Black Bear 44mag or 10mm

Go ahead and throw rocks...I hope the bear doesn't stuff them
someplace to fatten you up for a meal. I will be throwing
200 gr. XTPs, at 1250 fps, if the bear doesn't beat a hasty
retreat.

27 cases out of how many millions of people that are camping and hiking in bear country every single day? On the other hand there was about a dozen attacks in montana in just one year from grizzly.

I think the real black bear danger is while you are asleep in your tent. forget something in your pocket like chapstick and the bear crashes into the tent. You are so drunk you don't even hear anything till its too late.

I always get a chuckle out of the bells and pepper story.

I agree 100% but some people can not shoot and hit the side of a barn with the 44. Best rule of thumb is carry the largest caliber you can shoot with good accuracy.

Yeah... but who wants to be number 28?

I have been in woods and come upon bear tracks. 2 little sets, and one big set, once. Get between those 2 small sets and one large set while they are still laying them down, and you will come to appreciate a large sidearm. I did....

Imagine what it would feel like if your only line of self defense was to $hit your pants in order to make yourself taste bad.

Hence, the revolver.....

Thats funny right there!

When I'm not carrying a rifle when I'm out and about I carry either a 10mm, 44 mag or 454 depending where I am. Bears are fast and very quiet. And I have even hunted them in the UP.

There are actually more black bear attacks documented on humans than grizzly attacks in the US. Obviously, cuz there's more black bears by far. Experts recommend playing dead with a grizz as they MAY lose interest, and let you live thinking you're dead. With black bears, they say to fight to the death with whatever you have once the attack starts - they won't quit. Here in PA we had a guy attacked in his archery treestand a couple of years ago, and just had a young girl last year on a deer drive attacked and mauled by a black bear. We have around 30,000 bears in this state now - quite common, and even in the cities. I've hit 'em with rocks to, and know people at camps hand feed them, but sooner or later, they're gonna take a chunk outta somebody. They are incredibly quick when they want to be, and an attitude and some rocks won't turn them when they finally don't want to.

I recall something about a walking softly and carrying a big stick.......I believe he used a 405?

The thing to remember is "grizzlies want to kill you, blacks want to eat you".

Loaded with some 180gr hard casts a .357mag snubby would be as good as anything for getting a bear to stop chewing on you.
