COLUMBINE STUDENT'S FATHER 12 YEARS LATER!!

I am glad he understands who's to blame.

Guess our national leaders didn't expect this. On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful.

They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness.. The following is a portion of the transcript:

"Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers.

"The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used.. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart.

"In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA - because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent

I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy -- it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best.

Your laws ignore our deepest needs,
Your words are empty air.
You've stripped away our heritage,
You've outlawed simple prayer.
Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
And precious children die.
You seek for answers everywhere,
And ask the question "Why?"
You regulate restrictive laws,
Through legislative creed.
And yet you fail to understand,
That God is what we need!

"Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, mind, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc. Spiritual presences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs -- politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts.

"As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, he did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America , and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA -- I give to you a sincere challenge.. Dare to examine your own heart before casting the first stone!
My daughter's death will not be in vain! The young people of this country will not allow that to happen!"
- Darrell Scott

The problem Is that neither Mr. Scott's comments nor the T-shirt slogan represent reality. The is much more religion in public schools today than in 1965 (post Abington v. Schemp).

It appears you appear to live in a warped reality. If you can read the original post and make a statement like that, though, no amount of reason will change your mind.

Religion may be taught in school, but most likely it has to include all religions.. Muslim religion etc.. I doubt that they can teach just Chrisitanity, which is what Our Country was founded on? I mean even Athiests need to have their say. lol

When I was in the fourth grade the early 1960s, every school day started with the lord's prayer. That was the beginning and the end of religion in our school day. When I got to junior high abington has banished school led prayer and that trend continued for my entire education. Strangely, despite the absence of religious instruction or indoctrination school shootings were conspicuous by their absence. When my kids graduated in the 2000s there were no fewer than 6 religiously inspired organizations using the facilities of their high schools. A fair number of students participated and the school were and still are required to give them the same access to funding and facilities as every other school club or group.

I think religion or its role in our schools plays a very small role in what we're seeing. What I do think may be related is the glorification of violence that has come to permeate our society. It floods the theaters, the television, and our foreign policy. And, as much pain as it causes us, I think we have to face the fact that none of the recent mass murderers could have done what they did with a knife, or a pencil, or a spoon. We can protest all we like, but that dog just will not hunt - ever.

And that from klr is a large part of the problem. So many can be hit right in the face with a shovel and can't ever figure out what happened.

The problem is, not everyone participated in the 6 clubs or organizations. When you said prayer every morning, everyone did. On top of that pretty much ALL of our mothers insisted on having us spend a week or so a year in bible school, learning the teachings of the bible, and all of us were made to attend church on a real regular basis. Whether you came away from that a devout christian or whether you simply learned a set of wholesome societal values, you did learn the difference between right and wrong.

And, you need to do your homework. The two worst mass school killings were effected without the use of a gun. In both cases the children were herded into a corner of the classroom with machete in one case, and with a machete and lance in the other case. The latter they used a flame thrower, the former they poured 5 gallons of gas in the room and lit it off. Gee... I wonder how hard it is to get gas!!

Before you even remotely start on High Capacity, Semi-Automatic Weapons being the ultimate weapon for these psycho-paths...

Colt 1911 was patented in 1911.
Browning Automatic Rifle was patented in 1918.
The Thompson Sub-Machine Gun was patented in 1919, with the drum magazine.

Mass school killings didn't become commonplace for another 8 - 9 decades!

Find another excuse; it is not the guns fault.

First, thanks to Shootist for a well reasoned argument.

As to the role of religion it's a red herring. As I noted, formal participation in some sort of religious activity nominally disappeared in 1963/64. Mass shootings in schools, as you correctly point out, are a relatively new thing. I wonder. How does saying the lord's prayer to open a school day make me a better, less violent person? Go take a look at the literature on interpersonal violence. How many perpetrators are atheists? How many profess to be religious? Feel free to standardize the numbers. Religion doesn't make you or me better. The lack of it doesn't make us worse. What the focus in religion does do is distract us from our more serious social problems.

A growing part of the problem is, I think, a ramping up of our propensities to respond violently to perceived injustices. We have role models aplenty. That's by no means the whole story. However, we need to take a close, hard look at our society - not from a religious but from a humanistic perspective.

Did I say it was the gun's fault? Nope. Never said any such thing. I am a 5 decade shooter - about as far from an "anti" as you're going to find. What I did say is that we have to face some uncomfortable facts. Guns are tools. They are, however, tools designed and intended to make it easier to kill something. As such, they are quite effective. This makes them unlike most, if not all, the objects we like to trot out as potential substitute weapons. In the right hands they are as benign as a hammer, a pencil, a spoon, or screwdriver. Placed in the wrong hands, however, they render the person holding them capable of inflicting incredible damage in a very short period of time. The more bullets that person can fire, the more damage they can inflict. I hunt with a rifle (or sometimes a handgun), not a knife or machette or can of gas. I do so for the precise reasons I stated above.

Arm the attackers in any of the mass public shootings in the United States over the last 20 years with a knife, a machette, or a can of gas and help me understand and explain to someone who has no idea about guns, how the gun didn't make it much easier to do the awful things they did. Try to make the argument. I'll try to dismantle it. Not because I don't like guns, but because we really need to understand what we're up against.

