I have a few Nikon Monarchs and Bushnell 4200's but looking for a cheap prairie dog scope. I would like to spend less than $200 bucks. Any recommendations on a quality scoope. It is going to be mounted on an AR .223 so recoil isn't an issue.

No personal experience but the word is that Vortex is a pretty good deal for a lower priced scope. (I don't use the c word when referring to scopes)

Swfa is having a sale on vortex crossfires 6-24x. The reviews and price are good enough that I decided to try to one.

I have three Nikon ProStaffs on some of my rifles.. Excellent value for the money.. I usually see them for ~$160 w/the BDC reticle..

You will spend twice that before you get any relief. There probably isnt anything wrong with your eyes besides needing a new prescription if you wear glasses or contacts. Really it boils down to cheap glass.

You have some excellent scopes now, seems to me like a lesser scope is going to make you unhappy sooner or later. My PD trips are >4000 miles round trip- so getting there and staying are my biggest expense. I have a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18X, NikoPlex, on my RR AR Varmint EOP - PD's FEAR me, LOL.

IMHO, you will spend more money by far on gas than the cost of a good scope over it's lifetime than the bargain..of course, you don't have to drive quite as far but still would betcha.

I got some 4-16X52 30mm scopes (and 1 6-24X) with side adjustable AO and the turrets that let you dial in for windage and elevation plus a lighted center dot in the crosshairs for $150 shipped. These scopes are built like a tank and definately would be tactical grade for a AR! Great japanese glass with over 90% light transmission. Almost forgot they have flip up lense covers and come with 30mm rings too.

+1 for a mildot scope. Sitting on a pdog town you quickly learn distances and windage. One should still practice "doping" your scope, but if you really want to motor through the town, using the mils is the way to go IMO. Like i said you'll quickly learn the holdovers, or unders, and windage making going from one dog to the next very fast without much error.

Drop into WallysWorld in sporting goods, they have usually 10 or so that will do the job you want it for. If you decide you dont want it later, take it back.

Walmart does have a fantastic rental program..

I would recommend Mueller Optics as well. They come with a lot of nice features for the price.
