I hate to get into this, because it seems to take away from the actual loss, but since it's been brought up...
In Tennessee, there is a State mandated upper limit on the value of a pet. In other words, your pet CAN'T be worth more that $1000. No matter what happens, your max lawsuit is going to be $1000. Can you sue to recover medical bills? Absolutely. But you can't seek compensation for mental or emotional anguish. It is deemed a misdemeanor here, and that's about the best you can do with it. It isn't right, in my opinion, but that's just the way it is. Check your local/State laws before you go anywhere with this. Securing the services of an attorney to do the research would be the first step. He/she can find out if there is indeed a case, and whether it would be beneficial to file suit.
