Cougar call

Rich, This call is going to take a little practice to get all the sounds down pat, A couple of the sounds are pretty easy to make. I am amazed at how loud this call is, but it takes so little air to blow. I can also make four sounds that I use a lot, cow elk chirp, adult deer distress and snowshoe distress, and bear cub distress. I have other calls that make these sounds, but this call is easier to blow and so effortless. You sent me a sound wave yesterday where you made cougar vocals with your voice, and that sounded good. I have been making some of the sounds with my vocal chords for a year now. Last year, BobMC told me about a book he read where I guy called up togers using nothing but his vocal chords.

Your call was the first one shipped. I have improved the high pitch end a little bit since then. I kept listening to the actual recordings of the 4-6 month old cougar whistle. It is amazing how high pitched that whistle can be. That sound is gonna really tick off some old male cougars. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Rich, I finally had time to work with this call this morning. I have it wired now, the chirp, whistle, warning growl and female in heat. I will e-mail the sounds to you this evening. If you have problems reproducing any pf the sounds, I can explain how I made them.

Rich put me on your list for one of these calls. We don't have a cat season yet but the state legislature is thinking about turning over control of the Cougar population to DFG. If that happens I want to be ready. For the time being I can photograph 'em. Let me know where and when to send the money.

I will probably be in Bergan Mercy hospital when your check gets here, and I will likely be laid up for awhile. I go under the knife on monday morning for bypass surgery. Sorry about the delay in call production. I didn't see this deal coming.

Rich, sorry to hear that you will be going under the knife. All that matters is ones health and their relationships with others. Get the required plumbing problem fixed and then get on the road to a full and speedy recovery. I think we all will be waiting for your first post to let us know that things went well. My address is in my post to breeder (above), and can also be found in the link at bottom of this message. I plan to get a few cougar calls roughed out today and tomorrow, so that when I come home from the hospital I will be able to sit in the house to cut reeds, tune the calls and etc. This should shorten the waiting period for those who send orders after my surgery.
 
Rich, I have learned a few things about the new call today.
Robertjay was over this evening, and when I went to demonstarte the sounds for him, I could not get them to sound right. I got pretty frustrated after a few minutes.
Earlier this evening, I had taken the call apart and washed it and the reed. When I put it back together, I seated the reed all the way forward under the cork retainer. I could not make the sounds that I have been making. When Buddy chewed up my reed the other day, I replaced the reed. I just slid the new reed forward under the band and cork retainer. I did not get it all the way forward. The call will not make the low pitched growl unless the reed is back flush with the tip of the mouthpiece. I could not make the correct sounds on Robert's call until I moved the reed back a bit. Robert is having problems getting the right sound because he is blowing way too much air through the call.
You do not blow on this call to get the proper sound. You restrict the air flow between your tongue and the roof of your mouth and force the air through the call much like using a diaphram call. It takes very little air. Your cupped hand muffles the end of the call. You manipulate the sound by the velocity of air pushed through the call and by opening and closing your hand slightly. There is a basic low pithed growl sound that you have to be able to hit the first time every time. Then the rest is a piece of cake from there. What I learned tonight has allowed me to tune the call and really improve the sound quality.

It is true that sliding the reed rearward will give a lower pitched sound when blowing deep on the reed, but it should not be a necessary evil. E mail a .wav recording of that deep growl you are talking about, so that I can tune the calls to reproduce that sound easily. Once I hear the sound you have in mind, it will be a piece of cake from that point on. For other folks reading this, it is important that you listen to the instruction cassette that comes with the call. It is there that you learn how to duplicate the sounds. Everyone blows a bit differently on a call of course, but the tape will give you a place to start. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
 
Rich, Thanks to my dog, I had to change reeds five minutes after I had taken the call out of the box. So, all the sounds that you have already heard were made with the reed rearward. On both calls, I had to reposition the reed to make the growl.
