COUGAR IN WESTERN NEW YORK?????

All my adult life I have heard that a cougar sounded like either a woman screaming or a baby crying. I don't know. I have not heard that.

I saw a coug running when I was 8 years old. I got my mother to look and confirm it as well (did not want to let a golden opportunity to get back up on that one!!!!) but it ran, no time to sit around and make noise.

A friend has a WT and a acquaintance also has one as well. From the sounds I have heard, I have not heard babies or women for that matter. Of course I would bet that the WT is not the last word for coug sounds. I bet they got lots more in their "bag of sounds".

jion the fun on the search for the eastern cougar on all the huntingpa.com forums. i get a laugh every time there is a new post. there is one of the nicest pictures of a summer bobcat i have ever seen on there and a bunch of the guys swear it is a cougar! great fun , but a little scary to think we share the same woods. i would feel safer if there was a lion behind every tree. lol
 
Do a search for Florida panthers. There is a site with cougar sounds. One of which is a scream. Rich Cronk has good sounds to learn to use his hand call with. Study up so you know what you are hearing. Check out Bobcat sounds at Western Rivers calls too.
 
Some stats on ougars I read a few years back:

Successful stalk and kills
Cougars = 8 out of 10.
African Lions - 3 out of 10

Fact is the cougar is an efficient predator. I would be thrilled and feel priveliged to see one in the wild. I'm a NYC boy who spends alot of time in the Northern catskills. My property is in the area where Delaware,Schoharie and Greene counties come together and there have been sightings up here for the last 20 years. Makes me nervous about my kids, dogs, etc.

I do not doubt LionHo's claim that CA has a "gazillion" of them running around. Just curious that he failed to mention that the number of cougar/human attacks has increased since the hunting of cougars in that state was outlawed. The facts are out there gang.....LionHo may be correct, only a handful of recorded attacks on human prior to 1990......more than 20 since then !!!! Why the change ?

Myself, I tend to doubt that sport hunting alone ever put too much of a crimp in ML populations here. Unknown to most folks is that large numbers of lions are taken each year on depredation permits, and their numbers are certainly not declining as the result. Rebounding ML numbers might be better explained by the high deer numbers (which have little or no hunting pressure in many regions of the state).

BTW, whatever stats you read on ML efficiency versus African lions certainly do not relate to their status as man-eaters. Intractions of adult ML with people tend to be wholly incidental to their primary focus, which is deer. Male juvies dispersing into unoccupied lion niches and mothers teaching youngsters how to hunt get into almost all the lion trouble that is reported, even today. Fatal attacks on humans, despite the headlines that they garner, remain exceedingly rare events (as opposed to extraordinarily rare events, as in the early to late 20th century).

This claimed fear that cougars supposedly have of humans is FALSE!

This FALSE CLAIM is the basis for hoodwinking the majority of people.

The fear of humans was taught by our ancestors to cougars. Pursuit with hounds emulates the role wolf packs of yesteryear served to keep cougars in check. PUMA is about to write a new and never before witnessed chapter in it's history.

Cougars are EFFICIENT KILLERS ....... you better believe it. And look deeper into those African Lion numbers compared to cougars. Cougars ALWAYS hunt solo. African Lions hunt in PRIDES!!!!!

Another popular myth about cougars is that they only kill what they need. BLOOD SPORT is not unique to humans. Cats kill for fun and food. This kill .... move on, kill again ..... move on kept them one step ahead of wolf packs eager to take the cats kill and even the cat if possible.
