Correct Terminology

I think it is a bunch of hogwash. We all speak differently and pronounce words differently. To say someone doesn't speak a word the exact way you believe it should be said doesn't mean that they don't know what they are doing. Where I come form the majority of people say horns when speaking of deer. They know the diff between the two words its just the way we talk. Just becuase you speak a word one way in a different part of the country doesn't mean someone else has to speak it the same way. Kind of sound like bunch of whiney snobs.

What really peaves me is when folks judge your intelligence by your accent.
Y'all wouldn't believe the grief I catch for my "Hillbilly" accent when I get around folks that speak "properly".

Some of them are so dumb they wouldn't know big wood from kindlin'.

Quote:I have seen a lot of hunting shows lately with archery hunts refering to the record book for them as Boone and Crockett. Unless I am wrong (Wouldnt be the first time), I believe it is Pope and Young for archery.

Actually Boone & Crockett applies to any deer whether killed by archery, rifle, shotgun muzzleloader as long as it meets the club minimum.

Pope & Young only recognizes those deer that have been killed using archery.

So an archery kill could actually be entered into both clubs if it was big enough.

It is easy to fall into using a particular vernacular such such as "horns" verses antlers.

I have even caught myself saying it before. Have you ever called anything other than a Coke, a "coke"?

Do you know how many times I have seen people spell "whether" as "weather"?

I find the people from east of the Mississippi say "ki-yot-ee" more than people west of it.

How many of you have said or heard it called "prostrate" cancer? It is "prostate". "Prostrate" is a position not an organ.

Why to they call it a "deer stand"? I am rarely standing when on my "deer stand". I guess it should be called a "deer sitting".

How many of you get all camoed up to go sit in a box blind?

How many of you say "pin" oak? Or "pin oak flat"? They usually are not pin oaks at all, they are usually water or willow oaks.

Can any of you truthfully say you have never said "hot water heater"? Why would you need something to heat hot water?

I would be willing to bet that the person who thinks less of someone because of how they pronounce or use a word has pronounced or used a work improperly themselves. Somebody probably heard it an thought you were dunce too. Some of them might even have been some listed above.

I don't worry about it too much, and I'm sure I have miss pronounced or used the wrong word plenty myself.

let me see the peyote i'll tell you later if it is or not lol

Deer "horns" just slang nothing more.

What about that cartoon yote ? I not sure how it's spelled. I know it is said with a"tee"

Yeah no harm done to anyone, just thinking these professionals on TV should atleast use correct terms when taping and it wouldn't make them look like they didn't know what they were talking about. Whats being said and what is known is 2 different things altogether.

Yep, it's pretty funny to hear Rob Keck, the BIG man of the NWTF, on national TV talking about a set of whitetail sheds having big "pedestals".
laugh.gif

its alway been this way on TV
remember the lamb that always yelled "its the wolif, its the wolif" you would think after 20 years of that cartoon he would have learned to pronounce it right.
wolifs were much dumber in those days i alway knew it was the sheep dog in sheeps clothing and the wolif needed a better talor.
then the coyote should have been educated about anything that said acme on it
see coyotes do have long term memory when was the last time you saw one with rockit powered roller skates?

All right. Time for me to get on the soapbox. The thing that bothers me about the hunting shows is the use of the work "kill". It might be just the area I was raised in, but I never "killed" anything. We always "shot" something or "got" something. I can never remembered being asked if I "killed" anything. I was always asked if I "got" something or "shot" something. When these guys on these videos say "let's go kill some coyotes" I just cringe and hope there are no non-hunters watching. It is a question of semantics because when I shoot something I kill it. However, it is easier on the ears if I shoot it. I have always wondered about this because I grew up in a hunting community and the word kill was very seldom used even by the non-hunters. I pronounce it ky yote, but my dad pronounced it like Redfrog and said ky yute. But I grew up 16 miles from the Canadian border so maybe my dad was influenced by the Canadians.

Biggest pet peeve is the use of the verb "see". It is see, saw, seen. My dad was a teacher and you had better believe I had to use proper grammar. The vast majority of the guys making videos cannot use the various forms of the verb "see" properly. That has nothing to do with what part of the country you are from. It has to do with education.
And I am just an old countrified boy. Okay, I'm done.

just to touch on the non-hunters note, Itend to use the word "harvest" instead of kill or shot, etc. seems to go over "gooder"!lol!

One thing that just curdles my giblets is someone asking if I "caught anything" while I was hunting.

Or referring to a sporting gun as a weapon instead of a firearm.

"caught anything?" I get that all the time here in La La Land. I'm guilty to referring to
sporting arms as weapons. I guess I'll have to think about that one, Grizz.

mine are bessy = 243

thumbup.gif

i'm going to go CALL some ki oats
lol.gif

don't matter if i kill them just that i'm out there trying.
thumbup.gif

going to use "MY 270"
thumbup1.gif

one thing that chaps my back side is "WINDY"
angry.gif

OHHH I HATE WINDY
cursing.gif

it takes the fun right out of trying to call ki oats.
cry.gif

i can hear the wind chimes from here.
whistle.gif

i should have went yesterday
blush.gif

i rarly ever call my rifles weapons or sporting rifles and when i get a deer or elk its take or took coyotes i say kill or killed a fish is caught or trapped animals are caught
i hunt for deer, elk and coyotes but i shoot prairie dogs and jack rabbits.i call for bobcat because i don't get enough in to call it hunting its more "hoping to call"
its all just words to convay a thought so if you know what the intent was whats the big deal.
some folks say "get me a soda" some say "get me a pop" i'll come back from the fridge with a carbonated beverage either way.

The fact that that is a problem is a problem.

Those same people probably don't like the think about the fact that the beef they are eating had to be killed.

If the term "harvest" or "got" is easier for those people to tolerate, then they likely have a pretty low intelligence/sense ratio.

Now, how many of you incorrectly use the term "yearling"?

Most people I hear using the term "yearling" in regards to deer are actually referring to fawns or "young of the year" and not 1.5 year old deer.

The true definition of "yearling" does not apply to fawns.

Quote:Main Entry: year·ling
Pronunciation: \ˈyir-liŋ, ˈyər-lən\
Function: noun
Date: 15th century
: one that is a year old: as a : an animal one year old or in the second year of its age b : a racehorse between January 1 of the year after the year in which it was foaled and the next January 1

— yearling adjective
