Coyotes got 2 chickens this morning, and...

Momma's PISSED!

A pair of coyotes came up the house this morning about 7:30 and helped themselves to breakfast while I was getting ready for work. The wife came in the bathroom yelling at me to my gun! But before I could get to the safe, the devils escaped without a shot.

So momma decides she wants a "ready to go" rifle available. (This ain't the first time the coyotes have raided the hen house.) And sometimes she's at home by herself and wants something that she feels comfortable shooting.

All of my hunting rifles are AR platforms, and they're a little too complex for her likings. So I'll be searching for a good bolt action. Something in .233, and preferable with a 1:8 or 1:9 twist. I shoot Hornady 53 and 55 gr. V-Max ammo through my AR's, so I would like to find something that likes the same pills.

While budget is not a primary concern, there's no need to break the bank on a rifle that will spend most of its life setting in the corner.

Any suggestions?

Ruger American? Don't own one but have buddies that do. Should be a handy little rifle for her to handle and seem everyone I know that has one says they are accurate

Tikka T3 Lite in .223. I have one with fluted bbl, 1:8 twist (I think). Loves 55 gr v-max, not bad with anything from 50-60 grs. Lightweight, good trigger, and very accurate. Got mine at Sportsman's Warehouse.

I have had excellent experience with the Tikka T3's being very accurate right out of the box. To mimic what Reaper4 said, I have heard nothing but good things about the Ruger American/Ranch being an excellent value for the money and being quite accurate for a big box store gun. I don't think that you could go wrong either way.

AR too complicated? Pick up rifle, flip safety off, look through illuminated dot scope/sight, find coyote with dot and squeeze trigger - done. If there is a miss, continue to track coyote with dot and crush trigger repeatedly until coyote dies/runs out of sight or run out of ammo 20 or 30 rounds later. Low recoil, accurate, reliable, high capacity, long effective range, simple operation... what's not to like? If you live off the beaten path and she is home alone coyotes raiding the hen house might be the least troublesome critter to worry about. Learning the AR wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for the little lady.

My thoughts too. Maybe a 870 in a 20 gauge youth model or even a H&R single shot.

Not a bad option - if the hen house is close enough to the house.

ARs are not complicated as long as you can keep one in the pipe, add kids or maybe a uncomfortable wife and a loaded AR is not a option sitting in the corner. I would say a bolt gun with a clip siting on top of the fridge would be ready to go enough if you got kids. Just a thought. But if no kids are involved and she is comfortable with a AR in the corner with one in the pipe, then there isn't much easier then flipping the safety off aiming and pulling the trigger. Sense you already got the ARs. But this could be a good excuse to get a new rifle sense the wife is all for it...

Sorry one more post

Rifles:
That 1-8 twist tikka would be a nice one.
Then I would add maybe a Rem 700 LTR 1-9 twist 20inch pipe
Or maybe the Rem 700 AAC 16.5 inch pipe and 1-9 twist I believe.

They all would be easy to shoulder and in a twist you want.

Savage, Mossberg or the Ruger are all good to go and shoot well. For the money one of those is what I would choose. All come in .223 with 9 twist barrels. A red dot or a low power scope like the one Bushnell makes in 1X4X32 with a 30mm tube. Dead Yotes.

Tikka compact would be my choice. I believe it is 1/10 twist which is fine. I shoot up to 55 gr with 1/12 twist and 1/14 twist.

20-100 yards.

Thanks for the many thoughts, suggestions, and ideas. I definitely have some options to think about now.
