Wondering what you guys are using for scope mounts for your AR varmint rigs. Are the Leupold 2 piece AR rings popular?
That's certainly a terrific deal on the Armalite one piece mount, especially if you're mounting a scope that's been previously mounted (and now has "ring marks", etc.).
If you're mounting a new scope, and you don't want to put "ring marks" on it, you might want to take a look at the Burris Signature Zee Rings. They are rings that have polymer inserts that prevent marking up a new scope tube. They're available in both 1.0", and 30mm.
One of the best features of the Zee Rings IMO, is that you can get them with a set of polymer inserts that have predetermined "offsets". This will allow you to get the scope close to zero by just using the inserts. Then you use your regular windage, and elevation adjustments on the scope for the final fine tuning of your scope. You also don't have to be concerned about lapping with the Zee Rings.
On an AR, it will probably be necessary to purchase an extended rail (that just mounts to the rail on the upper) to allow you to get the scope far enough forward. You don't need but about 2-3" of extension forward of the existing rail on the upper for most scopes to be positioned properly.
Definitely not the cheapest way to mount a scope on an AR, but it does have its advantages, and is a very well thought out system IMHO.
Hangtime.
