Hey Folks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif,
Just thought I would share a few pics from an interresting call we had the other day. We have called in this area a few times before, but because of high grass we usually just pass it up to try and find more suitable filming grounds. Well the lack of rain and grazing cattle gave the spot a nice little makeover so we decided to give it a shot. It was late morning (11 or so) with a light wind blowing away from were we figured we would get a response. We sat below a small bush that provided great shade and an awesome veiw of the field. We sat the FX3 and predator supreme decoy out about 30 yards and settled in. There were 2 two tracks that made a big plus sign in the field so I set the decoy and call right in the intersectoin to try and give any incoming predator a good look. We started off with the Jack distress at low volume for a few minutes when Jeff motioned we had one coming. It took me a minute to pick him up but I finally had a visual when he cleared the tall grass about 100 yards across the field.
He seemed intent, but was on a very slow pace coming in. He checked up about 75 yards and just kinka looked around like he was just wondering by. We were conceiled very well and he was directly upwind so we were confident he wouldnt bust us. He stopped for several seconds, but seemed very relaxed and comfortable so we just watched him to see what he would do. All of the sudden he catches movement to his left and bounds twords it.
He moused for a few seconds then turned in circle trying to find that little sucker. He then stopped and look around in all directions. He took a few steps to our left and stopped looking in that direction for a few moments then just stood there looking around. Keep in mind the foxpro is still playing and the decoy is having a fit within 50 yards of this coyote and he doesnt even act like it is there. Finally he turns twords us again and slowly but confidently walks in to take a look. He gets to within 25 yards of the call and decoy and FINALLY makes a visual.
He acts almost spooked as his body shifts back a few inches like he wanted to turn and run but he never untracked. We let him stand for a few more seconds, but I could take it no more and took him were he stood at about 40 yards.
He was a mature male weighing about 40 pounds. He never acted submisive or nervous like he was a transient somewhere that he shouldnt be, but very relaxed the whole time. We found this call to be interresting and figured you guys would enjoy it also.
The whole scenario played out in just a minute or two but it might have well been 20 the way he was acting. Kinda, Yeah I hear ya, Im coming just give me a minute. Getting them close is addictive and really pads your hit to miss ratio if ya know what I mean. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
Take care,
Todd
