Coyote Scarecrow

Hey Guys,

Last Saturday I tried skinning a coyote for the first time. I wouldn't say I did a real great job, but I did okay. The dog had sat for a few hours before I got to it. I had a hard time with the tail, and I finally just cut the bone about half way down (I don't have a tail stripper). I also should have started the rear legs before I hung him from the fence post. Once I got going I did okay. I found a few spots where things get thin and it is easy to cut through the hide (I found this the hard way). When I got to the ears, I had heard people talk about turning them inside out, but I couldn't figure out how so I cut them off with the cartilage inside. This whole deal took me way too long at about an hour. I was going slow and trying to learn as much as I could though. I definitely need a dedicated skinning knife. Looking at the Havalon Piranta, but it will have to wait till after xmas. Anyways, the hide was a good one, but I didn't think my skinning job was worth saving so I made a coyote scarecrow in the barnyard. Here is a couple of pictures I took the following Wednesday while hunting with Farva250. The hide was pretty ripe, but he couldn't keep his hands off it UUGGGHH!!

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies. The guy in the photos (Farva250 on the forums) has a DVD he is gonna bring to work tonight for me to watch. I am not sure which one it is. I want to get several of them but the truth of it is that I can't buy anything hunting related till after the first of the year. Maybe Santa will bring me something, but he has 3 kids he has to "buy" the magic for.

Lowholer1: Thanks for kind words. I live in Kettle Falls, but those photos were taken at my Father-in-Laws farm above Gifford. If you go up the hill you can see the Columbia River.

Smokingun: I am hoping to learn to skin them in several ways(or does that only apply to cats/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif). I figured I would start with the obvious and get used to handling them and then get more difficult later.

Thanks for the replies, keep them comming

Looks like you did pretty good to me. The tail you can do with 2 dowels about 3/8" or a couple tree branches and just put the tail between your third and fourth finger and grip the 2 dowels with your hand and squeaze them together hard as you pull down the tail. When the skin starts to give, it will just pull off real quick. Looks to me like you should have saved that hide. A few nicks will not hurt anything. Hope you get a bunch more.

Ditto on the Blaine Eddy DVD...by far the most instructive video from start to finish on skinning a coyote.

Another good way...practice, practice, practice!

Good luck

Maybe this will help you out. There are some other videos on there if you type in coyote skinning.

I'm surprised that guy hasn't sliced himself. I've never skinned anything, but I know you never cut toward your hand while pushing a blade.

You need to strengthen you hands. I just skin it down about 5" from the butt and put it between my index finger and center finger and pull the bone out. Then split the tail to the tip. Though I have skinned thousands of coyotes, I use to be a furbuyer and run a route thru OK, TX, NM,& KS picking up 400+ coyotes a week on average. This was when the prices were high in the late 70's and early 80's.

Hey Weaz, I have property just up the lake from there. Actually above Rice. We have lots of dogs out there, I just have not connected yet!
