Camo Face Masks

The SA Fishing masks are paper thin, and much lighter than you would imagine. They offer no protection from the cold.

I personally don't like those masks for day time hunting because they constantly fall off my face any time I turn my head to look left or right.

Yes they are thin which to me is the appeal. They are also well constructed and if you cut them they have a locking stitch that does NOT run (like I did for my dogs). As far as them slipping, I have never had that happen and I use them for both calling and riding my 4wheeler in dusty conditions. No issues!
 
I like the idea of the hat combined with a net..........if the net went over the bill of the hat so it wasn't against the face. And I keep being drawn to the Leafy hoods that break up the outline of the head/body.

If you had netting or mesh hanging down from the bill of a hat it seems like it would be in the way when you try to shoot a rifle or a shotgun. If the netting or mesh is 4" from your eyes you would need a big wide hole in the netting or mesh to see out of. You don't want the mask to give you tunnel vision so that you have to move your head around to see left or right.

The thing about that leafy face mask is you are going to be seeing the leafy material flopping around in a breeze so your eyes will be picking up movement from the mask. I have a leafy suit that I like to wear in warm weather and it is not near my face and I do see the leafy material moving around in a slight breeze.

I have a hat with the camo face mask mesh material sewn to it so I can put the mask in the hat until I am ready to put the mask down. In cold weather it does make my glasses fog up but if I pull the mask down a little below my nose it does help keep my glasses from fogging up. When It is not cold enough to fog up my glasses I keep my nose covered with the mask.

I'm planning on taking a large circle of the blind material and cutting a hole in it the size of the skull part of the hat. I plan on cutting an oval out for my eyes and will reinforce that with some twisty-tie material I use to hold up my tomato plants. That should help keep it from distorting. Will also cut a hole for blowing my Swift call. I'm going to get a skein of camo yarn and cut a bunch of strings to weave into the hood at various places, hoping to add to the texture. I'm also going to make a poncho out of the burlap for my body. I'll cut some arm-holes in it. I plan on making a "scrunchy" rifle cover out of some of it. Also will cut pieces to fasten on my scope with rubber bands.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not positive this will work, but it'll be fun trying and the two items only cost me 20 bucks.

Just got tired of looking at all the various masks and hoods only to find I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. Not sure when I'll have the time to work on this project, but I'm in no hurry. Will get back posting in the thread when I get something going.

Nailed it!

I've used leafy headnet and it was hotter and movement in breeze was distracting. This hat lets you store net in hat when not in use, skirt snaps open for easy on/off and netting is attached to hat on brim adjacent to the sweat band so as not to restrict peripheral vision as much. The farther the netting from the eye, the more it will restrict vision. Net has opening which leaves eyes uncovered.

As Bob said, pulling mask down below the nose helps reduce glasses fogging, but unfortunately not completely for me due to excessive perspiration, cold OR hot weather.

Update: I just made a long "tube" of the camo blind material. Cut it into three pieces. One for the barrel, one for the front half of the scope and one for the rear half. I cut them so they were about 25% longer that the surface being covered so I could scrunch them up. I've got to find some of that camo Vet-wrap so I can tape down the loose ends. No need to send a pic yet because it's not finished, but I really think this burlap material is going to be great stuff. That rifle will be totally hidden when I get through with it...........at least from a predator's viewpoint. Can't cover every surface of the rifle with the burlap and or the Vet wrap, but think I'll be able to get enough of it covered, it'll be plenty camouflaged.

I'm stoked! After I get the rifle camo finished, I'll move on to the face mask/head covering. This is going to be a fun project.
 
Im going to suggest that you may be over doing it? If you are just starting out or just wanting to do a little calling on your property to get rid of a couple coyotes...you really do not have to go to all that trouble. But if you like to tinker thats cool, I do the same. But to get your feet wet, Id just go do some calling, stay still and maybe get in some shadow, and your going to be good as far as concealment.

Just a suggestion.

Thanks, Mark. I'm OCD. Can't do anything halfway. And I can't sit still. (wondering how I'm going to sit and wait for yotes!) Besides, I do enjoy makin' stuff. Love a project.

I'm not going to "just" be shooting from my property, though. Only have one little pack we occasionally hear at night. Maybe 4 to 6..............can't tell for sure. But I've a friend who has a ranch about an hour South of here who is running cattle and having a serious problem with the yotes. I'll get "suited up" here and practice but plan on the serious stuff at her place. Te-He...........I'll have it all to myself and the yotes have never been called on her place. So my newbie calls won't scare them, I'm hoping.

Okay, here ya go. This is my first attempt and I'm not quite sure I'm happy with it...........but if I'm sittin' in some brush, I think it'll pass for decent camouflage. I'd appreciate any critiques!

I have a Mossy Oak Turkey Thugs cap that has a camo mesh net attached to it that lays in front of the bill. I cut a small slit across the front so when I shoulder thew rifle, the scope pokes through it unimpeded. It also keeps skeeters at a distance so you don't swat at them and get busted by your intended target.
I don't have any camo on my rifle except over the stainless barrel between the hand guard and muzzle brake.

Glad to se things are working out for You Chris....Main thing is to have fun,try different things and enjoy the time You spend Outside.....and learn from Your mistakes,that helps too!

If you really want to test your efforts before hunting then take a pic and convert it to black and white or better to sepia.
I have found some camo color patterns really stand out while blaze orange camo works great in some settings.

I have used these a few times in colder weather, they actually do surprisingly well for being so thin in the cold (20 degrees give or take). What really surprised me was how well they block the wind in cold weather. I do use a fleece balaclava for under 10 degreees but for above that these work great.
I have noticed that if you bring the back of it closer to the top of you head these say pretty well since they are spandex type material.

This one wears real well with my glasses. And it's not hot to wear at all. I put my 3D leafy Booniet hat on top of it. And you can blow closed-reed calls thru it no problem.

And it looks good enough together with my RealTree Xtra Leafy suit (
