Bottles of powder for wind testing.

Every show I see, some hunter is checking the wind with his handy dandy wind detector. I have never seen one in a store. Where do they come from, what are they called, and what is in them? Unsented talc?

it is just unscented talcum powder. Check your achery shop or a sportsmans warehouse type store. I know we carry and sell a ton at the archery shop I work at! ask for Breeze Squeeze.

Come to Wyoming, there's no doubt which direction the wind blows from. Just drop a brick and see where it lands

Hi Pack Wolf, here is what I use and been doing so for 17 years or so: Take a common nose drops plastic spray bottle that is nearly empty anyway, and spray out the rest. grip the threaded portion tightly with your thumb and index finger, and sort of unscrew and wiggle it slightly while exerting a light but firm prying out pressure, and it will come out. Turn it upside down and prop against the counter top splashguard or similar place and wait for it to dry completely. You can also dry it out nearly completely with cotton swabs. Then fill it back up about halfway with common corn starch, unscented baby powder, unscented resin, or anything light and fluffy like that, and you got yourself a super duper wind checker that was virtually free.

Good hunting at ya!

Pack Wolf, I just go to the local discount store (Dollar General. Dollar Tree, etc) and buy a very small (travel size) container of unscented baby powder and carry it along...all it takes is a small squeeze from the upright position and you will have your wind check...

For a buck, it's cheaper than the commercial stuff that they sell at the sporting goods stores....

I tried cornstarch plugged up alot, baby powder works, but sure can make a mess.

Funny trick to try is wait until your hunting buddy is down wind and give a squeeze.

Dont try this as you get older or you will be the one getting laughed at.

Get a nose drops bottle, empty it like everyone else said. Fill it with unscented talc. Buy it on eBay. A guy there sells it buy the pound cheap-compared to the stuff in the store.

I use milk weed seeds. I'm not sure you have milk weed in CO.but if you do pick the pods and let them dry. Put them in a little pouch and your good to go. FREE wind tester!!

Look for Primos Brand, it's called Windicator. I have had both, the hole the powder comes out of in the tip of the lid is bigger on the H.S. bottle and you use more powder than necessary, the Primos bottle is better. I do buy this H.S wind checker but only to refill my Primos bottle.

Corn starch, flour, climbers chalk, carpenters chalk....it all works.

I hate to go against the grain but I dont bother with the unscented stuff unless I'm hunting something with a nose that can't smell humans. If you are holding the bottle your scent will have already gotten to the deer, elk, coyote whatever. Ive read here were most dont use scent lok or sprays because a yotes nose is too good. If he can smell your powder he can smell you. I do like the travel baby powder idea though, Im going to check or dollar store next time I'm there.

Way too much trouble..... Old school trick is just kick the ground and see which way the wind blows the dust that you just kicked up, works unless the ground is wet.
