Can anyone recommend a good tripod setup?

Old pic, but just for the haters, lol!!

Pfft!… Come on Spur… AI generated pictures of coyotes next to a BOG!

Even my BBA sponsor wants to know just how low you can get? 🤣

But seriously, It’s the DG clamp that is the bulk of the weight. If you can go ARCA it’ll lose a couple lbs and you’ll never want to clamp in again.

I could do that on the SFAR with ease I’m guessing. It the bolt action that’s the main coyote gun and really don’t want to mess up the stock if I do it myself.

@Spiuchaser Truthfully, if you aren’t hiking in a ways, and only making setups pretty close to your vehicle or UTV, the extra weight probably isn’t a big deal anyway.

A bunch of my spots require a decent hike in. Having my rifle locked in the head with ARCA gives me some peace of mind. I just throw it over my shoulder and go. I wouldn’t trust a clamp in that situation.

As open as our area is, even though I can’t see through it, I park at minimum 300+ yards away. That may not seem that far, but carrying tripod, rifle, and caller plus a scanner and remote around my neck, any weight I can shed I’m all for, lol!

With hogs, the trigger stick tripod works fine because I’m walking in with rifle and tripod only and shooting once I get there.

Gotcha. I thought you were In tighter than that. Not sure what your main coyote rifle is or the stock material, but I think I would throw a plate on that thing if possible. I know some of the cheaper flexier synthetic stocks can be challenging to mount a plate to.

Sharing your knowledge is a better way to approach a forum filled with serious and seasoned hunters who walk the walk.
I expected much more resilience from a fellow NY'er and a member of the 10th Mtn.
Be safe and good luck hunting.

P.S. - I still prefer hunting using my Gen 3 Trigger stick's with Hog or Pig Saddle's and trust them with full confidence to hold my Custom rifles with $8,000+ thermal scopes.

Resilience, Im back😂

I don't put my rifle on a tripod very often. Just very occasionally for sniping rock chucks. When I do, I'm using a tripod I bought many years ago for long lens photography. This is a low budget option for that application. Better ones are much more expensive. It works decently with a long camera lens and very well with a rifle though. Just using a 70mm ballhead and I forget exactly which generic clamp, a Hog Saddle or something like that
I wasn't looking for a tripod and was just reading the replies with the intent of lurking until I read what DAA posted... huh
I have a tripod now (collecting dust) I'm curious how does one mount the rifle clamp part to a regular camera tripod?
(I think I know how just making sure)
Forgive my ignorance on the matter.

There are a number of different ways to get it done. All I'm doing, is screwing an Arca plate to the bottom of the clamp. The Arca plate mounts to the 70mm ball head exactly as a camera or camera lens would.

This is the ballhead I have on my tripod. Bought it long ago for long lens photography. It's probably a bit overkill for a rifle. The tripod I have it on is probably a bit overkill for a rifle too. From what I've seen in this thread, most are using much lighter duty stuff.

Depending how tall it is,

No. It should be avoided period. It's less stable. Period. Because physics. How much less stable depends on how tall, but any raising of the center column will be less stable. End of story. It's not a matter of opinion. It's fact. Field test it and report back.

Ok, @DAA
The tripod I have is a Bogden (made by Manfrotto) 3211 Tripod, just now dug it out looking at the head it appears to be #3130 head.

If my google is good for that tripod a 486RC2 ball head which is the direct install, looking at the specs same 3/8 thread as the mount you posted. The one I'm referencing from Manfrotto looks to be a 13 weight limit vs the Feisol CB-70D at 84 Lbs that you are posting. Yes Sir that helps a lot. And it appears that the one you linked to will bolt up to the tripod I have on hand.

The current head on the tripod is here :
3130 Fluid head

again the limit seems to be at about 13 Lbs, 8.8 lbs ( I seen the replacement part has a bit higher rating) which the existing head looks to be able to bolt to either Pig Saddle or the Bog death grip head via 1/4-20 adapter plate.
Which at 8.8 Lbs rating yeah light weight rimfire / centerfire (i.e. 10ish lb AR-15) at best from my limited knowledge. or am I mistaken / wrong

What you posted and my current tripod has the same ability for the sitting position for varminting or at least it appears to be.

I think I would prefer that method (sitting) as it would provide the most stable platform. Your post is crystal clear, got it as for the principal.
The link you provided is very helpful, and made sense once I looked at the components. I'll resort back to lurking.
Thanks everyone
