CO Night Vision petition....UPDATED 2/25

New member
Not sure where to post this, but since its about a NV hunting petition this is good.
My pal(not a member here) is the one getting this started in CO. I said Id push it where I can to get it totally legalized for everyone who wants to hunt at night in CO with no restrictions.

The ball is rolling for NV and Thermal in Colorado.
I have decided to take on a venture, this petition is the starting point to legalize the use of Night Vision and Thermal imaging in the state of Colorado.

Currently Colorado allows the use of Artificial Light on Private property along with Public property. Public property is legal when you have a permit from the National Forest Service and approval from the Division of Wildlife officer in the area you are hunting. Your chances are slim to none during Big Game season on Public.

Night Vision and Thermal Imaging is legal as long as you follow certain criteria such as:
1. It must be a damage control situation meaning harm to Livestock and / or crop
2. You must be an agent of the land or the landowner of said land
3. You must provide proof of damage

I am doing a petition drive to allow the use of Night Vision and Thermal Imaging under the same statue as the use of Artificial Light.
I have submitted my request to the Colorado DOW, next step will be signatures and then a meeting in Grand Junction to speak about my request.
Probably a year away to become legal but I need/want to start somewhere.
Will you sign the Petition when its posted?
Thank you fellow PM members.

I too posted this for a Friend & fellow Predator Hunter.

Phil,

I think he is looking for any and all Day or Night Predator Hunters, he wants to show a value to having this "Petition" at least heard and passed by the Colorado DOW committee.

He told me that anything we can do to show increased revenue for the state and an actual following of Night Hunters that want to go from Artificial Light to NV and Thermal.

I hunt at night mostly in Nebraska because I now have all the toys such as Thermal and NV. I also have a Wicked 400, XLR250 in Red and a new Laser Genetics ND3x50. These lights just seem so primitive at night once you have used NV and Thermal..

I just don't understand why Colorado would allow Artificial light and not the use of NV & Thermal.

As you well know you can identify critters at some CRAZY distances with your Thermal and Gen 3NV. With an light regardless of how powerful you will not ID a critter as far as you can with the use of Thermal and NV.

I wish him luck on his quest,(I am all for legal hunting) sounds like a Looooong process so please sign away.

Not yet, waiting for my ol pal to send a copy to me. I posted this up for him since he lives in CO & is not a member here, but is working on getting this through.

If my signature would help you I'm all for it. I did a recent drive last year to extend the night season in IL by 8 weeks (4 on the front and 4 on the back). It was initially blown off by DNR officials two years ago when I first requested it. The second year I got some petitions going and ended up with around 50 (which was less than my goal of 100). Despite the lower number DNR did extend the season by 4 weeks on the back side so not all was lost. Kevin

OK sounds good will be waiting to hear from you.

This is the Colorado Night vision/thermal petition. If any of you all have something that can be added/removed/revised post up & I will pass it on.

-PROPOSED ISSUE PAPER Date: February 24, 2014 ISSUE: Revision of Colorado Statute C.R.S. 33-6-127 (2013) DISCUSSION (FACTS AND FIGURES, EXPLANATION OF ISSUE): As an avid outdoorsmen and lifelong hunter I would like to see the use of Night Vision and Thermal Imaging expanded to the use of not only “Damage Control” for landowners and their agents the use of said equipment for the taking of Small Game during the night. As an avid, responsible Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and Arizona hunter I would like to hunt Predators at night without the use of a spotlight. Night Vision and Thermal Imaging has advanced in technology beyond any light on the market in the 21st century. With that being said most predators become light shy and the use of a spotlight is detrimental for the taking of predators.

WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN THIS ISSUE? HAVE YOU COMMUNICATED WITH ANY OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES? WHAT INPUT HAVE YOU RECEIVED? I have reviewed this petition with many Predator hunters nationwide, as well as many of Colorado’s citizens. Yes they are interested in this issue as are the many day & night hunters of Colorado and most likely hunters from surrounding states. Currently I day hunt 100+ ranches in Colorado, all ranchers are in favor of such a revision to the existing statute allowing the use of Nigh Vision and Thermal Imaging equipment for the taking of predators. Other parties interested would be the companies that sell this type of equipment. I also hunt Nebraska with the use of Night Vision and Thermal Imaging along with my hunting partner that resides in Wyoming. The use of Night Vision and Thermal Imaging is legal in the state of Nebraska. Currently we pay $81.00 each for a Non Resident Small Game License to hunt in their state. I live in Lakewood Colorado and it is a 2 ½ hour drive to reach my first destination in Nebraska. I spend money in Nebraska to hunt at night; this is monies that should be spent in Colorado for Colorado. I belong to 3 different Predator hunting websites, all of the sites have “Night Calling” threads and all members on these sites are in favor of the revision and many would possibly travel to Colorado for future hunting.
ALTERNATIVES: PLEASE INDICATE THE PROBABLE OUTCOME IF THIS PETITION IS ACCEPTED, AS WELL AS THE IMPACT OF ALTERNATIVES TO THIS PETITION: If this petition is accepted I think it will benefit the many ranches if Colorado, it will also benefit the Colorado Division of Wildlife’s relationship with the many ranches we hunt for predators that are depredating on their livestock and farm pets. I have spoken with ranchers that want me to hunt their property because the Coyotes are coming to close to their house; the coyotes are taking their kittens and cats. I tell them that I am looking into having the statute revised so that I can hunt with my Night Vision and Thermal Imaging at any time on Private Property without being assigned as an “Agent or Employee” of their land.
Spotlighting is prehistoric when it comes to night hunting and the use of Night Vision and Thermal Imaging is light years ahead of a “Spotlight”
PETITION PROPOSED BY:

DATE SENT TO THE COMMISSION: February 25th, 2014

5spd,

When I did my petition in IL I got the email addresses of the individuals involved with making those decisions and set it up in such a way that the petitioner just coppied and pasted the petition into an email and sent it in with a copy to me so I could keep track of how many went out. It seemed to work ok......they did extend the season by about 4 weeks. Here is the post I used to get the ball rolling on the petition: http://www.predatormastersforums.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2312188

I can send you the letter referred to in the petition if you want it, however, states are different as to the content of requests such as this. Kevin