Add the firepower that a modern AR/AK class weapon can provide to a more general acceptance of using force to right personal wrongs and you have a bad combination.

The antis know guns don't kill. They also know it's people who do. I really don't think making that simple minded argument will get us very far with most of them. What they do know is what I said earlier, guns - particularly those with high cyclic fire rates and large magazines - make it significantly easier for bad people to kill other people, lots of other people.

I know this is not a popular position. Given my experience in this and other similar venues, I don't expect much of a hospitable reception. That's fine. I do hope that one or two folks on here, who are still somewhat open minded will try to think more rationally about what we (both as gun owners and citizens of the nation) are up against. We really are all in this together - all of us - antis and shooters alike.

Did you read Rockys post?If you did you did not get it.Read it again and see if you can understand what he is telling you.I am sorry but you are just on the surface of this situation.Try to look into the depth of what he is saying.Think about it.

Just read an interesting article in the paper. An interview with staff for a school in Texas that has all the gee-whiz gadgetry to be employed during a situation like Conn., ETC. The principal said that even with all those deterants, there was no gurantee for the kids safety. Ergo, a meeting with the school board to discuss and implement CCW permits and teachers, staff 'packing'. There was SOME vehement dissenscion from a couple board members and the rest signed up. Some staff and teachers now LEGALLY carry in the school. The principal also stated that other schools were doing the same thing. The principal also stated that he/she now felt 'comfortable' that they were prepared in all areas if something were to happen. At least limit the damage!!!

Bring it on coward, sh!t heads; die quicker and no glory!!!

% stars for Texas!!!!

In point of fact I did read it. I simply disagree with his basic premise with respect to the role of religion in morality and to his reasoning with respect to our problems as gun owners.

What do you think?

I think almost exactly or even maybe exactly what Rocky said.I don't know how to say it any better.Tools can be used many ways, other tools man has could be used for evil and cause more horrible damage than any yet seen.I don't want to see these acts become a competition for crazy people to see who can do the most damage. As long as we have people taking the conversation to half measures such as gun control we are not dealing with the real problem and this stuff will continue.Capacity of a gun is a shallow point. As I said,I don't want to start naming ways to kill, but normal everyday items can be made into mass weapons, doing more horrible damage. The real problem is structure, prayer led by the teacher who believes what they are saying.God talked about and respected at home.If a child is not taught to respect God,who will they respect, and who will their children respect? The groups you speak of are good, but we need to get back to the structure of a Christian society being taught to the children by adults who are leading in the Christian way of values and living a life that is a good example for children to follow. It needs to start at home, but in some cases if it comes from the teacher at school that's better than none.I think you need to think of generations and the decline of values over generations. For a stop gap to help right now, arming and training a few of the adults at schools would help, but only bringing back respect for God and each other is the answer. This would bring help for people who have mental problems through a more caring society. This stuff goes deep into society and did not spring up one day when someone invented a 13 round mag.

King James Version

1And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee, 2And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul; 3That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee. 4If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee: 5And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.

6And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live. 7And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, which persecuted thee. 8And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day. 9And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers: 10If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.

11For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. 12It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 13Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 14But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.

15See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; 16In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. 17But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; 18I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it. 19I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: 20That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

God's Word to Israel also applies to our country. From our country's inception we have been blessed by God. Our forefathers founded our country on religious freedom, but not on Islamic principles. They wanted to be founded on the work of Christ on the Cross, as God's plan of redemption. George Washington was no Muslim, but a Christian, saved by faith in Christ. Here is an account of a vision he had-- If one's Bible is Snopes, they will pooh pooh this also. There are countless factual accounts of both General Washington and most of our early leaders having a strong and unshakeable faith in God.

Look and Learn

~ A Vision of George Washington ~

"The Birth, the progress and the destiny of the United States"

The father of our country, George Washington, was a man of prayer. Many of us have read of how he went to the thicket many times to pray during the winter his army was at Valley Forge. However, little publicity has been give to the vision and prophecy he received at that time.

The account of this vision was given in 1859 by an old soldier. He gave it to a writer, Wesley Bradshaw, who published it. In the vision God revealed to George Washington that three great perils would come upon the republic. He was given to know that America was going through the first peril at that time. The old soldier who told the story of the vision said the nation would soon see the account verified by the second peril descending upon the land.

We give the account here as printed in the U.S. war veterans paper The National Tribune, in December 1880. The National Tribune became, "The Stars and Stripes", and this article was later reprinted in that publication.

I do not know whether it is owing to the anxiety of my mind, or what, but this afternoon, as I was sitting at this table engaging in preparing a dispatch, something in the apartment seemed to disturb me. Looking up, I beheld standing opposite to me a singularly beautiful being. So astonished was I, for I had given strict orders not to be disturbed that it was some moments before I found language to inquire the cause of the visit. A second, a third, and even a fourth time did I repeat my question, but received no answer from my mysterious visitor except a slight raising of the eyes.

