Coyote Hunting and Bug Dope

What should I be using for bug dope when calling/stalking coyotes? I live in Maine and they are usually right on top of you before we see them. I also have to say, sometimes you cant see due to the cloud of black flies screwing up the hunt! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

The place where I hunt, I cant always have the wind in my favor. so thats why I m hoping to find out about something with has little to no oder.

If the wind is not right having or not having repellant is not going to make a difference they will smell you and they will leave the country, some faster than others. Some will choose to ignore the your odor, but most will not. Play the wind the best you can. You win some you lose some. You will have fun either way.
Welcome to PM by the way.

Oh, I know what your saying. Thank you too. Also I m kinda, ok really green in coyote hunting but am working on it. Sucking up all the knowledge I can. In the army some of us are/were known as "[beeep]'s" Dedicated Individual to Collective Knowledge. So I m doing all the reading and talking I can. Looks like here I m goinna get the ThermaCell.

Guess nailed it pretty well. Coyotes got great noses and fooling those noses really doesn't work well. Mechanical options such as wind direction seems to be the best option. If bugs are a problem then use a bug repellent.

I still suggest 100% deet. It works on all the bugs you are likely to encounter including ticks. It doesn't have a strong smell and I doubt if many animals will attribute the odor that it does have to people.

If it's not handy to use my thermacell I use unscented repellent with Picaradin, it doesn't make my skin feel like it's on fire like Deet.
However no repellent is totally unscented.
good luck.

They make odorless tick and bug spray, thats what I use. I get the kind you only spray on clothes and last for 2 weeks. I then get the spray for skin and spray neck, and hat and it is odorless also. The ticks and chiggers are bad this time of year in ky.

I hear that, although I haven't seen many ticks here in Maine this year. But the [beeep] black flies are horrid.

Now how long do you think for my sent to dissipate in a low wind? Because maybe about that time would be good to start calling. (in the Maine woods there hardly is heavy wind unless a storm a brewing.)

Thermacell is amazing. Here in Wisconsin spring turkey season can be brutal. You get out to your stand, turn on your Thermacell and within 15 minutes all the bugs are gone and you hunt comfortably. This truly works a ton better than any bug spray.

I went hog hunting this evening where the gnats and mosquitos are horrendous! Tried my Thermacell for the first time and it worked great! It took a couple minutes after turning it on, but then there were just no bugs!!!
When you use spray repellent, the bugs still try to get at you, but just don't land. With the Thermacell they just go away! Only problem is, there were no hogs either /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Hogs are like coyotes, for the most part once they hit your sent trail they are gone whether or not you are using your Thermacell. I've killed a good many hogs using mine.
I usually let mine heat up on the way to the stand, takes less time keeping the bugs away.
