BLACK COYOTES

Red Lobo,

I seen your [last pic] awhile back. This time around, I spent more time looking @ that Black coyote's physical features.

Perhaps just the camera angle & lighting. But he looks to have a very long torso, & neck. Not to mention both are stout.

Also where the neck fur meets the head. The fur demarkation line is abrupt.

Wonder if he's all coyote? Whats your opinion?

I've killed two. One was several years ago, young male about 25 pounds. The other was a couple of years ago, older male about 35 pounds. both were in East Texas. I've seen several and have three or four on film. I've also seen some real dark but not what I would call black coyotes. Never have seen on in West Texas. Not sure about the eye color on the first but the last were golden just like a regular coyotes.

Here are some pics of the last black coyote I killed.

Rich, it will be interesting to see what you can discover. I'll bet what you find is it is just a color phase and that it is mostly predominant in the Eastern variety. Keep us posted.

Byron

Byron, I'm thinking the same. The black coyote does not seem to show up out west like it does in other parts of the country.
I'm hoping Rich's findings well give us some kind of understanding about the black coyote.

I'm glad you guys have posted the pics of those beautiful and interesting animals. I'm waiting for plumbrich to post his pics and then I'll take a lot of time and post everything that I've dug up. Fascinating. I believe it is possible that we are witnessing evolution and natural selection in fast forward.

Kirby...hard to say. The one I killed had a white patch on his chest. This one, when I have called him in to the spotlight, had a small white patch as well. He does have dome different features though doesnt he?

Only one I have ever seen was near Statesville, North Carolina. I watched him take a dump and the scat was full of Persimmons skin. Nice black coyote at about 30-35 pounds estimated.

Whereabouts in LBL have you guys had success? It's only about 45 minutes down the road, and I've been thinking about hunting it this fall. I didn't know so many people called yotes there.