By this time I felt strange sensations spreading through me. I would have risen but the riveted gaze of the being before me rendered volition impossible. I tried once more to speak, but my tongue became useless, as if paralyzed. A new influence, mysterious, potent, irresistible, took possession of me. All I could do was to gaze steadily, vacantly at my unknown visitor.

Gradually the surrounding atmosphere seemed to fill with sensations, and grew luminous. Everything about me seemed to rarefy, the mysterious visitor also becoming more airy and yet more distinct to my sight than before. I began to feel as one dying, or rather to experience the sensations I sometimes imagine accompanying death. I did not think, I did not reason, I did not move. All were alike impossible. I was only conscious of gazing fixedly, vacantly on my companion.

Presently I heard a voice say,

"Son of the Republic, look and learn,"

while at the same time my visitor extended an arm eastward. I now beheld a heavy white vapor at some distance rising fold upon fold. This gradually dissipated, and I looked upon the strange scene. Before me lay, out in one vast plain all the countries of the world -- Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. I saw rolling and tossing between Europe and America lay billows of the Atlantic, and between Asia and America lay the Pacific.

"Son of the Republic", said the same mysterious voice as before,

"Look and learn."

At that moment I beheld a dark shadowy being, like an angel, standing, or rather floating in mid-air, between Europe and America. Dipping water out of the ocean in the hollow of each hand, he sprinkled some upon America with his right hand, while with his left he cast some over Europe. Immediately a cloud arose from these countries and joined in mid-ocean. For awhile it remained stationary, and then it moved slowly westward, until it enveloped America in its murky folds. Sharp flashed of lightning gleamed through at intervals, and I heard the smothered groans and cries of the American People.

A second time the angel dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it out as before. The dark cloud drew back to the ocean, in whose heaving billows it sank from view.

A third time I heard the mysterious voice saying,

"Son of the Republic, look and learn."

I cast my eyes upon America and beheld villages and town and cities spring up one right after another until the whole land from the Atlantic to the Pacific was dotted with them. Again, I heard the mysterious voice say,

"Son of the Republic, the end of the century cometh, look and learn."

And this time a dark shadowy angel turned his face southward. From Africa I saw an ill omened spectra approach our land. It flitted slowly and heavily over every town and city of the latter. The inhabitants presently set themselves in battle array against each other. As I continued look I saw a bright angel on whose brow was traced the word 'Union.' He was bearing the American flag. He placed the flag between the divided nation and said,

"Remember, ye are brethren. "

Instantly the inhabitants, casting down their weapons became friends once more, and united around the National Standard.

Again I heard a mysterious voice saying,

"Son of the Republic, look and learn."

At this the dark, shadowy angel placed a trumpet to his mouth, and blew three distinct blasts; and taking water from the ocean, he sprinkled it upon Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Then my eyes beheld a fearful scene. From each of these continents arose thick black clouds that were soon joined into one. And throughout this mass there gleamed a dark red light by which I saw hordes of armed men. These men, moving with the cloud marched by land and sailed by sea to America, which country was enveloped in the volume of the cloud. And I dimly saw these vast armies devastate the whole country and burn the villages, towns and cities, which I had seen spring up.

As my ears listened to the thundering of the cannon, clashing of swords, and the shouts and cries of millions in mortal combat, I again heard the mysterious voice saying,

"Son of the Republic, look and learn."

When the voice had ceased, the dark shadowy angel placed his trumpet once more to his mouth, and blew a long and fearful blast. Instantly a light, as of a thousand suns shone down from above me, and pierced and broke into fragments of the dark cloud, which enveloped America. At the same moment the angel upon whose head still shown the word 'Union,' and who bore our national flag in one hand and a sword in the other, descended from the heavens attended by legions of white spirits. These immediately joined the inhabitants of America, who I perceived were well-nigh over come, but who immediately taking courage again, closed up their broken ranks, and renewed battle.

Again amid the fearful voice of the conflict I heard the mysterious voice say,

"Son of the Republic, look and learn."

As the voice ceased, the shadowy angel for the last time dipped the water from the ocean and sprinkled it upon America. Instantly the dark clouds rolled back, together with the armies it had brought, leaving the inhabitants of the land victorious.

Then once more I beheld the villages, towns and cities springing up where I had seem them before, while the bright angel, planting the azure standard cried with a loud voice:

"While the stars remain, and the heavens send down dew upon the earth, so long shall the Union last."

And taking from his brow the crown, which blazoned the word 'Union,' he placed it down upon the standard while the people, kneeling down said, 'Amen.'

The scene instantly began to fade and dissolve, and I at last saw nothing but the rising, curling vapor, I at first beheld. This also disappeared, and I found myself once more gazing upon the mysterious visitor who, in the same voice I heard before said,

"Son of the Republic, what you have seen is thus interpreted: Three great perils will come upon the Republic. The most fearful for her is the third. But the whole world united shall not prevail against her. Let every child of the Republic learn to live for his God, his land and Union."

With these words the vision vanished, and I started from my seat and felt that I had seen a vision wherein had been showed me the birth, progress, and destiny of the United States."
