...the .17 Rem , yes but they are two different calibers and I don't think the 17 HMR will get the job done like you think!John Henry is a devout .17 cal fan but only in a centerfire and the hmr is rimfire and NOT THE SAME!!!

For the money you cant go wrong with a .223 nef handi rifle...i have a laminated walnut stock with bull barrel and weaver bases for 209.00 brand new shoots awesome and your local walmart can get you one in less than a week..

I would agree with both the Savage in a variety of flavors, and the NEF or H&R Ultra as best buys for the $. I have one of each - a Savage 10FP Tactical 223, and a NEF Superlight Handi Rifle 223.

I bought a savage 22-250 last year. Its one of the best rifles i have shot. Got a 6.5 x 20 simmons scope on it.It will reach out and lay mister yot down. I reload and shoot a 50 gr seirra blitz-king bullet. Shooting about 3800 fps and real fur friendly with this load. It was more than i wanted to spend but glad i did.

Add the Accu-trigger and I will second the "Savage motion"!

Best gun for the money: Savage

Least expensive (new): NEF

Best gun period: Browning A-bolt w/ the BOSS!

My local gun shop has a Winchester Black Shadow in .223WSSM for $450. What experience do you guys have with this rifle/round? I love the look and feel of the black shadow and the WSSM seems to be pretty popular.

I'd be interested in finding out what others think of it.

The 223 WSSM is a pretty cool little round, but I would buy a .223 or a 22-250. The ammo is so much cheaper for these rounds. As well as all of the different bullet choices(weight and style)available. Just my opinion though. Later

Winchester touts its STEALTH MODEL 70 as the ultimate varmint/predator rifle. Why? I don't know.

Outdoor Life recently named the Savage Model 12 BVSS laminated stock .22-250 as its Editor's Choice for a rifle in 2003.

Savage also makes a .22-250 with a synthetic stock, stainless fluted heavy barrel, and dual pillar bedding. It is the FVSS Model 12. I'm getting one of these for about $325.00 new in the box.

good huntin'
