HARTWICK - After years of hearsay and speculation, local biologists said this week that an animal photographed in the Town of Hartwick is a mountain lion. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officials in Stamford said the animal in the picture looks more like a bobcat, but if it is a mountain lion, it would be the first proof of such an animal in Otsego County in more than a century.
The man who snapped the photo said the sighting was almost an accident.
"I was watching the evening news one night back in June, when I got up to get a glass of water," said a Town of Hartwick resident who asked to remain anonymous. "As I was doing so, I noticed a large animal moving through my back yard. I told my wife that there was a bobcat out back, and to grab the camera. She came around the corner with the camera and said, 'that's not a bobcat. That's a mountain lion.'"

I don't know if anyone else saw in the Buffalo News of a Hamburg man who has one on tape. It also took down the guys 3D deer target with huge claw marks on the neck of it.Not sure if this is the same story the above article covers or not.

Thoughts/opinions????

This was on another board at huntingpa.com and I was wondering if you westerners or anyone for that matter who see both mtn lions and bobcats.

Lots of lion sitings from that area, but I would lean hard towards bobcat, mostly from the head ears and neck in proportion to the body, also from the white outter ear and lastly the tail. But I sure could be wrong, lol.

Low resolution to the photo, but if the black tip of the stubby tail, and what appears to spots in the white tenderloins hold up it would confirm this is a bobcat.

This is the photo blown up...looks like a lion to me....

This is a tough one. The head looks lion, the back of the right ear (white) looks bobcat but the tail appears to be longer than a bobcats.

I would have to say my guess would be non-conclusive. Nothing like having a set of tracks to look at to make the final call.

Hmmmm, that looks kind of like my grandma's cat that she lost a few years ago... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thats a bobcat. The white throat, white spot on back of right ear and you can see the short tail with black tip. I would bet that that cat is a bobcat. Ron

Well my 2 cents
mountian lion tail looks to me as being carried down coming right off its rump which to me looks mountain lion as they run down and cure back up and also are black tip biggest differance is lenght of tail which here we really can't tell.\
My biggest thinking this is mountain lion is looks of its head and face face and head seem more like lion and it appears to me in picture and also hair on head and body seem slicker like lion.
