Bolt action 6 groups, 5 shot challenge

Here's something I can add to this thread from a few months back.

Details:

Remington Model 7 Action (Originally .17 Fireball)
Rock Creek .20 Cal Barrel 1:12 finished at 25".
HS Precision Stock
Trued Action
Surface Ground Recoil Lug
Lapped Bolt Lugs
Trigger Job
Chamber cut as .20 VarTarg w/ .232 Neck, zero freebore
Action bedded and free floated barrel

Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x44 Scope with SF

DSCN1045.jpg

Here is the first shooting I did with it. No break in. About 5 shots to get it on paper and then I started dialing it in.

Posting the whole target lest I get charged with "cherry picking".

Remington 221 FB Brass, FL sized to 20VT, Remington 7 1/2 Primers.

Large Target - 5 shots to sight in using 32gr V-Max and 18.4gr of H4198 (.758 - .204 = .554)

Top Left - 5 shots 32gr V-Max and 18.0gr of H4198 (.715 - .204 = .511)
Left Middle - 5 shots 32gr V-Max and 18.2gr of H4198 (.526 - .204 = .322)
(For some reason, it looks like only 3 shots hit the paper. Can't explain that one.)
Bottom Left Corner - 5 shots 32gr V-Max and 18.4gr of H4198 (.505 - .204 = .301)
Bottom Center - 5 shots 32gr V-Max and 18.6gr of H4198 (.804 - .204 = .600)
Bottom Right - 5 shots 32gr V-Max and 18.8gr of H4198 (.931 - .204 = .727)

I know they're different loads and I would think that puts me at an disadvantage, but this is all for fun so I'll take my chances.

Average group size = .503

This was shot off a bench at Bristol Range in Bristol, WI. I use a Protector rear bag and a CaldWell Rock front rest. Shot within an hour or so on the same day. 100 Yards distance.

Note: These are MY loads in MY gun so please, don't duplicate them.

I haven't chrono'ed them so I don't know where they're cooking at. I can tell you that I hit multiple PDs are 400 yards on our recent trip. All in all, on of my favorite rifles.

Thanks dmpowder!!

Stevens 200 , 223 , 27.1-win748-50gr V-Max again other than a trigger spring its just as it came out of the box. .446 - .680 -.580 -.436 -.520 -1.190 and yes that low hit was the last of 30 shots

Ok guys sorry about being late updating the boards.

That is carzy load testing on one target Coleridge! I think I would forget which load was what...Plus I wouldn't wanna walk all that to mark the target.

Great shooting to all we now have past leaders and some people did drop down.

Won't count until all rules have been followed. I just seen the tightest group in the semi shootout from venatic and can't count his target as he didn't follow the rules. He didn't have enough holes and you posted too many.
lol.gif
Wait was he shooting with you? He did say he didn't wanna talk about his 3 shots not on the boards????

Dude.. U gota cut some groups off or something. If thats a factory gun at 100 yards, very impressive. Get it together & post a target via rules. Thats a contender for sure.

Hey wait a minute, is that pencil punchin?

Excellent

If I can get to the range tomorrow, I'll try again with some of the free 6 square targets from LEE, from the link posted.

Either way, if I shoot 1" groups, it'll still be fun.

Agreed! It sucks to not be able to post up peoples great targets but the rules are rules. Other wise we could just go back to that 1 single target thing. Venatic's was still the hardest to not be able to post!

Also for got to mention when I did the last leader boards. I added Hammerjack to the boards but did not count his spot as he is not a member here. That why his stats still stand but not really count if you know what I mean. Unless he is or becomes a member then they will count.

Actually what happened was I grabbed a box I thought I had loaded with 55gr Kangaroo bullets for fire-forming and when I got to the range it was 50 pieces of primed brass. So I ran out....

I would have had even less but there was a few rounds in the magazine. The choice was make the 30 mile trip back out to the range to shoot 3 rounds or go hunting after retrieving more ammo. I was going to shoot the target the next day while running around doing some hunting and some work just off the hood but I forgot the target on my table where I took the picture.

Don't be too hard on Coyotejunki, It took him 3 days to figure how to get the safety off from the CZ. It's bassackwards dontcha know?

Archery season is in here. No shooting unless it is on Sunday, after churches let out, and during good weather. A lot of stars to line up it seems

. My trigger finger is stiffening up, this waiting is killing me. May try to hit a local farm this Sunday if the weather cooperates and see if I can shoot the 243 bolt and the AR.

Update: Mother Nature hates me
cursing.gif
. 3' tall thistles and gusting winds 15-20mph. Gotta find another range for the rest of the year and hope for better weather.

Okay, got out and raced the Frankenstorm to get 3 guns through the challenge as well as shoot 2 postal match targets. Things learned: I hate shooting off a bench but I'm too fat to stay prone very long, I love a good 2 stage trigger and actually prefer it over my M700 10oz trigger, I takes me a while to get used to other guns firing at the public range when I am trying to concentrate, I have about a 250 round count before my accuracy starts slipping in my 243 before it needs cleaning, my 223 can go atleast 500rnds but needs about 20 to foul it up good after cleaning, I need to dissect my 17HMR and figure out what is up with it due to POI shifts and the fact that I hate the scope, .22 pistols are essential in prolonged centerfire range work. First up is the 243win.

Rebarreled 243 with Bartlein 1-9" twist 28" RVC barrel. B&C A2 stock bedded with Marine Tex and steel, Vortex Viper 6x-24x-50mm PST MOA SFP scope in Seekins medium rings. Rifle Basix LV-1K trigger and all metal cerakoted Coyote Tan. Atlas V-8 bipod, Eagle stock pack, Badger 0MOA rail, and Badger bolt knob. Loads are Lapua brass, 87gr. V-max, 36.5gr. of IMR 4064 and a CCI 250 primer. AVG 1.138" smallest .806", pretty dissapointing but I figure the bore needs cleaning since it never has seen one since break in. I'd love to clean the bore and shoot the challenge prone with this one, but don't see that happening until spring at the earliest.

All metal Duracoated flat black by me and trigger tuned as well as stock finished by me. Using Millet steel windage adjustable rings and a Pentax Gameseeker 4x-16x ballistic plex scope. Shooting CCI 20gr. Gamepoints. AVG 1.093" smallest .626"

Left to right top to bottom. There has been a love hate relationship with my HMR. I'm going to drop it back in the factory stock and shoot it again. I hate the scope picture I get, so I may play around with it too. This rifle use to be quite the shooter with a consistent POI before I changed stocks and scopes.
