calling coyotes with the wind ??

I know I am a freak about this, but many times I prefer to call with the wind.....many folks don't, but it has worked well for me. I just want to be able too see, and be able to shoot, clearly at least 200 - 400 yards downwind, preferably further. We usually shoot try to shoot them before they get within 150-200 yards.....

Calling downwind has become a SOP for me. Maybe not face directly downwind but need to be able to watch and shoot downwind.

I've called ND on days when you have no choice but to call with the wind. Watch the yotes body language close and be prepaired to take a long shot. Also, sit on some kind of incline. It does'nt much pay to call with the wind in really flat areas IMO.

coyotecantina,
The wind is tough, I think you have to call more often or continous if you have a E-caller. It helps if you can find some small canyon areas where the sound is funneled in.
Did you happen to take part in the NMPCA contest this weekend out of Albuquerque?

For those of you who call down wind. Are you walking down wind to your stand? Or are you walking crosswind to your stand?

Arkyyoter hit it right on the head, the problem you
have calling in to the wind is,where is the sound going,
yeah behind you,so there is more chances you have called in
dogs you didnt get to see, i have found out that MOST OF THE TIME if you call with the wind and something
shows up they are usually within shooting range, before
they get a chance to wind you
good luck to you

it's like solunar tables...if you wait for the moon to be in the waning phase and orion to be in the northern sky and the wind to be in your face as you're sneeking to your stand you'll never make a set! make the best of what you got for conditions. call with the breeze or quartering or in your face. just make the best of what you have to work with. sneak to your stand and the more sets you make the more chances you have to get one or LEARN something to do different for the next time.

I agree with dukxdog. Problem is, I live in Central Wyoming. I havent seen a full day in three weeks with less than 40 mph winds. Several days have had gusts in the mid 60's. Pretty much un-huntable or at least darn miserable to hunt. I got vacation scheduled in February. Sounds like time for a road trip.

Rezdog, I did hunt this last weekend in the NMPCA contest. We killed 2 coyotes and missed 6!! Most of the misses were on coyotes that we called with the wind and they would stop around 250-300 yards.
Did you hunt?

Sure did , my results were almost the same as yours. We called in 6 got 2 and missed two others. Got skunked in the high country on the first day going for bobcats. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif 12 sets and not an animal to be found even though we found tons of track. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif Wind was blowing pretty hard and dont know if that full moon hurt us. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Tons of fun though! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif You gettin in the next one if they have another?

Like WyoSongDog, I spend a lot of time calling on windy days. I pretty much always set up calling downwind anymore unless there is just a hint of a breeze, and even then, I make sure I have a good view of my downwind side. Just last week, I was calling across a slight breeze and had a coyote come running into the draw I was calling about 200 yards cross wind in front of me. It was coming so fast that I thought I could easily coax it in closer with my squeaker. As soon as I started squeaking, it started making a huge circle to my downwind side. Even though it had come all the way into the stand, it still circled almost all the way back out just to get to my downwind side before it started coming closer. As far as how close to let them come, I would say read the way they are acting and shoot when they start to get nervous. I have killed coyotes within 30 yards on my downwind side, but it was on a pretty windy day and I suspect the wind was breaking up my scent or carrying it over the coyote.

Rezdoggin,
You bet I'm going to hunt if they have another.I've been trying to find out if anybody else is putting one in the state.Have you heard of any?
