Like WyoSongDog, I spend a lot of time calling on windy days. I pretty much always set up calling downwind anymore unless there is just a hint of a breeze, and even then, I make sure I have a good view of my downwind side. Just last week, I was calling across a slight breeze and had a coyote come running into the draw I was calling about 200 yards cross wind in front of me. It was coming so fast that I thought I could easily coax it in closer with my squeaker. As soon as I started squeaking, it started making a huge circle to my downwind side. Even though it had come all the way into the stand, it still circled almost all the way back out just to get to my downwind side before it started coming closer. As far as how close to let them come, I would say read the way they are acting and shoot when they start to get nervous. I have killed coyotes within 30 yards on my downwind side, but it was on a pretty windy day and I suspect the wind was breaking up my scent or carrying it over the coyote.
