Coyote hunting in Idaho?

I just moved to Idaho from Alaska, I have always been a big hunter. The terrain is vastly different from Alaska its mind boggling. I just picked up my new rig, Remington M77 VL SS .22-250, with a SS10X42 scope and wow/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif is all I can say.

Anyways back on track to my question. I moved to Boise and I am looking for some decent hunting grounds for yotes or anything else, I did find a few places for badgers and quite productive, but I don't want to over hunt the area. Any suggestions? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

You are in a good area. I'd suggest spending the next few months locating the coyotes (look for sign and do some howling at night) and checking out areas then hit it hard when it gets a little colder. And make sure to post pictures of all the coyotes you'll be killing! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Head east towards Mountain Home, Turn south on hwy. 51 hunt althe way south to the Border or to that Indian Reservation.
There are roads that turn off all over.
You can also take Hwy 78 back towards Boise, there are lots of turn offs and area.

Also between Mountain Home and Boise there are turn offs towards the North and North East. There is some great area there.
good luck
Carl

Thanks a lot for the Bruneau recommendation, I have been thinking about heading out towards Mountain home, but being unfamiliar with the area i didnt want to get into an area where i was unwelcome.

Bofire is there any private ranches out there that i should notify first? or is it all BLM land?

Cant say as far as the area goes, but im betting you will find that 10x scope way to much for moving coyotes. Especially the ones that come streaking bye.

gee carl give up the good spot's kidding. all good hunting south of Boise. will be crowded slydog's member's from his site have a hunting contest every month.Rick

Used to be some pretty good rock chuck hunting North of Weiser, but I haven't hunted that area for a few years. I live up North of you a ways between Orofino and Lewiston. Lots of coyotes up here.

If your going to be calling a variable scope with two or three power on the bottom end and a wide field of view will serve you well. you'll often get a sneaker that gets up close.

on my three calling gun's 204, 25/06 and 300 mag. i have encore ProHunter's.i use 3x9x50 either nikon or Leopold those work great for me. last time i hunted Boise two year's ago. Rick

I kinda feel the same way about someone drawing a map to our hunting grounds, but it's all good. I'll be trapping that area hard this year and calling it. I doubt there'll be hundreds of coyotes when January comes around, but I might be mistaken. It's all public land though, so everybody come on out.

i should of never said the one area. and carl should of pm the area not tell every one. i wont be there for a long time. i dont have nothing to do with Slydog any more. Rick

I totally disagree, I'll tell most anyone where I hunt, this state or any. the idea of public ground being some sort of personal hunting area is crap.
I'll share all my spots with anyone. If they get there first or hunt it better more power to them. If it is private they have to get permission just like I did. If they cant find the areas maybe they aren't too good at hunting.
I went to this area with a 'friend' we found the areas and so can anyone else.
As far as "messing with my truck" I treat all criminal cowards the same.
I dont think "mason jar' actually meant what he said, I think it was a joke.
Anybody wants to hunt with me, I'll show where and what I do, I hope you will do the same with me.
We are all hunters together.

My comment about letting the air out of tires was a joke unless there are Washington plates on it....then who knows? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif That area is a good spot for hunting, but it's been "discovered" by more and more people. The fires last year wiped out a very large area and that has concentrated more people into the spots that still have sage. With this post, I'm sure half of Boise (the other half that already wasn't hunting it) will come over for a go at it. Not too many years ago we could hunt it and be the only ones out there all day. Now there's a rig on every road it seems. I guess that's called progress. Luckily I'm retiring in August so I'll be able to hunt it during the week days when most people are working. I do sort of feel like it belongs to me since I live close to it, but it is indeed public land. To each his own, but I personally rarely share great hunting spots with anyone. Even those sworn to secrecy will tell their friends and before long, the area is overrun with hunters.....as this one will soon be I'm sure.

Gosh, maybe you should put up signs letting folks know that they are hunting on YOUR public land then you would not have to be so buttsore about it all the time.

Wow, don't you think this was a bit harsh? Are you going to sit there and act like it doesn't bother you, even just a little, to show up to your favorite spot only to find someone else there? I have always been very understanding about public land, and I've always been very respectful to anyone else using it, but that doesn't keep me from feeling a little "irked" that there is someone else in the spot I want to be in, "my spot" (especially if they have Ada county plates /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif). That's all I read out of Mason's posts. You don't think that he would really go so far as to vandalize someone's rig do you? I am pretty sure, although I don't know the guy, that he was just joking.

A little harsh? No I don't think so. This is not the first time I have heard this sentiment about public land. Just for clarification I will say that I am not from Ada county but always get a kick out of folks from Mt. Home not caring for the area since there are more than a handful of folks that sure don't seem to mind driving to Boise for their job. The bottom line is that there is no such thing as "my spot" on public land for you, Mason Jarr or myself. Those spots were known about by people long dead and will be known about by people not born yet. Being irked about somebody being in a location that you planed on going is only a waste of your time and hard on your blood preasure. Hard to be mad at somebody for having a little more foresight and getting their first. Also, everybody has a right to go out and find any spot that there is available. You have to take the good with the bad when dealing with public ground.

Hmm I believe my thread has been hijacked... But to Bofire, thanks for the location i went out there on friday just to have a look around. I saw 3 rattlesnakes, a ton of rabbits, but no coyotes, albeit I wasnt calling or hunting, just checking the area out.

As far as not wanting your fav spot given out to everyone I totally and 100% understand that. But we are all out there to have fun, my son and I have been drifting apart during the last year or so([beeep] teenagers) So I figured some good ol' quality time hunting together would be great. So, as I said I understand the fact that people dont like giving out their spots but remember hunting isn't always about pulling the trigger.
