BLACK COYOTES

My conversations with plumbrich in Alabama have sparked an interest in these animals and I will share any info I learn from my research.
Everyone who has called or personally seen a black coyote please post the general location of the sighting and the weight of the animal if known.
EDIT: The eye color is important as well, if you know it.

Seen only 4 Blacks, over 42yrs. All had a White crest on their chest.

All in [West-central] Marshall County, Iowa.

Estimated; [1] 40-45lbs[Jet-Black]. The rest were dirty Black, [1] mid to upper 40's[pushing 50, IMO]. The other [2] low 30's.

Saw one black while hunting the LBL in Kentucky during February 2003. Did not get a shot on the animal. I estimate the coyote to be between 25 and 35 lbs. It had a very light brindel coloration of a few silver streaks on its sides.

I personally have never seen a black coyote (live one), but a friend I know did see one while bowhunting and told me about it. He was hoping to get a shot at it and he let the one in front pass. He was busted by the lead dog and never got a shot at either, and never saw the black again.

Also, I personally saw a black coyote tanned skin at a local taxidermist shop. The taxidermist told me it was a road kill from the area, about 20 miles from my home. That was about 6 or 7 years ago and I don't specifically remember seeing any white on it.

Saw a few at my place in east Texas (Diboll) a couple of years ago, only able to get one. My friend also killed a small one about 20 miles away on his place. No idea of the weight. Mine also had a white patch. Tanned the hide and still thinking about mounting it.

Rich, this should be interesting. I don't know of anyone in the old CVCA that has ever killed one or even seen one. I hope you guys get some answers to the black coyote...Good luck and good hunting this coming year.

Saw one the last two years from my deer stand on numerous occasions. The spot was the NY border close to Conn. He looks to be better than average weight in perfect condition. Almost got a bow shot on him last year. He is what started this whole thing for me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif And is how I came across P.M. Hope to get a shot at him this year!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

About 3 weeks ago a young man thats doing government work near here, called in a nice black coyote. On the pictures,i could see no white patch.I would guess the weight of that coyote at about 35 lbs.

I got a picture of a coyote we caught in a trap that has a black tail and a lot of black hair on its back and face.
The picture is 601 pixels and I can only show pictures here thats 600 pixels...Only one pixel? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif When i put the picture in photo bucket it was 600 pixels. When i transfer it over here,it grows one pixel /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gifLOL

I have called in 4 in South Carolina. Three of them went down under the gun. The first one was black and silver. Looked like this. This was a female and she weighed 28 pounds.

The second one was on the same farm a week later but looked entirly different. It looked like this. It was a male and weighed 31 pounds.

The third one was solid black but with a grizzled face, it was the one that got away. I would estimate him to way 40 pounds or close to it. It was on a farm about 20 miles away from where I killed the first two.

The last black SC coyote I have called in looked like this and it does have a small white patch of hair on its chest. It was a female and weighed about 28 pounds.

I have seen one more black one that I didn't get a shot at in West Virginia. I seen it 6 years ago and then year before last I seen it, or another one just like it, again. On the same farm within 200 yards of where I seen it the first time.

Rich if you have any other questions I can help you with let me know.

I have seen one in Pennsylvania that I would guess to weigh
about 30-35lbs. A friend of mine also saw one in Pa but I
don't know the weight on it.

i have saw only 1 and it was with 3 other yotes at about 200 yards. one of the other yotes was very light colored also, it made the group look very funny.

Rich, I have seen 2 in the last 2 years that look alot like the last picture posted. They weighed between 20 to 25 lbs. I spotted them on our ranch in eastern MT.

I have seen two black coyotes, and killed em both. One was three miles north of Council Bluffs, Iowa and the other was about ten miles south. Both were adult coyotes, but I didn't weigh them.

go east and west or south of Birmingham,Al.The ones we(club members)was culling where in Pineapple,AL.So far I haven't seen any blacks in Mississippi yet.

Rich, Great thread!

I've seen two here in Central Illinois. The first one was a big one in a group of three, maybe 40-45lbs, no gun! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
The second was in a pack of seven, this one maybe 35-40lbs, no shot. The first had an almost gray/silver cast, the second very dark legs and back with light highlights, neither had white blazes.
We did shoot one of the seven and it was about 35lbs and very light almost blonde. I've never seen one quite as black as some of these guys... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I'm still hoping!

Jimmie in Ky told me about several in the LBL... that's where the name for my calls came from! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
