Don't think there are too many cottonmouth around the Ky. river, but there are rattlesnakes and a lot of copperheads.

Al,
There aren't supposed to be any cottonmouths in the Bluegrass region, but that sure looks like one to me.

Al, often it is as simple as nobody taking the time to officially document the species in a particular area. Officially in the county where I was a State Park Naturalist/Ranger there were no cottonmouth recorded. I managed four lakes within my park and noted cottonmouths around the lakes. I took video of several of them along with the location signage of the particular lakes along with a witness and sent that to the herp biologist with the conservation department. In the next printing of the official notation of the species that county was listed. It was no surprise to anyone who fished those lakes or to the maintenance crew that worked around there. Just took someone to document the species officially.

GC,
it's a good thing you had a witness to sign off on things. I'm sure the word of a Naturalist/Ranger didn't carry much credibility.

Hey guys, I am a herpetologist, and can identify any species in the world for the most part.

This is a Northern Water Snake of the genus Natrix. They are like wolves, and catch the diseased fish. They are commonly misidentified as a lot of species because their pattern fades. I caught 5 of them yesterday. They don't like being held.

You probably have a chance at a cotton mouth, but only in swamps. Every state below you has them in the eastern US. If I remember tomorrow, I will post a picture of my 7 year old god daughter holding one from today. She is fearless.

Big and thick = female in that species.

I don't know if they needed a witness or not but I am OCD and threw that in for good measure.

. Easy documentation though, most anyone that spent time on or near the lakes had cottonmouth stories.

Hey guys, I saw your post and I'm far from a snake expert but.... I don't think that's a cotton mouth. It looks like a midland water snake. The funny thing about those is they mimic other snakes. They are a look alike. I ran across one last week in a creek that looked just like that and I instantly thought the same thing. I'm here in east Tn and cotton mouths aren't native to this area contrary to everyone's belief. The thing about the midland water snake is that when they feel threatened the puff their heads out in a TRIANGULAR shape to mimic a venomous reptile. Look up info on the midland water snake and that will tell you everything. As far as I know cotton mouths are not known to be the Kentucky.

Hopefully this works. Each state has non venomous water snakes, and the southern states have multiple types of water snakes. The above snake species has a variable brown coloration, always keeping the faint pattern that was dominant when they were a juvenile.

I have close up video of them breeding, if you are interested. haha

Yep, I went back and zoomed Al's picture up closer and I believe y'all are right.
A cottonmouth has a scale pattern that protrudes from the top of its head and covers the eyes when viewed from above.
They are native to KY, but only in the wetlands and sloughs of the extreme western end.

I love my daughter more than anything in this world. I'd take a bullet for her, no questions asked. But she might get peppered with buckshot if she ever does this! All joking aside, if I ever caught her like that with a snake, she wouldn't have enough fat left on her little rear-end to fry her ears with, when I got done whipping her! I don't care if it's a cottonmouth, a nonvenomous water snake, of a fake rubber snake from the toy store!

You boys can bash me if you want, I don't care if they do eat mice and other rodents, and are an important part of the eco-system. The 3 or 4 that I send to snake he!! in small pieces every year, aren't going to have that much of an impact on the environment. Mouse traps are cheaper than shotgun shells and new underwear!

By the way, cute little girl there, but the props in the photo ruin the whole thing!!!

Awww man! Fear is no fun. It's fun having a daughter who is tough as nails. She holds spiders until they die from 98.6 degrees. Handles dogs, could probably learn to shoot... basically a predator master.

She can play with all the dogs, lizards, rats, spiders, all she wants. Bring a lion home if she wants to, I don't care. But ol' dad will draw the line at a snake! No snakes, never, no exceptions!

To each their own brother. I respect what you like to do, but ain't nobody holding snakes up at this house!

The only thing to fear from that snake is getting crapped on.
