Carefree coyote (pics)

Hey Folks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif,

Just thought I would share a few pics from an interresting call we had the other day. We have called in this area a few times before, but because of high grass we usually just pass it up to try and find more suitable filming grounds. Well the lack of rain and grazing cattle gave the spot a nice little makeover so we decided to give it a shot. It was late morning (11 or so) with a light wind blowing away from were we figured we would get a response. We sat below a small bush that provided great shade and an awesome veiw of the field. We sat the FX3 and predator supreme decoy out about 30 yards and settled in. There were 2 two tracks that made a big plus sign in the field so I set the decoy and call right in the intersectoin to try and give any incoming predator a good look. We started off with the Jack distress at low volume for a few minutes when Jeff motioned we had one coming. It took me a minute to pick him up but I finally had a visual when he cleared the tall grass about 100 yards across the field.

He seemed intent, but was on a very slow pace coming in. He checked up about 75 yards and just kinka looked around like he was just wondering by. We were conceiled very well and he was directly upwind so we were confident he wouldnt bust us. He stopped for several seconds, but seemed very relaxed and comfortable so we just watched him to see what he would do. All of the sudden he catches movement to his left and bounds twords it.
moncrief.jpg

He moused for a few seconds then turned in circle trying to find that little sucker. He then stopped and look around in all directions. He took a few steps to our left and stopped looking in that direction for a few moments then just stood there looking around. Keep in mind the foxpro is still playing and the decoy is having a fit within 50 yards of this coyote and he doesnt even act like it is there. Finally he turns twords us again and slowly but confidently walks in to take a look. He gets to within 25 yards of the call and decoy and FINALLY makes a visual.
moncrief3.jpg

He acts almost spooked as his body shifts back a few inches like he wanted to turn and run but he never untracked. We let him stand for a few more seconds, but I could take it no more and took him were he stood at about 40 yards.

He was a mature male weighing about 40 pounds. He never acted submisive or nervous like he was a transient somewhere that he shouldnt be, but very relaxed the whole time. We found this call to be interresting and figured you guys would enjoy it also.

The whole scenario played out in just a minute or two but it might have well been 20 the way he was acting. Kinda, Yeah I hear ya, Im coming just give me a minute. Getting them close is addictive and really pads your hit to miss ratio if ya know what I mean. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Take care,

Todd

Beautiful!! pics...and an excellent job of replaying it all for us Todd.
You keep this up and we'll all already have the next video....Doh! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif why'd I say that?

that's cool todd! you know I've had yotes run from every decoy I've used so far except the wood pecker! I've even had them run from a feather flex turkey! of course on that place I watched 2 turkeys chase a coyote clean out of the country once! that has to be one confused coyote!
again awesome pics!

IN sdb, Thanks we are glad you enjoyed it.

River Runner, We love pics just as much as anyone else, so we try and show the ones that work out well for stills and have a decent story to go along with em. We dont show them all, I would be a busy guy if we did.

Glenn, We have used just about everything out there and they will all spook them at some point, But the positives outway the negatives. We have found if they dont see it until they are close (30 yards or so) they are alot more likely to spook. Kind of a shock factor I think. If they peg them from 100 yards or further it gives them time to think about it and be more comfortable, not to mention curious. The same way with hitting animals with a light when night hunting. If you get on them way out it never seems to bother them, but if you dont hit em until they are right on ya they will be alot more likely to get buggered. Thats why we like open fields so much, it really gives the decoy a chance to work like it is supposed to. In tight cover a slow moving, non intimidating decoy like the supreme extreme really comes in handy. Seems to work alot better than the fast movers in the thicker areas. They dont get that shock factor of something is moving fast so I better. They tend to sneak in more that way.

Noel, I am sure you will contribute to a few in the near future. If not then the blooper section will be great. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Is your gun loaded? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Take care,

Todd

Very nice.

I have a question for the more experience ones here (all of you seem more than me, or a least better at it) How do you keep from ruining the setup when placing your call/decoy.

I went out Sun AM and found what looked like a promising spot. When I got about 15ft from where I wanted to sit I saw a silver streak running away, BUSTED! Any help appreciated.

Todd,

That looks like the same place that Glenn and I hunt sometimes. Come to think about it, that looks like the same coyote we called in there about a month ago. Glenn shot right over his head at point blank range. My theory is that the coyote is deaf and may have powder burns on his eyes. This would explain why he paid no attention to the call and decoy. If you boys don't stay out of our hunting areas we may just have to start jerking some valve stems. You got it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All in good fun.

Another theory, and one that I've been working on is that the moon may have been upside down or maybe even backwards that day. My data is not complete but I think I see a pattern. Did you happen to see where Haleys comet was that day?

Another theory is that maybe he just wasn't that worried about another coyote getting the rabbit, wasn't in a hurry, and wasn't hungry. Not all coyotes are created equal.

Thanks for the pictures /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif.

Now byron, you know I never miss! have been known to pull a valve stem though!
PS todd, the 300 yard cat place is now a housing addition! NO KIDDING! it bites!

Dang most of our good spots are getting houses on them! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Sorry about hunting your spots Byron, but we had to get to them before Glenn shoots and scares them all away! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Jk. That does look alot like Decatur, but I promise that its not! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Handirifle, We really dont have any set rules as to how we set out a decoy. Just try and be stealthy and make NO NOISE. Wish I had better info for ya.

Hey Byron, We picked up that land from a girl who hit on me the other day. That Jessica Simpson just wont leave me alone! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Glenn, Housing development! You think you would get control of that, being the Mayor and all. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Glad you liked the pics everyone. We are heading West this morning and will check in when we get back. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Take care,

Todd

Todd,

I know what you you mean about those crazy wemenz. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif ADVISE!!! don't let Shenia Twain have your number /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. I like to have never got her to quit calling. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Good luck out West. As they say in show bizness "break a leg". Not literaly you understand. Be safe and let Jeff get some shooting in.
