Best Scope under $500

I have a couple of dozen Luepold vx1, vx2, vx3, & mark 4's but plan on purchasing a nikon monark this time around in 2.5x42mm with a BDC rectical for my up comming elk muzzel loader hunt. They are for sale NIB on ebay for $276 plus shipping. I currently have a VX1 2x7 on my rifle right now and is very clear but to pick I want to up some extra maginification. If I wanted to pick up a 2.5x10 optic in a Luepold or any higher end optic I would be starting at about a grand to thirteen hundred...and their glass is not as clear as the cheaper Nikons. As a matter a fact none of my Leupolds glass is as bright or clear as the nikons! The only downfall is that the Nikons do weigh more. Best binocular for the money... Nikon 10x42mm ATB, if you look through Zeiss, Swarovski, or doctor binocs in the same size Its impossible to tell the difference.

Best I have used for that price is the Bushnell 4200 elite series.

Yup. I have yet to see a better scope for the money. They are at least as clear any of my Leupolds. So much so that if starting new today I would be buying nothing but 4200's. I'm not getting rid of any of my Leupolds mind you, as they are excellent scopes. But any scope that I buy in the future will almost certainly be a 4200.

Are you guys questioning his service to OUR country? I am pretty [beeep] sure most snipers aren't gear freaks like the rest of us. Hell, most probably can't afford a Mark 4, yet they put their [beeep] on the line for you!

I swear, if I heard some of these comments face to face, there would be some broken jaws.

Riiiiight....

Mr. Tough guy,

I'm calling BS when I smell it and I smell a Troll.

Has he backed up his comments? I haven't seen him post anything else... Wait, he must be sniping with his Barskas... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

So you believe everything you read on the net is true?

RELAX there big guy!!

I cannot speak for SuperSeal, but I can say for my self, that as a precision rifle instructor I feel fairly justified in throwing the BS flag when I smell something. Besides, claiming to be an Army sniper is very easy to verify with just a couple of emails. Not that being a sniper is that big of a deal quite frankly. The schoools are cranking them out in huge numbers these days. Now being a GOOD one is a big deal and takes years of experience. But still when I smell something fishy.....

In regards to breaking my jaw, that will have to wait. I am still in Iraq, on my 7th tour.

But I appreciate your enthusiasm! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Also,Please be gentle, as I am delicate! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In all seriousness, I figure you were just fired up over some internet slug sharpshooting a serviceman and I take no issue with that!

I would half to go with a Barska, not many people have heard of them and i have one. I was skeptical at first but For 200 bones i gave it a try, its a awsome scope. Much like my Leopold mark four only a grand less in price. The barska comes in like three different models, one a 6x24x44 and a 10x40x50 and not sure one the third, all the scopes have finger adjustable target knobs and side paralax adjustment and come with a five inch sun shade and flip open scope caps. Good clarity and quality for that cheap of a scope, just like a leo mark four, which i used in iraq while serving in a infantry unit as the platoon sniper. Finger adjustable target knobs and mil dots are the ONLY way to go in my book, exspecially after sniper school lol.

If this guy can interpret mildot, then I am Santa.

I can't believe I missed this, there is no such thing as a platoon "sniper" LOL that has been to Benning with a Barska.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gifI am not fond of posers!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Billygoat PM inbound ....

OK HighBean

I"ll say the Leupold 6x18 Target is a great buy for under $500. Good power range, good glass, great customer service, repeatable target knobs, what is there not to like?

I had a MK4 4.5-14x50 LR, SF, 30mm tube, and I very highly doubt a $200 BARSKA is even half close to giving you the clarity and ruggedness of the MK4. Thats got to be one of the funniest things I"ve read all month, lol.

I'm not sure about the $500. mark, but for half of that I kind of like the NEW GENERATION Millet x56 scopes with side focus. That's just my opinion, but then my DD214 clearly states that I was never in sniper school & I'm OK with that.

I think I will try out a 4-16x40 Bushnell 4200

Good choice. You'll be able to find an elk at 4X easy enough, and 16X will get you out there anywhere reasonable for hunting, even antelope and varmints.
The 4X zoom range is really a nice advancement.
I elk hunt with a 3-9 and it's normally on 5X, so you're good to go, in my opinion.
Good luck! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I am just going to sneak in here and try to stay clear of the $#!^ flinging but I have used some of the good scopes mentioned (Nikon, Bushnell, Zeiss, Burris and Leupold) and would have to agree. But I have just received a scope that I bought about a month ago and I have to say that for the money its very nice!! Its called a Falcon Menace w/ 1/4" moa turetts although for what I bought it for she is a little heavy but a well built scope none the less. I purchased this scope on a group buy and paid I think $340.00!! In my humble opinion I think it was a fantastic buy, I just wished it was a little lighter. I will see if I can find a pic and edit my post.

Let the flinging comence!

I keep hearing about glass. To me glass is not all that important. Holding zero and repeatability are much more important. Of course a lot depends on mounts but I have seen many scopes that just will not hold zero. I still believe the best idea out there is a Shepherd scope, but unfortunately I did not have that good luck with them holding zero. I have a Leupold that has ridden on a 4 wheeler rack all summer mounted to a DPMS 308 and it is still right on the money.

Welcome back man. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

7 tours......wow, thanks for your service.

Under $500 bucks O'cmon don't you have a credit card. Just throw down your $500 bucks and pay the balance with your card and purchase a Bushnell elite 6500 2.5x16x42MM Optic Zone has them for under $600 and shipping is free. I have one and I put a huge hole in a coyotes neck when he was in a sea of Nevada sage brush. I have two 4200s that are great ,but the 6500 is above for just a little more cash$$$$$$$$$$

I bought a Bushnell 4200 8-32X from a PM member and all I can says is WOW! Super clear and bright. It dosen't have a lot of MOA adjustment, but all I use it for is 100-300 bench shooting.
