have a new gun on order. the rem 700 vssf II in .204. what kind of rings and bases should i pick up with it? what brand looks, fits best. and the height i should use for a 40mm scope? and some oppionions if i should get a stainless base with black rings, or what combo looks best on that gun?

scope will hafto come next paycheck but i think i'll go for a bushnell elite 4200 4-16x40. sound like a good scope for about 90% gophers and magpies and 10%coyotes? or else id just get another 3200 5-15x40 like i have on the hmr.

With the light recoil almost any will work well. I'm kind into the Leupold two piece rings and bases and they look really good on the 700's Some folks like the single piece Leupold base and I have a mix on on several Remingtons. I can't tell any difference in accuracy. Standard Hight rings should handle a 40mm bell. I like to keep the scope as close to the barrel as I can.

Leupold or the Millet copy, they keep you from using up your windage adjustment and standard height rings should clear your 40mm scope bell.

Definately Leupold, 2 piece works great, or a one piece for more rigidity on a benchgun/heavy recoiling rifle. Color combo depending on your preference.

I just went through this with a Remington 700 ADL in 6mm Remington caliber. I bought a set of dual dovetail rings & bases and mounted a Leupold scope on the rifle. Went out to the range for sight-in, starting @ 25 yards, discovered I was out of windage adjustment.
I ended up buying the Leupold Standard bases and rings which have windage adjustment in the rear base. The Standard bases solved my problem.
The problem is that some Remington Rifles have the scope mounting screws mis-drilled from the factory and apparently this situation is not that unusual.
Good luck with your new rifle and I would recommend the Leupold bases & rings.

The Burris Signature rings are the cat's meow. They have the plastic inserts that will NEVER put a mark on a scope.

The plastic inserts are graduated in various sizes so that you can "shim" the front or back of the scope using the rings. By shimming the back of the scope, you can keep the scope adjustments optically centered.

The burris signature rings also come in the Windage adjustable type of bases, also.

+100! Talley LW's.
If the holes are badly misdrilled in the receiver, the rifle goes back to the manufacturer!!!! If it's a Remington, they'll probably need to be lapped(trued) as should all other mounts without plastic inserts. They really should be bedded too,IMHO, but I'm just kinda particular in those regards!

I recently mounted a Millett Tactical Rifle Scope on a Remington 700 BDL rifle. I used a one piece, pictinney rail style mount from Gun Crafter's, in PA. This is a Warne type one piece except it is made from aluminum. I used Leaper's 30mm medium rise scope rings. These are a copy of military style rings with hex nut adjusters on the side instead of the round, knurled, Weaver style. I like these rings except that the fasterners are all metric.

I did not have any problems zeroing my scope. I had plenty of windage.

The "best" rings and bases for a 700? You will get a lot of opinions on this one. I am real partial to Nightforce rings and bases or Ken Farrel rings and bases. Both are overkill on a .204 Ruger.

I use Warne Pictany bases on all my rifles now. For rings, I use the Warne Tactical. Reason for this is if one has Picty rail bases you can swap off scope between rifles and they will fit. Reason for the rings is they have a nut attachment for use with a torque wrench. Re-zero is on the money when attaching the same scope that has not been adjusted to some other rifle/load. Even at that it is still close to zero when you put it back. If you have an AR style rifle, the rings will fit that flat-top base as well. Makes for being able to use one or two really good scopes that are easy to remove, put back on, and zero.
